Those thinking the club need to get the next appointment right or it’s over are either opposition supporters or new supporters. The club has and will nearly always be a basket case. That’s the reason I love the club. The club will also survive whether we make the right or wrong decision. The big question is will is older people be alive to see a right decision. If you are young don’t worry we will be around for as long as the afl is. No side could be as bad as us and last 149 years if we weren’t born to survive. We had no right to even be in the vfl and to stay in the vfl after losing the first 48 games of the start of the vfl. And then win our first game on protest. Born to survive but not succeed. Actually love that to be our moto.
I just paid my membership for this year, thanks for this perspective.

If my commemorative membership card looks shit I'm going to ****ing flip the **** out.

I just watched the presser for the first time and have made a few assumptions

They kept talking about leadership style and characteristics… reading between the lines I viewed that as ratts being nurturing and a good bloke but not being hard enough , setting standards accountabilities and structures … was all pointing toward Ross imo

For what it’s worth I honestly thought they handled themselves well in that presser . I’ve got a lot of confidence in Bassett at the helm , he’s thorough, took his time to make that decision and is aggressive in seeking the right outcomes for us

Yes it was a balls up re signing and back flipping but I don’t really care I thought he explained all of that quite well

Has Andrew Bassett got any idea of how to run a football club? Seriously. He might have made money out of seek.com. But it doesn’t follow from that, that he is the right person to be the President of an AFL club. Surely he should now resign.
He doesnt run the club. The Ceo and the board run theclub. The president is a representative on behalf of the supporters and members. Were lucky we have him. Hes an old animal enclosure supporter at moorabbin and a true saints fanatic. He wants another premiership and if it gets tough hes not just going to pack it in and become president of the local yacht club. And hes loaded of course with good contacts.

Yes, the club is a basket case, or, as Walsh put it, irrelevant, but we know that and keep coming back for more.

Isn't the President effectively chairman of the board and the CEOs boss? He guides the club and the CEO runs it accordingly.

He was last successful as a coach 8 years ago.

They say a weeks a long time in footy…

It bears consideration that there was no soft cap, no 6-6-6, stand, rotation limits were different etc etc. the last time he was good.
So the 6-6-6 should in theory help his contested lockdown game style and lack of goal scoring.

Rotations should also help as his generally has one of the fittest sides in the game.

It’s all hypothetical and ultimately THIS is the least important aspect of what we need.

This part here is where Rath Enright Lenny etc help with.

It’s the standards and development of players that is appealing. That’s what they touched on today.

No mention of X and Os

Ratten is a whole lot like Richo. Top tier human beings who you would LOVE to live next door to. I think both would make excellent assistant coaches.
Yeah the whole media outcry is simply because we shot Bambi.

Unfortunately Bambi won't coach you to a
flag. Sometimes you've just got to eat the venison

No bullshit waste of my time and money im a storm member thats enough for me. I enjoy being part of a proffesional organisation. We will start in c grade VAFA when we fold.
The day just keeps getting better - take the other Cooper with you please, you can both live happier lives without the club and us

It’s funny how snobby we are in the AFL about coaches of a certain age or time away from the game or coming back to a previous club.

This stuff is common in world football.

In fact

Nuno Espirito Santo is 46....What's Ross LYON about 10 years older...those 10 years are significant ROSS LYON is more in the retirement plan scenario. The 47 year age group is a pretty healthy demographic for the search to focus...the right mix of message youth experience. What is McRAE for arguments sake? 47?

Its not to say there isn't a place for the near 60 year old!

6-6-6 worked to open up the game not lock it down..

In any event we don’t know if he can or even wants to work within the system we’re talking about.

What I remember of Ross is that he was a full autocratic style of coach that didn’t want anyone to manage anything without his detailed oversight.

Again, if he interviews and fits the bill then great. Nothing currently suggests to me that’s the case.

He has a philosophy on what the club should focus on and look like. Takes a true xupporter to understand our club. An outsider just wouldnt get it unless you have lived it as we all have. Not sure if they can throw their weight around willy nilly .

The only stipulation I'd put to Ross if he's appointed is, "no playing Max King as a loose man in defence."

The board does governance, which means overseeing and ratifying strategy and big decisions, but that’s slightly different to actually formulating strategy or making big calls.

So you are suggesting he's too old and not relevant?

Yes but he was in WA so that's more like 1985 in real terms.

Seriously, what does this team look like if they're fit? What does it look like if every single player is giving 110% because not doing that means you're playing 2nds.

Does Ross take this team to a flag? I don't know, but I think he will at the very least get more out of what we have than other coaches have in the past.
We will undoubtedly be better under Ross but will we win a premiership with him or not? If he is there as a succession plan to a untried coach I am fine with it but if we're banking on him to win us a flag then I can't see how that happens.

I'm sick of waiting, our next appointment needs to be someone who is tough and ruthless but also innovative with current day ideas on gameplan and strategy.

I don't think simply saying Lyon is the best candidate makes it so. He's been out of the game 3 years and hasn't made finals in 8. The game has dramatically changed since he was a successful coach. That's what I'm worried about, that he will come to St.Kilda too stubborn to shift from the way he has set up sides tactically in the past and then we end up doing better but ultimately not winning anything.

Honestly I'd much prefer an untried coach from a strong system, an assistant from Geelong or Sydney for example, sides that have been consistently strong for 20 years.
