I'm warming to Ross the Boss

Think he would get the best out of a few

Think we can definitely make the finals with better game plan/internal standards/ player improvement, like the president said, we need to re-build the foundations, and make sure we set high standards. The list is not bad especially the forward line. Backline is functional but mids can see the most improvements.. We do have some capable players there (Steele, Crouch, Ross, Jones), will need a good system to bring the best out of the group..

Forward line
  • Talls: King, Membrey, Battle
  • Smalls: Butler, Higgins, Gresham

Grade: B+
Apart from Battle who has a high ceiling as CHF, link up player, all othe forwards are proven.. King and Membrey capable of 50 goals a season and smalls are capable of 30 goals a season

Backline Line
  • Talls: Howard, Cordy, Wilkie
  • Smalls: Paton, Sinclair, Webster

Grade: B
Yes, our backline stood up most times this season, but some of that is because the mids flooded back to clog up space, our 1 on 1 defending is still suspect and moving the ball out of back line is dire at best

Midfield
  • Ruck: Marshall,
  • Centre: Steele, Crouch, Jones, Ross
  • Wing: Hill, Mckenzie

Grade: C+
The most problematic area, not bad on paper.. but out of Steele, Crouch, Jones and Ross, only Steele and Crouch are B+ level and consistent, needs Jones and Ross to step up with support from young players like Bytel, Owens, Winghager.. Having a better system will help, at times it looks like we cannot get our hands to the ball first so always playing catch up.. We need the midfield to assert more control e.g. win more contested ball, and transition the ball better to the forwards.. this will go a long way to make us consistent, and playing a better brand of football.. The current side way chip and long bomb make the midfield inefficient because of the congested/contested style we often found ourselves in.

Just as a point of interest has there been many Coaches that have left a club for a number of years and returned to that Club to achieve anything much?

Luff told them the club is underperforming based on the battle??

That doesn't fill me with confidence.
Are you blokes okay?

It should fill you with plenty of confidence.

Firstly it further supports a legitimate review. We paid for outside consultation

Secondly, it supports the internal opinion on the list. Which is important.

Couple of things.
1) Brett Ratten would feel down about losing a job, but it is nothing compared to losing a child, Ratts will be fine I reckon.
2) where are the posters saying the review would be window dressing? Seems comprehensive, we have lost a coach, with the news on Luff reviewing the list management reckon Gags could be next.
3) if people don't want a Selwood at the club they are not serious about professionalism or a flag.

The only two I can find are Matthews - sacked by Collingwood then he went on to win 3 with Brisbane; and Blight - got fired by the Cats (I think?) before winning a couple of flags with Adelaide.

Apart from that none that I can find. But I'm not sure if that's because clubs generally don't like hiring recycled coaches.
Matthews won the 1990 flag as an untried coach. Might have to dig a bit deeper haha.

Edit - Blight, you're right. Coached North and Geelong before taking Adelaide to a flag. So the last time a tried coach won a flag on another go-around was 1997.

Parkin at Carlton probably the only one he won a flag first time and second so it has been a success the only time I can remember that scenario even happening in the last 30 years

The timeline suggests Walsh had nothing to do with it.

The review was handed down a month ago.

They only brought Ratten's job into review on Sunday as per Bassat in the presser the other day.

Is it just me or are opposition supporters a hell of a lot more angry and invested into the sacking as we are?
More of a celebration on here I'd say. Feeling for Ratts of course but personally am bloody excited (and worried)...depends if we get it right.

The same guy that was responsible for the List Management at North for 2 and a bit years?

How are they going again?

I'd be more confident talking to list managers of more successful clubs. Surely you would too yes?

Footy is a super tough gig, few opportunities and skill sets not particularly transferrable to other industries.
I'm sure Luff's list review was near the mark regardless of where he ended up afterward.

Jesus Christ. Some of the excuses for it not to be Ross 😂

Ultimately it is very simple.

Don’t even think about flags and grand finals.

An ELITE ENVIRONMENT.

That’s what the next coach needs to create.

Without that, you get none of the flags and success we crave.

Ross doesn’t have to come in and be our premiership coach. He needs to come in and sort the place out.

It could be the person who comes in after him that gets the success - and that’s okay and it doesn’t need to be a planned transition either.

Again I keep repeating myself. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT WE HAVE.

Is the list good enough?

What is the true deficiencies of it?

Is our recruitment s**t or is it coaching? Both?

If it is good, just how good is it? Can we rectify it via free agency? Is it good enough with the core we have + increase our spending into the footy department?

The reason I’m hell bent on Lyon. Is because I know in 12 months time. We can answer all of these questions.

I’m not putting the expectation of him needing to be our next premiership coach.

My expectations are A football club I’m proud of. That is relevant. That doesn’t constantly let us down when the lights shine on us.

We don’t need to over complicate it and we don’t need to be sheeps in process nor decision because the league dictates it must be done this way or that or second or third time round coaches fail.

We are so far away from being relevant. Let’s start small and let’s bring someone in that can gives us answers and set expectations of us internally.
I don't think many disagree with you, all we're saying is that an untried coach can do all of what you're saying, like McRae has done at Collingwood, and still have the potential of being the diamond in the rough that could create a dynasty ala Clarkson coming on as untried at Hawthorn and Hardwick coming on as untried at Richmond.

Ross Lyon isn't the only answer to creating an elite environment.

Lyon will probably turn dmac into a Selwood clone winning our best and fairest and finishing top 3 in the Charlie.

We have so many not playing even close to their potential
  • Billings
  • DMac
  • Clark
  • Coffield
  • King (yes, it’s scary how much better he can be with better delivery)
  • Higgins
  • Battle
  • Bytel
  • Gresham
  • Hill (he has gone backwards under Ratten)
  • Jones

Whoever the new couch is, he needs to get every ounce of talent from these players.

I haven’t read the thread - apologies if repeated info.
Ross Lyon 100% per very good mail
If you are right lets hope there is some future proofing in place. If he's coming on board it would be great if he could mentor the likes of Hayes or Enright to take over in a couple of years. I would prefer we go in fresh here, but I am okay with Ross provided we can see there's a succession plan in place.

[*]He has to work with others not run the whole show if we are going to improve and he has to work with Walsh and Lethlean. He will need to buy into the strategy that we set as a club and stick to his lane. This fear is probably more based on his time with us than with Freo and probably a reflection on the incompetence of the rest of the club last time around.
