Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

There goes a massive chance to change some perceptions.

I started to believe that this year might be different, which was obviously a mistake. No guts at selection, just a couple of random changes.

Sack Hinkley.
Putting aside the mental weakness and game day lack of nous it at least appeared until the Sutcliffe selection it looked like some (certainly not all) required lessons had been learnt. We weren't too short up forward, we'd seen Rocky + Wines wasn't working, as too slow in the centre and dropped one. Then in comes Sutcliffe. Then a tall forward is not replaced. Then Rocky + Wines. Ken just couldn't resist going back to being Ken for a whole season.

Yah, for lasting until round 9 selections before completely screwing the pooch instead of the usual round 3 or 4 I suppose.

33 year old Westhoff, already in droppable form and running on fumes, playing his third game in 11 days.

What could go wrong?

I was trying to pinpoint when that moment came for me, and I just descended into fulltime HiNkLeY hAtEr ‘this will never change, we are doomed, wake me up when it’s over’ mode.

And I did.

Round 3, 2018.

The offseason captures of Rockliff, Watts, Motlop joining what was still a talented and diverse group with plenty of juice left in it, coming off 2 very solid wins against Freo at home and Sydney away.

And then we’re all biting our nails in the dying seconds, relying on a Polec goalline save to prevent an upset loss to what was still a bottom-4 Brisbane team at that point.

That’s it. Kaput. Spud.

Cue a diabolical display against the Bombers at Marvel and the trademark grand Adelaide Oval bendover for Geelong in the ensuing fortnight and 11-4 was always going to be a Hindenburgian mirage.

You held out longer than me. It was Round 4 last year against Richmond's VFL team with Grimes and Stack taking a billionty intercept marks each that pushed me past the point of no return.

Honourable mention to the game against GWS where we dropped Dixon and lost by a point with Davis and Haynes taking a trillionty intercept marks each. I walked out with ten minutes to go even though we were only about 8 points down because I knew, and I mean knew, that we were going to lose. If I hadn't broken before that night, I would've broken after.

It was a grey Sunday afternoon. 6th of August, 2017 where the heavens opened and so did our behinds to cop a record 84 point reaming against 'The Pride'.

fin.

Personally those aren't the sort of games that turn me off coaches. I don't hold coaches responsible for games where the entire team shits the bed. I hold them responsible for games where the team is clearly giving it their all, winning contests and playing well around the ground, but still losing the tactical battle. Richmond and GWS last year were perfect examples of that.

Selections before "that" North game, then the game itself..... My final meltdown.

The game that broke me was the one against Freo in Perth in 2018 when we were playing to lock in a top 2 spot on the ladder, they hadn't won a game for about three months, all over them in the first quarter, their fans were giving them shit for not being able to kick a goal: Robbie Gray gets knocked out and that's enough for us - too hard to win from here.

I agree, however this was the 5th Showdown loss in a row going into the game in 5th spot on the ladder where a win would have sewn up a top 4 spot. Everything to play for but we dish up turgid bathwater. That's on the coaches much like against NM last year where LarkRown kicked 15 between them

pretty sure mine was boak's 250th last season away at collingwood where it was like 0 goals to 7 in the opening quarter. that game had a shocking free paid against hoff early on that i've been meaning to track down footage of to remember if it was as awful as i think. that moment actually broke me. also that collingwood day game at the G 2/3 years ago, where polec scored that awesome individual goal where he went past like 8-10 people. that game left me extremely hollow.

What got me was the excuses afterwards. We were careening towards the trademark self-inflicted disaster well before Ryder and Gray went down, against a team that was barely AFL-standard.

I have always been a believer in the coach is only as good as his players.

This is more obvious in league like the EPL where there is a massive divide but I think it applies to AFL.

Look how great Clarkson looks now he has a weaker list.

I have never felt we have had a Premiership List the whole time Ken Hinkley has been at the club.

I don't even think we are a top 4 team as I feel Collingwood, West Coast, Richmond and Brisbane are ahead of us.

So unlike so many on this board, I am not going to waste any energy getting all worked up about every little thing Ken Hinkley does or doesn't do.

In fact I hate this Thread.

If only the head coach had a say in drafting, developing, selecting, instructing and motivating the players.

Might need to change your name... ;) "somebody has to lose maybe" might be available...

Agreed. When would you ever see a club like, I don’t know, Leicester, bob up and beat the traditional powerhouses with a fraction of the wage and transfer budget?

I agree. It is all about the players.

Anyone with basic people management skills could make finals with a reasonable list such as we've got which is why we should sack the highly paid Hinkley and get someone a lot cheaper.

Wouldn't make an iota of difference to our ladder position. In fact we'd probably still finish one position lower than iota.

Unprecedented football department spend.
World-class high performance staffing.
A "top four" (from our CEO) playing list has been turned over.
Assistant coaching panel has been turned over and tweaked.

But let's not nitpick the one constant over the past 8 years.

The McGovern game did it for me. We literally performed a parody of ourselves that night. That's not the mark of a serious football club. Any hope that we might be able to turn things around died with that McGovern floater.

I watch a fair bit of other football teams. You see the odd shocking performance, but I think in terms of breaking supporters hearts we must be right up there. Melbourne maybe, but they're broken and have been for well over a decade. A good parallel is essendon. Sure we didn't try and drug cheat then go all denialist, but other than that our trajectory has been pretty similar

Edit: Essendon in recent years has probably played more exciting footy than us.

Our list is also miles better than theirs.
