I'm just not sure you're taking into account how small this industry is. There are 18 senior coaches and maybe another 10 or 15 guys in the wings who could do the job. People who've been around the industry for a long time - like Walsh, or maybe Rath when at the AFL, or Dilena, or even Lethers - know a fair bit about all of them without even having the conversations.

Then given the club has just done a full review, they know what sort of coach they're not looking for, so that rules out a lot of candidates immediately. Basically there are probably only a handful who fit the bill. They could have sounded out each of them on Friday and over the weekend.

This isn't like hiring a barista at your local cafe, where there are hundreds who might apply. It's a tiny industry with a lot of known quantities.
Yet those conversations need to happy before any senior coach gets the job.

If he is signed on for a long term deal, eg 5 years you better believe there is an expectation to be a contender within that time.

I’m not sure that’s right.. if you have in your mind a proven commodity and that’s who you’ve targeted - why introduce an unknown.. you set out for the target. Get it. Why complicate the method.

No it doesn’t.

If the expectation is creating an elite environment that leads to onfield success.

Ross has proven runs on the board.

So if he ticks the boxes.

What do we gain from putting the other applicants through a lengthy interview process?

They may be able to do that. But Ross has done that. Twice.

If you were buying something.

You knew what you wanted that item to do and achieve for you.

And you found an item that does all things.

What are you gaining if the similar items you are comparing them against can’t categorically be proven to achieve what you want?

That is the crux of this “process” argument
I hope the people making the decisions don't have the narrow and limited viewpoint that you have that Ross Lyon is the only possible coach out there who can create standards.

I clearly didn’t say he could.

I was very clearly saying if he fits the requirements I’m looking for.

How do the others counter the fact they don’t have the runs on the board?

Common issue when applying and hiring.

lets say there are 20 questions we ask and he gives us the 20 answers we wanted to hear then why going looking for someone else.

Is runs on the board a requirement now?

Sure they won't have the highlights from over 8 years ago but given they haven't been out of a coaches box for years and have been coaching the modern game, they would have other assets they could bring to the role as a first time coach which almost all premiership coaches have been in recent history,

Yeah, and as I said because the numbers are so small, the conversations could easily have already happened over Friday and the weekend. And no, I'm not sure we gain much by having a candidate look at the list and say "oh yeah looks like Steeley and Sincs are your best players, would be good to get some more A-graders, blah blah blah".
