You have thrown part statements out there.

He said we would get the key components of the review in the next few days.

They said they would talk about the process but wouldn’t share that today - which is clearly because they wanted to make it about moving on from Ratten and making it clear we think he is a top bloke. As opposed to shitting on him as a nobody.

Are those part statements incorrect?
Been plenty on here not happy with decisions made by Lethers and the Pres and all of a sudden those same people are really happy with them? Talk about an easily pleased bunch.

The point is that it was more an attempt at ass saving. How can you give a bloke a contract extension in the same month you start a review?

If you're going to make this call. Be upfront and honest. Put all the cards on the table. Not hide behind things.

I may be alone on this… but a return to the grinding awful football, and “inner circle-ism” of the Lyon era is the LAST thing I want…
The first thing I want is a successful football team. If that’s what Ross can bring, then I don’t care if he doesn’t talk to player #40 for the year.
Wow.

“The review would have finished a month ago if I wasn’t trying to come to a different outcome”

I missed that, but I was impressed with Bassat. Not that it means much, I swallow everything the club puts out hook line and sinker.

He talked mid last year about improving standards at the club and what he could do to personally be better, yet here we are 18 months down the line in this situation.

And not one single person will be held accountable for the debacle of the last 10 years.

What ass saving? They owned everything. They took responsibility.

What did you want them to say?

You’re complaining because they didn’t release the review findings today. But said they will in the next few days.

Of course Damian Barrett is immediately critical saying 'it was just words'.

Talk about writing your own narrative.

******* knob.

It is just words. We’ve heard all the same nonsense for years now, and from the two sitting at that table.

A nice press conference today, appoint a new coach next week and business as usual.

I like Bassett.

IMO clique-type “groups within groups” had a significant amount to do with our lack of development around the 2009-2012 period.

Sure, we all love a flag, we’d probably do unspeakable things for one, but that’s not the way to do it, OR to achieve sustained success…
Need a flag before we can even think about sustained success.

They re-signed a coach the same month that they started a review!
It's incompetence at its best. And both blokes expect to keep their positions?

Don't know about you but in most jobs you doing something like that and you're out the door real quick.

I'm coming around to Ross The Boss Lyon at the helm.

Knows the game so well, sets supreme standards and will be in immediate harmony with Lenny Hayes.

He has the aura of a Coach that our current players, and prospective players will want to play for.

A culture setter.

3 year Paul Roos type deal.
Year 1: Do what you want Ross, build the standards. We'll search for your Transition Coach.
Year 2: Transition Coach in as Snr Assistant.
Year 3: Transition year. Ross still in charge.

Surely that would be a selling point to players, supporters and a prospective Coach.

Don't take Barrett (or any other AFL journalist's) doomsday commentary too seriously. With trade week over, the AFL media cycle is dead until the draft (and even then the draft gets significantly less interest than trade week and pre-season). It's nothing more than people trying to drum up interest in online AFL content and talkback radio, by framing the situation as dramatically as possible.

I thought Basset was very reasonable and owned up to the shortcomings of the club in re-signing Ratten. It's never a good day at a footy club when a Coach is sacked, but to draw comparisons to the Essendon situation is riddiculous. As a supporter, I'm grateful they made this decision now before the season starts - as it seems we were headed for a mid-season sacking (and another wasted season) if they'd let him continue in the job into 2023.

Everyone has already said that’s embarrassing.

The presser had to show we owned that and why.

We Owned it and they said the why in the form of the key findings would be released to us soon.

They said enough in that presser to paint a picture.

They said our list has underperformed.

Don't think you have dealt with many boards and how they operate. They see a problem, they put together a 'review' they put the heads on the spike, and the head is rarely theirs.
Incompetence is one finals appearance in over a decade, and constantly being mid table.

I like the idea of Ross and Lenny but I don’t like the idea of a succession plan. It can breed disharmony and that’s the last thing this club needs.

In fact, I love the idea of Ross Lyon. I don’t think he would accept lazy output from players or players coming into preseason out of shape. That’s what we need.

We need a coach who can get the best out of the players, not a coach who is the best friend of the players.
