That's a throw away line. Perhaps I should have explained my logic in more detail.

Trading Sidebottom is a hypothetical which doesn't suggest that I want that to necessarily happen, or that I don't love the club any less than anybody else here. Sure some may find it contentious, however it stimulates debate and discussion.

Sure, I agree there is a fine line that a club must maintain with loyalty to players and supporters etc.. to manage equilibrium, but winning premierships is business and sometimes very difficult decisions need to be made for the greater good.

We have a pretty healthy bunch of mids now (and upcoming) and there is a strong consensus that we're short of a couple of KPPs across the board and keeping our 1st Rd pick for this year's draft could land a Brander type KPP?

Although some people would be very disappointed with losing Sidey, an audacious coach/line manager may realise that "you need to give something to get something".

Would this hypothetical trade/draft scenario (with a mature/young variable) be a win or a loss for the club 2018?

In: Lever, Reid, Brander
Out: Sidey, 1st Rd (2017)

I wouldn't have thought this to be bannable?

I was only joking! Sidey playing for the Navy Blues would be hard to stomach no matter how practical a move it may be so it equates to blasphemy :D.

In regards to Lever I fear we may be selling the farm for a key defender in the early days of his career. He will be on top dollar and cost a lot in trade value, but not actually make a huge impact on our results as its not an area we are necessarily failing in.

I was in favour of chasing Reid as a FA until he signed up with the Swans again. A KPF would be lovely but they are not worth over paying for anymore like they once were. I like the Ben Reid/Moore combo at the moment and I am interested in what McLarty will bring next year. As options dry up in the key forward area, rather than throw money at a not ideal player maybe we need to just hold our nevre & our high picks and focus on some smarter role playing types that complements what we have. Liam Jones has shown that those players are there for a bargain if your list managers are smart enough.

Serious question?
Is Tom Rockliff looming as leaving QLD?
Are we interested? Is he of interest to us?

Is he worth it?

Assuming deal doesn't cost the farm

Watch this space, IMO. Bringing him in allows us to trade out quality to give extra currency to land a tall.

Steele + for Lynch. Sign Rockliff to replace Steele. Food for thought.

There was an article somewhere the other day saying Port were the front runners.
I think I heard that.

But might be as sco suggested a watch this space.
Unsure we'd trade out Steele, but can see us making a bold trade and move some quality.

Wouldn't mind him coming but curious to see where people see him playing? Personally if he comes I could see him being a forward for us. Moore and Reid (draft a key tall to develop) with Rocky as the medium tall?
After seeing what Danger did playing as pure full forward, Rocky is similar in a sense that he is a strong marking unit and he could he be a 35-45 goal kicker for us. He's also spent a lot of his younger days playing as a permanent forward for Brisbane. Or would he release one our own mids to the forward line or be trade bait for a key forward?

Thoughts?

Fantastic work Snoop. Like you, I am hoping Bucks survives as well. I know it may seem irrational, but I think the guy can coach and with an ounce of luck injury wise, could have been seen as successful already.

I think you've been tough on Sier though. The boy is still only 19 and has had no luck with injury. Hine was obviously impressed enough to choose him as a 17 yo. From memory, he hadn't played much at junior level had he? I watched him at training this morning. He just looks like a thoroughbred and yet he rarely plays. At training he doesn't appear to read the play very well, but he gets another year for mine.

Agree that Blair, Oxley, Sinclair and Shade must be looked at closely. Hopefully Mayne will do us a favour and resign any day now.

Are you talking about Tom Lynch (suns) Scodog?

If so, are you suggesting to trade for him this year? Or do you think Pies may target him next season as he is a RFA next year right? Suns would fight tooth and nail for him considering the difficulty they face to keep any decent and mature player up there...

Think they would like an experienced player like Sidey though as Gazza will leave, but I'd be thinking they'd prefer to give up high picks instead.

What a coup that would be though.. Lever for our 1st Rd +... and Lynch for Sidey +..

Ah, so this was what the overall deal was in relation to Steele in the other thread.

Much more palatable with Lynch coming in as well. Would make our midfield brigade a bit too Grunty but if that gets Lynch over line this year then...

Not quite the discussion, but very similar. I would look to move Pendles into Steele's role on the outside.

For mine I think we will be delisting

White
Blair
Oxley
Sier
Schade
Sinclair - at best I think he will go to rookie list.
Crocker - I suspect they will persist but chance to go rookie list

and I would listen to any offers for;

Keefe
Langdon
Aish
Broomhead
Ramsay

I think we have a lot of depth on the list but not enough high end talent and from a list point of view I would delist / trade and aim up at getting more high end talent via trade / draft and Free agency and clear some space on the list.

Lever or McGovern would be a priority. I would prefer Lever because I think paired with Goldsack and Ben Reid they would control the back. For mine pick 6 and Broomhead would likely get that done. If Scharenberg then think you would get something back through an improved pick.

I would take Sam Reid as a Free Agent. he comes with risks but he is better than White bc he can actually read the ball in flight and move around multiple positions much better.

If there was somehow enough space to take Pittard as a running back that would be icing on the cake but Varcoe can play that role for a while yet.

None of that impinges on making a massive offer for Tom Lynch if he leaves but whilst there is a bit of talk about it you can't bank on it for mine and if they do appoint Buckley it would be madness.

That would give a side like;

B Pittard, Lever, Goldsack
HB Howe, B.Reid, Maynard
C Crisp, Pendlebury, Sidebottom
HF De Goey, Moore, Wells
F Fasolo, S.Reid, Elliott
Foll Grundy, Adams, Treloar
Int Scharenberg, Varcoe, Hoskin-Elliott, Greenwood

Depth

Mature - Dunn, Phillips, Thomas, Sinclair, Smith, Wills, Mayne
Kids - Kirby, Daicos, McCarthy, Crocker, McClarty

That would give you 30-32 senior / mature bodies and leave 10-12 spots for some kids. Reality is wouldn't make that many changes but the first priority should be to improve that best 22 and then aim for 10 more senior / mature types that can play at any stage with the balance as kids. This year not a bad year to have 5-6 picks between 20-50.

I have a very uneasy feeling that we will see Blair be offered another year. :(

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Sinclair I think they will persists with was in some good form prior to injury, gives us run and pace off HB and is still only 25. If he does another major injury then it will be bye bye next year imo.

Something I just do not understand, if I may ask?

Clubs would love to have a gun ten year ruckman of A grade potential.

So why when we have such a potential being would we even consider swapping him to use at best a C grade to B grade ruck option?

Just makes no sense to give away your prime beef in the hope you get a different slab of beef who might en be mutton dressed up as lamb.

Because people forget about the 2002 GF, the 2003 GF, the 2007 PF and most of the time under MM until Jolly got there!

I love Blairy but think his time had come before he was signed for this year and would have preferred to take a chance on another kid. If he gets another year you'd imagine it'd be another 11th hour decision akin what happened with this contract. Purely as cheap depth.

Agree, Sinclair is worth another year but it'd be make or break.

If we were to land lever can anyone see him being thrown forward? Even just to see if hes capable there.

Has the height is a good mark and from what ive seen is a nice kick.

Just a thought.

I don’t think we have enough assets to land anything major at the draft table, and wouldn’t be too keen to trade our first pick given the apparent wealth of key position players in this draft. There seems to be a lot more than previously, where only a few of the top 10-15 are full time midfielders.

My dream scenario is that we are able to draft either Balta (likened to Jon Marsh – who would have been perfect for us this year) or Clavarino (likened to Heath Grundy), they’re both Victorian boys and would fill the need of key backs, either as the second tall in Balta or full back in Clavarino. I’d prefer this over picking up Lever, as it means we get some more youth. It would also force the list management team to look for KPF options, either by trading this year or by trading/drafting/luring a FA next year.

In a perfect scenario, I would like to see a trade mentioned as above, trade out Sidebottom (or something of similar currency in a combination of two of Ramsay, Maynard, Broomhead, Aish or Philips) for Tom Lynch. Follow this up with signing Rockliff playing up forward as a free agent. Giving us a squad next year of:

Backs: Crisp, Dunn, Howe

Half Backs: Scharenberg, Reid, Maynard

Centre: Hoskin-Elliott, Adams, Pendlebury
Half Forwards: De-Goey, Moore, Rockliff

Forwards: Elliott, Lynch, Fasolo

Rucks: Grundy, Treloar, Wells
Int: Varcoe, Philips, Langdon/Goldsack, Greenwood

  • Solid backline where everyone is playing in their natural positons (perhaps Maynard is the exception who could push up the ground / swap with Pendlebury)

  • Midfield depth like we are used to

  • A forward line with a high CHF who can follow the ball around and be the second ruck in Moore and a figure head FF who can kick them from anywhere inside the arc. Crafty smalls who can crumb and kick goals, with Rockliff who is a proved goal kicker, who would be the Gunston type of player we have missed for years.

  • Interchange to change depending on the game, Greenwood to be a full time tager and a FWD/MID/BAC replacement to follow

  • Let Balta/Clavarino develop in the twos for the year and then replace Dunn after he retires at the end of 2018
