Winning a premiership would indeed increase, as you say, memberships, sponsorships and merchandising. In the meantime, the Club has to, at a minimum, retain its current base of sponsors and partners. Imagine how much worse our situation would instantly become if MG, disenamoured with their association to the unattractive image projected by our senior coach and the on-field performance he has overseen this year, should up stakes. And/or if Gupta did likewise. We would truly be back overnight to the swamp as a pre-Koch unloved non-destination brand. We're only going to get control if the club pays off it's debts (as AFL backed) and have a strong financial base that can weather down years. Then we remove the AFL excuse for control. The AFL would rather keep control, as it is still the VFL. We only got backing and help to get to AO, as we were becoming a drain on them. Port as mid-table, dependable crowds, some finals, but never a real threat, is perfect in their eyes.
We only have three paths to where we can really pressure to get back our club and bypass their control without them rolling out all the excuses:
1. We win a Premiership, with the subsequent increase (both in number and what the club can charge) in Memberships, Sponsorships and merchandising giving us enough to clear real debt, without Koch's bullshit fudging.
2. We have a rich benefactor bail the club out.
3. We get a much better stadium deal.
If a rich benefactor was going to save us, they would have by now. There's more chance Putin resigning as Russian President and begging forgiveness on his knees at the UN then the SMA(SANFL) giving us a fair stadium deal, unless a gun is pointed at their head.
That leaves a flag. Which is why 2020 burns so much as a wasted chance.
We did have option 4. China, but COVID and Ken stinking it up the years we were playing there put paid to that as our 'get out of jail free' card.
tl;dr; We're f’ed.
Relevant to this warning is the fact that our GM Commercial, James Lindsay, has left the Club. His name fell off the staff list a few weeks ago, and nought has been said about it. James was involved in the teamwork that landed MG pre-season 2020, and had developed strong connections with GFG.
China, your 4. option above, had everything to do with the MG coup and a lot to do with Gupta’s interest in the Club. It hasn’t been just covid that took away our ‘get out of jail’ card with China, populist geopolitics had already done damage before the pandemic began. It’s a tough world out there, the real world.
