Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

Unpopular opinion this thread: Our 5-1 this season is far more impressive than our 11-4 was.

Anybody that knows anything about football could see the massive flaws and issues in our 11-4 win/loss. This year, based on our performances and players I'm actually starting to believe.
Marginally better.

We were 4-2 and lost to the usual suspects Essendon at Docklands and Geelong anywhere (AO) and the 4 wins were against bottom teams. We were 6-4 then won 5 in in a row, a few were unconvincing. Beating GWS after we had choked against Brisbane makes it a better start than 2018.

No, it's the brand of footy we are playing compared to a couple of years ago, that was unsustainable slop based on negative tactics and dragging the game down to a pathetic level. That was never going to work against compitent teams.

We are playing a much better fluent game this year. Simple proper footy.

It's almost as if you weren't alive during the days post 11-4.
In 2018, Port was 3-0, and this board was up in arms. We were 11-4, and this board was in "there is something wrong with us" mode.

I trust this board. I don't trust Port.

Even in the two years universally considered a success, the team lurched from 5-0 to 5-5 (2013) and 10-2 to 14-8 (2014).

I get the desperation for positivity and faith — and the potential ceiling of this group is obvious (as it has been since Boak, Gray, Westhoff and Ebert came online as established pros) — but unless your memory is like a VHS tape which can be recorded over with each passing month, who we are is still who we are until considerable evidence to the contrary.

Flag or bust. Anything less is a sack hinkley

It really is. Boak is an injury away from decline, Gray, Westhoff, Ebert, Rockliff, Motlop are all in decline and will be worse next year. This is the year to win it.

We'll still have s good young list next year, but won't have the experience to jag a flag.

My fear is we will make the finals this year, but bow out in the prelim (to me this isn't good enough), Hinkley will get an extension over the Summer.

Even if Hinkley wins the flag I don't want him re signed. He's been there too long for average results, we need a fresh set of ideas to carry us through the next phase with an exciting young list.

Time to cut your losses:

Individuals commit the sunk cost fallacy when they continue a behavior or endeavor as a result of previously invested resources (time, money or effort) (Arkes & Blumer, 1985). This fallacy, which is related to loss aversion and status quo bias, can also be viewed as bias resulting from an ongoing commitment.

For example, individuals sometimes order too much food and then over-eat just to “get their money’s worth”. Similarly, a person may have a $20 ticket to a concert and then drive for hours through a blizzard, just because she feels that she has to attend due to having made the initial investment. If the costs outweigh the benefits, the extra costs incurred (inconvenience, time or even money) are held in a different mental account than the one associated with the ticket transaction (Thaler, 1999).

Research suggests that rats, mice and humans are all sensitive to sunk costs after they have made the decision to pursue a reward (Sweis et al., 2018).

But what would Travis know, he is only a player, he is not on BF LOL

I think everyone is in agreeance that Ken had a huge influence over the first couple seasons at Port with some very good football. He also had a huge influence in underachieving post 2014. As Boak also knows- Ken was the one who played him as a fwd for 2 seasons!

Yep, Travis liking Hinkley is irrefutable proof that Hinkley is a great coach. The past five failed seasons didn't actually happen because Travis sees Hinkley as part of the family.

At least Travis gives his all and does what ever he can to be the best he can be. It's a real shame that Hinkley has returned Travis's love by pissing his career down the toilet.

Exactly, and to add, I think there is potential premiership success in both Schofield and Monty, and if we let them slip away to our rivals while committing to another fifty years of coke zero '10th and loving it' we will really regret it. IMO there are shades of Clarko 04 in Schofield and I'd rather we don't let him walk to Hawthorn for free this time round.

Agree totally. The club should sack Hinkley as you've suggested.

I have know idea what the hell you are on about but anyone can go online and quote somebody's writings.

Oh and sack Hinkley.

Just typical Hinkley, he will go when he has extracted everything possible from the club. 11 or so players nearing the end, leaving the incoming coach with years of rebuilding a squad worthy of finals success, something Ken could not achieve with the abundance of talent he has had and the backing of the club, also triple the time of other AFL coaches. Wasted years.

Sack Ken.

Oh and sack Hinkley.
The sad thing is that Thunderpants doesn't understand that Hinkley is only still coaching at Ports because of the sunk cost fallacy and the related plan continuation bias.

Oh and sack Hinkley.

I think he's saying that Port shouldn't feel committed to the sunk cost of the years and games already given to Ken, and that the club should still sack him now. Seems to match up with the other recent posts where he seemed to be comparing Ken to Goodwin?

I don't think it has much application here though. I agree the decision to sack or retain Ken should be entirely determined on the situation we are in now rather than the past, but I think you can still learn lessons from the past and look at recent results.
