Hope the club takes note of all those who won’t renew their memberships solely because of Ross Lyon and puts them firmly at the end of the line for Grand Finals tickets.
I downgraded my membership two weeks ago on Friday, I was despondent not at the Saints, after 32 years as a member would have bailed long before now if that was the case. Just felt things conspired against us at the AFL and with Ratts resigned, I felt that we were going to be stuck in limbo, even with the best intentions of all involved. I just couldn't see light at the end of the tunnel.

The past week has been such a shock, the hiring of Lenny, and Walsh, the sacking of Ratts, the hiring of RTB, a whirlwind of change. My fears that the AFL stack the deck against us (and other smaller clubs) are still there, but I feel a bit of hope now that RTB will circle the wagons and we can start to fight back against the AFL thumb on the scales in favour of the big clubs and clubs like Sydney and Brisbane.

if he signs, I am going to upgrade my membership in a show of faith that the management actually want to do something and aren't just going to allow the barriers that the AFL throw up stop us.

Probably paywalled for most

St Kilda’s pursuit of Ross Lyon as their new coach continues apace, with the two parties edging closer to a reunion.

Sources close to Lyon say there have been no “surprise” issues bob up among broad and detailed conversations, with discussions ongoing.

Lyon met with Saints president Andrew Bassat and chief executive Simon Lethlean for more than four hours at Bassat’s home on Monday. Lyon and club officials were expected to meet again on Wednesday. Regardless, Lyon is the clear favourite to take charge.

The Saints want a “ruthless” mentor who can bring a hardened defensive edge to the side, while also embracing the need for a more attacking style encouraged by recent rule changes.

Meanwhile, industry sources said Port Adelaide’s list boss Jason Cripps was contracted to the Power, and would not head to Moorabbin.

thanks, appreciate the words. you are right. if he is appointed i won't like. if it happens, i will eventually have to come on board. i rarely i express my opinions on hear. please all, don't shout me down, as i rarely express my opinions about something so emphatically. Thanks in advance.:):D
I’m similar. Won’t be the biggest fan right now if he gets appointed. But happy to be wrong.

It wasn't opinions, you said the gameplan was kick it to Roo, your said it was the coaches fault we kicked too many points in the gf, you said Allen was a wasted pick when he was injured in a 2008 semi.

You have a right to your own opinion, but you don't have a right to your own facts. Also you denigrate our opinion with your rose coloured glasses swipe at us.
So forgive me if I have no sympathy when your posts are corrected with actual facts. This is what the football forum and we get to respond to others posts, you have the opportunity to respond to mine, and I promise you I wont play the victim.

Let me premise this post with the statement that I am on board. I think Ross will set good standards and squeeze more out of both individuals and the team.

I’m pretty confident he will get us closer to finals. I’m just not sure he can get us all the way there.

I don’t remember being overly angry when Ross left us. I actually remember being kind of relieved. I felt like his game style was dour and uninspiring. I also felt like he had ground players bodies to the point of breaking by making them play his dour defensive style.

I’m not saying that’s accurate, but it’s definitely how I felt at the time. And I’m not sure this Leopard can change its spots.

I remember losing grand finals with Ross Lyon, and I’m still dealing with the emotional ptsd that evolved around that. And we had such a great ******* team in comparison to our current list.

Winning games under Ross Lyon is not the end all be all for me. I would have preferred a younger coach with a new voice who can challenge and inspire the youngsters with a fresh football system. And maybe having Ross as Head of Football.

I hope Ross can get us playing an attractive potent game. But his reappointment only pays off if he takes us all the way to September glory. Any other result and this will be a monumental waste of time.

I agree with most of that but I don't think Ross has to get us to win a grand final. He needs to reset the standards before we start to lose players who give up waiting for something to happen. We want to be feared and respected again and not just a side that holds up the top half of the ladder. We've had to import some standards and systems because we ran the place down so badly that the club has lost all it's direction and was turning into a vanilla pudding.

And I think that's a huge part of being a Saints fan.

"We took our shot and missed, time to blow it up and start again"

Nah, Keep the gun coach and bring in some fresh voices - New assistants, couple new players, a few positional changes to freshen things up on field and challenge some blokes.

It takes a heap of selflessness and a willingness to trust the 'process' but that's waaaaaaay better than turfing the list and tanking for picks.
Would've helped if he didn't get up and leave

Shouting her down isn't going to bring her around. She has the right to not like the appointment and express her opinion. If it goes well I'm sure she'll jump on board quickly. Samm's a good poster and loyal Saint.
Well done mate

We all put a bit of mayo on our opinions. I am all in on Ross but I can see the reasons why some are a bit concerned about the appointment. Everything's a gamble but this is a sort of rehashed gamble. He's not the only path we could take and some are going to need time to come to terms with it.

If it stuffs up we'll all be piling on and see all the old issues as pointers that we should have recognised. If he takes us back up the ladder we'll all put it down to his genius instead of a good injury run and easier draw. Footy opinions are very black and white.
Im not 100% sold on Ross because i personally dont know that he has adressed the issues he had as a coach before and if he is up to coaching speed with footy in 2023 (which to be fair Ratts clearly hadnt and wasnt).

I am 100% sold on Lethers, Bassat and co. doing their due dilligence and ensuring they are comfortable. Theyve had like 10 hours facetime with him now, ive had 15 seconds of media reports. Ill back them over me to get it right.

I do sort of love that after 202 pages people are still giving shit to the suit and tie powerpoint preso thing, im pretty confident only i actually said that and i absolutely qualified it with saying that i didnt expect it actually would happen, i wouldnt really care if it didnt and that its just what i personally would do if i was hiring someone to coach an AFL side (which im not and never will).

My take on RTB returning is he was a briliant coach the first time around, who did everything in his power to win us a flag. I believe his experience/s since that time will only make him a more rounded and even better coach now.

He has had time to reflect on both stints, to understand and work on his short comings. Plus our club is in a much better position to manage and support him this time around. Walsh is an excellent operator and I can see them working well together.

Im am 100% behind his appointment and brimming with the excitement he will generate. Bring on 2023 and Ross the Boss!

Have you read the ‘Why Lyon left’ article thats in the media thread?

I can’t see why anyone could blame him for running.

Admittedly haven't, but isn't that just one side of the story? Our management of the club was stuffed at the time but he had a year to run on his contract.

Solidly believe that a list makes a coach. I think that if Ross can get the most out of this list we are a genuine finals team. He is not going to take us from 10th to a premiership next year. He is not the messiah, I think most of us understand that, and can understand reservations.

I feel he can get more out of the list while we try to attract or draft the top end talent. I think I am mainly happy that the club has taken decisive action and will change up the club.
We are all sick of being an irrelevant also ran. Will this guarantee success? Can't tell, but doing what we had done guaranteed irrelevance I feel.

Anyway lets see.

Agree with all of this

Yep.

I'm really interested to see what he does with the 6-6-6 and the stand rule.

As I said, he was an innovator before, I can't see why he can't be again.

Agreed on Lenny and Enright. The one person I don't want to see get lost in all the St Kilda past players thing is Enright. I think we're very lucky to have him.
The 6-6-6 impacts 15 seconds of the game.

He will want half forwards pushing right up to lock the ball in. He will set up 2 midfield sweepers if “Gawn is feeding Oliver and they are kicking goals every other minute” as someone put it the other day or expect Marshall to nullify the tap and bring the ball to ground.

The stand rule. Different. That impacts the game for both sides irrespective of talent.
