We know he won't win the flag next year. We all know it. So a smart club would think to itself, should we cut our losses now, pay the 6 months out and start afresh and rejuvenate the club..... or should we just wait for the inevitable, have a mediocre year, suck the life out of the playing group and the supporters and then act? We know the answer don't we? We clearly aren't a smart club.

That's exactly right.

Perhaps just perhaps the players need a fresh face?

But Kochie has tied his caboose to this train and he has to give it another shot.

The writing is on the wall - most can now see it (except Rucci)

Flags Shmags

David Koch is happy just to have 11 -13 chances per year to roll out "the best game day experience in the league".

FruChocs!!!!

Every ****ing thing the club does game day was triggering my brother and I on Saturday night. The ****ing KFC drums, Fruchocs, even Timmy G with Scott Hodges.

Nothing highlights how shit it all is more than being 10 goals down and blowing a GF appearance.

Just shut the **** up you campaigners.

The guy said “judge us in the finals” after criticism earlier in the year. What’s the excuse for that disgraceful effort or lack thereof?

There is no possible excuse for it and he needs to be held accountable.

Enough is enough
This was always just a way to evade criticism by pointing to a different time. Its a spin tactic that's been used for a while.

Poor H&A games against top sides: "Judge us in finals"
Finals failure: "It was just an aberration, judge us on our 60% record in H&A"

It was exactly the same as during the no-captains disaster.

When announcing no-captains: "We need to do this because its going to bring success"
After no success: "It's been successful because of..." *waves hand aimlessly*

He's not laughing. They're all hurting. They're also looking after each other. Have you ever been involved at a footy club? Genuine question.
What's this looking after each other crap? Is it a creche or a football club? Are we not in the business of winning premierships?

It almost feels like they're going out of their way to try and piss off and alienate 1/3 or so of the supporter base.

"So ya can't stand the 'I Don't Care/ I Love It' song? Well we're gonna turn it up to ELEVEN!!!! And then we'll get a chunky bloke in a Port dreadlock wig to play a drum to it!!!!"

I’m flattered you would seek my opinion, and I’m happy to give it.

You ask if I think Ken generally dislikes South Australia and does not buy in to the PAFC 151 Years, only pretends to.

Short answer is: I agree with this. He neither likes the state nor the Club. He likes his bank account of course and the AFL/PAFC lucre that flows into it because of the job he is finding more and more impossible to carry out.

But why? It wasn’t like that in 2013-2014.

There is too much for me to add to this post to do justice to your, I assume, desire for a full and rounded opinion … including conversations I’ve had, hearsay from respectable sources, first-hand observations, first-hand judgements ….

So I’m thinking of creating a separate, specific thread, with the OP aimed at properly answering the question: Why?

At present the working title is: ‘When Kochie Met Kenny - Analysis of a Toxic Chemical Reaction.’
Thanks LHR now that is something I’d enjoy reading !

A ruthless club would bring out the big broom at this point. Hinkley, Voss and any player over the age of Ollie Wines should be gone. Thanks for your service but you all had your shot and ultimately didn’t make it. We need new energy and fresh ideas to make the most of the talent in the next group. It’s time to pass the baton.
The creed has been tarnished by this pathetic showing, the whole club may have well used it for toilet paper.

Absolutely disgusting and embarrassing.

Kochie thought Saturday was a aberration and wanted to look at the data and stats ill give you two stats about Ken and why he isn't the right man for the job anymore and show you why Saturday wasn't anything strange or not to be expected.

This stat includes teams that were in the top 4 during the season or finished inside the top 4 at the conclusion of the home and away season and we versed them in the finals.
Since hiring Ken in 2013 we've come up against 62 top 4 teams, we've lost 47 of these encounters and won a measly 15, 24%. You know the saying to be the best you have to beat the best, Ken clearly doesn't.

The Jump the Dogs got on us in the first quarter shouldn't have been a surprise either considering we've let them get out to 21 point and 16 point margins earlier this year. But its not just the Dogs getting the jump on us its basically everyone Ken cant even get the players up and going from the first bounce anymore.
Finals included
2018 22 games 11 first quarters lost 1 drawn 47% of first quarters won
2019 22 games 13 first quarters lost 1 drawn 40 % of first quarters won
2020 20 games 7 first quarters lost 0 drawn 65 % of first quarters won ( shorter quarters)
2021 24 games 14 first quarters lost 0 drawn 42 % of first quarters won

If you still think Kens the right man for the job the club is doomed.
So 24% against top 4 teams actually isn't that bad. I've posted stats on team records against top 4 sides in the last 5 years, and that shows the top 4 teams all run at about 30%. Our 24% is inflated by the earlier years, in particular our ability to consistently beat the Hawks when they were entrenched in the top 4 in 2013-2015.

However our record in the last 5 years is 3 wins from 22 matches. That gives us the 15th best win % against top 4, which is clearly deplorable.

Why would we do any forward planning? Koch and Hinkley are tied together and will be more than happy to create a mess when they leave (lets see how you go without us).
At the moment it seems like they are intent to stay til they have squeezed any last ounce out of our older players so that when they go and we inevitably have a down patch they can all say "see" and not be embarrassed by someone actually coaching the great list we have.

I've emailed Richo, i'd encourage everyone else to do the same. Even if it's just to counter the backslapping emails he'll get from the facebook crowd.
If someone has a good email outlining the facts in a non emotive way id love to plagiarise it.

I dont have it in me do delve too deep myself right now.

I sent this. I didn't go hard at the stats with him or go overly emotive, I just pointed out that we lost big games too often to be a genuine threat.

Hi Matthew,

I'm sure you're very busy at this time of year and I just wanted to make a quick point about the coaching setup from a platinum members perspective, a perspective shared by many of those who sit around me at the footy.

A few years ago, Ken was an absolute disaster of a coach. He had a terrible gameplan, bizarre selection policy and couldn't get the players consistently motivated. He really should have lost his job at the end of 2017.

However to his credit, he's sorted out a lot of his issues. The gameplan is now pretty good and the selection policy is sensible. The results we've had over the last couple of years prove this. The issue that remains is Ken's ability to get the players motivated consistently.

The prelim final performance wasn't abberation. 3-4 times a year, every year, we have a game where we flat out just don't mentally come out of the changerooms. The next most recent one for us was the Showdown, but there are clear examples 3-4 times every single season since 2013 that I don't really need to point out, they're obvious. They usually come against good opposition, but not always. That's the one thing that Ken hasn't been able to iron out during his improvement as a coach, and it's something that i'm not sure he can iron out with his coaching style.

He might not be a bad coach, but the message simply isn't getting through to the players. It's just not. They haven't been consistently motivated for his entire tenure, and our ability to win the 3 big finals in a row you need to win against top 4 opposition to win a flag simply isn't there when we're putting up these awful under-prepared performances against good sides.

Ken has taken us as far as he can. There is no shame in that. Sometimes things just don't quite work out. Staying any longer, he is only going to hurt the club and hurt his own reputation. Now is the perfect time for a clean break for both parties, where he can probably get another head coach job at AFL level and we can move on to a fresh voice for the players to fix these mental hiccups that have been the mark of his coaching tenure with us.

Good luck. I know you're hurting as badly as I am and I know you want it to get better as much as I do. Please make the tough call and don't waste another year on a coach who can't take us to a Premiership.

Kind regards,

**** the GF, I got me some Froo Chocs

Email sent. Glad I waited a few days. I’d have been like Randy getting thrown out of his son’s baseball games if I’d written one with actual steam coming out of my ears.
Can you share the general gist, and let us know if you get anything other than a template reply?
