You could say the same about literally any person appointed to the position. The press conference today was clear, they're looking for a certain style of coach and I think Lyon fits that requirement. Maybe I'm wrong. But if Lyon fails, how is it any different to if Nathan Buckley fails or Adam Yze fails?
I said this before but if we at least go through a process (CHRIST I’ve typed that word out a lot today) and the person appointed after that fails (which lets be honest is still the most likely outcome) we won’t die wondering. We will know we did everything we could to get it right.

If we just hand Lyon (or anyone for that matter) a contract now without even bothering to check them out then we deserve to fail and even if we succeed it will be by luck not design.

You’re acting like he is going to be a fundamentally different coach because of his time out.

He will most likely be 95% of the same coach at worse.

And you know what… interviews 😂 most the time the big jobs are already filled and it’s a fluff exercise.

If we call him and say look we are keen. Are you?

And he comes down to Moorabbin presents to the key members of our process and they say yes.

Then I don’t need to hear about other applicants.

I actually want to go all in on him. It will right a decade old wrong and maybe fix the “feng shui” in the place.
yeah, but he has known weaknesses. an offensive game style ( the thing that is in IN VOGUE RIGHT NOW). couldn't get it to work at Freo and it got him sacked ( among other things).

whilst he has some strong attributes, I'm not sure those same attributes cant be found elsewhere and in other forms. Ross always had a very authoritarian style and yes it worked its not the only way.

For me its a new coach, Richo, and then Ratten, 2 old blokes.
Go new, nothing to be gained by recycling again

If we pick him without even contemplating anyone else. Then yes it will be a massive difference.

Can only hope the club isn't as fixated on 1 individual as fans on here seem to be.

I think today has allowed me, and maybe others, to reflect and perhaps realise I am still a big fan of Ratts the person, but maybe not Ratts the coach. I’m disappointed for him, but not for our club in a way.

I think we tried to fire up the PR and ride our mid-year momentum with the extension at that time, which is why the sacking now looks untidy but maybe it’s just ripping a slightly more expensive Band-Aid off. Good luck to Ratts and no doubt he’ll be a line coach elsewhere as soon as he wants a gig.

Appointing a coach is always a big thing, but this feels like a pretty critical juncture right now for us.

Like plenty have said in this thread already, I just want to go to the footy with that confidence of knowing what we’ll see and get from the St. Kilda Football Club. I don’t give a **** who gets appointed, as long as they bring that trust back for us.

Completely ignoring the structure he is coming into if it is him.

Which actually would cover his deficiencies and would allow him to recruit HIS forward coach that would support his style.

If we get back Ross Lyon I’m done he ****ed us over years ago we had a gun team roo kosi dal Joey bj fisher etc and yeah we came mighty close to a flag but at the end of the day we got nothing then when the wheels starting off he bailed out on the club

1) James Hird should not be able to work in any capacity in the AFL system and/or anywhere he would have a developmental role over young adults.

2) I admit I am bias when it comes to RTB, from not playing kids like Tom Lynch or Tommy Walsh to the way he exited my boy Baker and Eddy or The insipid response he got from such a highly skilled group in the GF replay; that is when a real coach shines.

3) As I contradict myself here by saying you should never judge anyone on past performances A coach's win/loss record or GF appearances should have no bearing on his ability to coach a team he has never worked with before. In his first year Chris Scott win's, Longmire and Beveridge's in their second year wins, Craig McRae reshaped Collingwood into a formidable team in his first season or you can look at Hardwick who was at the helm for 9 years before winning.
An untried coach is as likely to be successful as an experienced coach that has not won a GF before.

4) A close friend believes we should be all in on Ashley Hansen, thinks he has a fantastic coaches brain and that he is one of the best motivators he has heard in a long time, I know nothing about him so interested to know what others think of him.

5) Whatever decision we make I will be continuing my membership because I mean really come on its St Kilda we knew what we signed up for.

It is not hard to have your eye on the prize. Anyone can do that. It’s the judgment yiu make along the path to eventually holding the prize in your hand, once you’ve got it. I question Bassett’s judgment. Only 100 days ago he was ultimately responsible for re-appointing Ratten. What changed after that? They lost a few games. Most of them, not by much. So?
did you fail comprehension?

The first thing I want is a successful football team. If that’s what Ross can bring, then I don’t care if he doesn’t talk to player #40 for the year.

I missed that, but I was impressed with Bassat. Not that it means much, I swallow everything the club puts out hook line and sinker.

He talked mid last year about improving standards at the club and what he could do to personally be better, yet here we are 18 months down the line in this situation.

And not one single person will be held accountable for the debacle of the last 10 years.
Why would you hold people who are no longer there accountable? That just makes you sound like a whiny bitch

Just focus on the future....**** the past, can't change that

Brut - with all due respect you have continually backed a couple of absolute loser coaches! Your credentials to evaluate a coach are farked! RTB would be an amazing appointment after Watters, Richo & Ratts…
Well I’m glad you said that “with all due respect….” 🤣

I gathered from what Stav said that we want him to come in and see if it's coaching holding the list back or the list holding the coach back. Financially we can't afford another 4 year rebuild so maximising the list as it is and throwing some glitter over it by attracting high end players to a list on the up might even get us close with a bit of luck.

Basically they have already as good as appointed him before the sacking. Going through a pretend Essendon process for the sake of acting might make us fans feel better but I doubt it will change anything.

Also a structure he’s never worked under before and may not suit his style and application at all.

You talk about others ignoring stuff but you’re doing the same and it’s the exact point most people are making.

Ross might be the best fit but we don’t know that right now, run a panel led process to see if what he is now is all the best bits of what he was 8-10 years ago with the malleability to work in the new system we want to run.

If he is and he’s the best candidate then sign him up for sure.

You’re just making the assumption that he’s what he was but better in spite of there being zero evidence that’s the case.

Who was responsible for those appointments that are no longer there? I'm talking specifically at the board level, at Andrew Bassat and perhaps at Lethlean if he was involved with Richo's extension.

maybe, possibly, but we also know Ross, override, over rule, no no my way.

don't be a Lion tamer Stavro, a wild animal can never be tamed

Ratten is a whole lot like Richo. Top tier human beings who you would LOVE to live next door to. I think both would make excellent assistant coaches.

Why all the love for Ross Lyons? Am I the only one who remembers how he decimated the club as he walked out the door?
I remember as well, in fact, we are still trying to rebuild from the Lyon era.

If we do get him back into coaching will he bail after a couple of years if someone offers him a bigger cheque ?

I’d argue that Watters & Richo decimated the club more than Ross. We still haven’t recovered from the Richo era.

It was as much the austerity measures under Finnis that cost us. Not spending on the footy department is the best way to make yourselves irrelevant and after a period of painful instability we craved a safe steady path with no bumps. Finnis' was a safe low risk era and we played like it. Richo was screwed by that stability where we kept incompetents in roles over upsetting the stars quo.

I don’t think anyone wants the pretend process.

I (and I assume I speak for others) want a fair and equitable process with clear parameters and criteria before it starts. Interview the best candidates (plural) with a structure to ensure fair and accurate assessment of them all.

If coaches don’t want to participate in that, no probs, they are not who or what we want.

If they do and they come out on top then that is out guy.

If that’s Ross fantastic.

If it’s someone else, great.

Tunnel vision on Ross for ANY reason is stupid. Tunnel vision on anyone is stupid.

I said the same thing about North wirh Clarko for what it’s worth.

No bullshit waste of my time and money im a storm member thats enough for me. I enjoy being part of a proffesional organisation. We will start in c grade VAFA when we fold.
OK Bye then…
