Depends on the outcome of the season, but given the most likely circumstance at the moment, I think they announce a succession plan at the end of the season and he stays on as coach/mentor for Carr.
So he can white ant and be a disruptive influence?

As much as it’s going to be painful to have to listen to this Hinkley to Richmond nonsense weekly for the rest of the season we must hold our nerve here and stick to the plan.

They just farewelled a younger 3 time premiership coach citing burnout, they aren’t going to be interested in a the longest serving coach without a premiership 56 year old.

Losing Carr to Richmond is a genuine concern though, that is exactly the type of coach they’ll target.

Can we announce the succession plan in august or would that cause a fracture on the eve of finals?

If the succession plan is actually a thing, how do we actually announce it? I’m not convinced it is a thing but the idea has seemed to have grown legs but the august timeline doesn’t marry up with that sort of an announcement.

I think more likely is if we are in the top 4 in august they’ll re-sign Ken. I think we need to be prepared for that.

Whoever they get won’t be expected to win the flag, but to clean out the dead weight and bring in some star youngsters. Hinkley has shown he can do that.

He is also 56. After the success of Hardwick they’ll want to back in a younger coach for the long haul.

Hinkley is much more likely to end up at Gold Coast if he isn’t re-signed here. I’d say he is next to no chance of ending up at Richmond.

If the football media had any intellectual honesty, they would watch the proceedings at Port with great interest as to how the club and Ken behave. The media were all in glowing support of the club waiting until August when the chips were stacked against Ken earlier this year. Now that a position has opened up, and more may be coming, it will be interesting to see if Ken reciprocates this commitment when according to the media the chips are stacked in his favor (theyre not). Any hint that Ken is pressuring the club, or playing teams off against each other etc. should be jumped on. It would be a huge red flag as to the character of the man.

They won't though.

The other aspect to this...
We all thought the club saying "we'll address it in August" was stupid for one reason or another. When it happened it seemed strategically neutral, as August would offer us no extra intelligence over any other seasons minor round results. Worse, that call is now actively working against our favor. Now, not only will it work against us in that manner, but if we finish high up the ladder there will be leverage from Ken to not only force a re-sign, but also up his asking price. Unless the club actually do have something up their sleeve that isn't obvious, the decision is looking dumber than ever. We should have either sacked him at the end of last season or put it off to the end of 2023 to see how we did in finals. If that wasn't good enough for Ken, stuff it, let him walk. August was, seemingly, an incredibly stupid move.

You would hope that August comes and they agree to delay reviewing Ken's contractual situation until after the finals. Like you said, there's nothing we are going to learn between now and August that is going to justify extending him before the finals series.

Things are starting to turn. We've given Donuts contracts before his current one has ended, but this feels different.

The fact the club isn't falling over themselves to sign him up and that the media is doing all of the persuading has me somewhat convinced it may be time.

If the club is stupid enough to gift him another contract then I guarantee more middling results for 2024 once the dancing Donuts act is over and he's signed on the dotted line.

I think people need to get their heads around the fact that the club will not have the same 'premiership or bust' mentality that this board has. If Hinkley finishes top 4 there will be a contract extension on the table, irrespective of finals results.

The much more interesting scenario is a 5th-8th finish, which is also the most likely scenario at this point. Top 4 and it's an easy decision, bottom 10 and it's an easy decision. And the August deadline can be honoured in either situation. But the 5th-8th finish forces us into waiting until the end of the finals to make a call. It also handicaps us in any potential race for Hardwick. It's going to get real messy in the back end of the season I reckon.

Top 4 and it's an easy decision.
So repeat of 2021 final series and it's a no brainer to sign him up?

Sad days.

I suspect regardless of what we think or the spin coming out of the media, the decision, whatever that may be, has already been made.

They'll find, in retrospect, that they only ever had a bust mentality.

There would be a contract on the table in the event of a top 4 finish, sure. But that doesn't mean said contract would be a long term deal of 4 or even 5 years. Who is to say that the board wouldn't hedge their bets and offer Hinkley something in the vicinity of Chocos last contract which was a short term extension with a bunch of caveats in place to protect the club? And then who is to say Ken would accept such a deal if he had long term offers elsewhere?

There is a ton of what if scenarios at play right now and despite the media pile on, nothing is going to come to a head any time soon. If anything is certain it is that the contract situation surrounding Ken couldn't be more in the grey in a world where everyone wants everything to be black or white.

The only way an offer comes to Hinkley is if we make the Grand Final (outside of us that is) nobody wants an old coach and nobody is going to offer an old coach the tenure he needs to be successful. In Stinkers case that might be 40-50 years.

I've got no doubt any extension at Port would be 2 years. And it would seem well out of character for Koch to put any onerous performance based clauses in the contract.

I also don't think he's as in demand elsewhere as the media make him out to be. I can't see any club except the SUNS offering him their top job.

The irony of all of this is that despite our stability mantra we are cultivating a very unstable environment. Sure, it's not apparent right now, but it's still May and we haven't lost a game in nearly two months. As the season goes on and we inevitably lose a few, the pressure is going to mount.

Depends if he keeps winning and makes it to a GF. You’d have to be a moron to sack a premiership coach and you’d be crazy not to have an amicable goodbye if we didn’t make a prelim. Talking about it in May is futile when the message has been clear about a decision in August.

For all the ups and downs over the past decade I'd still love to see us win a flag and him get a chance to celebrate it before handing over the reigns to Carr and heading up to the Gold Coast next year.

Also I think he needs to win at least one flag to break even on the co-captains debacle.

Don't forget the Crows may be looking for a new coach at seasons end too, Port need to make their move now.
