Are those part statements incorrect?
Been plenty on here not happy with decisions made by Lethers and the Pres and all of a sudden those same people are really happy with them? Talk about an easily pleased bunch.

The point is that it was more an attempt at ass saving. How can you give a bloke a contract extension in the same month you start a review?

If you're going to make this call. Be upfront and honest. Put all the cards on the table. Not hide behind things.
I thought they did explain exactly why they gave him the extension (with the rumoured clause that he could be flicked if we didn't play finals).

The review was actually a thorough one & not simply a facade. "It finished a month ago & I've spent the last month trying to find another outcome".

And isn't every sacked coach presser an exercise in arse saving?

I didn’t hear whatever it was that Purple said but, honestly, when was the last time he had an opinion that was somewhat insightful and interesting rather then just some sensationalist crap.

Pay him no attention.

IF: He never says a word against North, even though their rebuild is one of the most monumental stuff ups ever , but he puts the boots into anything and everything StKilda.

THEN: He must be a poor journalist. A good journalist wouldn't let his preferences for and against certain teams influence their work.

Lyon left the club in an absolutely terrible position and was awful for our young players. He'll no doubt get a better performance out of our squad but unless he's changed his ways a lot I really don't like the sound of this.
Lyon was a bounce off a flag and didn’t get a chance to rebuild/tool because the club kept lowballing him

Risky has been pretty consistent with his Ratts info. I believe he has a contact. Probably is pretty petty the reasoning but it wasn't a single thing, more consistent vanilla standards.
Would like to see George ban you if you continue to use the word vanilla to sum up all you dislike or do not understand.
Enough. Upgrade your vocabulary gringo2011 or get thee gone.

Anyway. After watching that - I don’t see how a newbie coach is appointed to address the issues they touched on.

Agree.

My impression is that the review believes the list is much better that it is showing and that they need a senior coach to get it to reach its potential.

Code for appointing an experienced coach.

Buyer beware on Ross Lyon — remember he’s never rebuilt a club.

Would he need to rebuild St Kilda? This is a team that missed finals on percentage only, where in years past we would've made finals with our 2022 win/loss record. Surely we've got enough ingredients already in place that we just need a good game plan, buy-in from the group and a few more top end players. St Kilda aren't as bad off as North Melbourne or Essendon.

Does he need to rebuild this list though?

2020 - 10W : 7L (17 game season)
2021 - 10W : 12L
2022 - 11W : 11L

The messaging from Lethers and Bass seemed pretty clear: We think the list is capable of more and that standards were not held to a high enough account.

Much like the GT and Lyon transition, there might be a 12 month lag while he gets things lined up, but 2024 the board would be expecting finals as a minimum I'd think.

The talk for years was that Ross is a 'finishing' coach, perfect to take over an underperforming list and drive it into contention.

If he's the man they've targeted, that will be the plan.

I like the idea of Ross and Lenny but I don’t like the idea of a succession plan. It can breed disharmony and that’s the last thing this club needs.

In fact, I love the idea of Ross Lyon. I don’t think he would accept lazy output from players or players coming into preseason out of shape. That’s what we need.

We need a coach who can get the best out of the players, not a coach who is the best friend of the players.

The same Ross Lyon who ran our list into the ground, left for more money elsewhere and then ran Freos list downhill. Great short term coach if you can overlook his mercenary move.

Lyon was given too much power in his previous role with us and the club management structure was all set up ( remnant of Thomas ) in the dictator model.

If we had a head of development reporting directly to Walsh it would be better. I'd also make it pretty clear in the job description that he needs to support player development. Yes Ross, we'd want you down at Sandy sometimes.

Saints were screwed on Salary cap back then, Coach should be involved in drafting and trading obviously, but its only an input, its not the management of the list. ( Back then dictator had too much clout ).
Its the list manager has to determine if we can afford what the coach wants. List manager should also have some say in maintaining the age demographic, otherwise its easy to burn the bridges with a lot of mature players to make the coach look good.

It was because he blew a lot of his money on stupid investment decisions and was broke so he took Freo's money and ran.

That is also true, but our list now and in 2007 are night and day talent wise, so exactly what he'd be able to achieve 2023 onwards is speculation. All we do know is that he was terrible for the young / out of favour players when he was with us.

Yeah I think losing

I think you’re over estimating our list

Yeah I do think we need to rebuild (not a full). We have too many holes in our list and also an imbalanced from an age demographic whether it’s next year or year after, it will happen.

We need another ruckman, we need another forward, we need a running half back and we need 2x class mids. A lot of spine is missing

That's the appeal though, we don't NEED rebuilding.

We're primed as best we can be with this group to contend for a flag in the next 3 years.

3 years from now Steele, Marshall, Sinclair, Wilkie etc will ALL be turning 30 or have already done so.

It's eerie how similar the situation is now to when we first hired ross.

GT had us playing exciting, attacking footy but with no real system or tactics- we were cooked at the pointy end of the year.

Similarly here, ratts and rath have been all about 'just go out and play- make magic happen'.

Again, sometimes it works and we run red hot- but we get found out against the best when it matters.

We need someone LIKE ross, to bring SOME system to our play- without stamping out ALL of our attack and creativity.

I'm warming to the idea of ross lyon the sequel....
Only IF he is willing to admit he went too far in stamping out creative flair at both the saints AND freo in the past.

If he is willing to change his approach and accept that scoring 60 points a game will never cut it- then I'll be happy to welcome him back.

Because we really do need a guy like him to bring SOME system into our play... just not too much.
