I think they knew Walsh was coming. That came out very early. Do we know Lyon is actually lined up? The ratts was was a shock but then again it still got out before the club wanted it to.
It only got out after we told ratts. So the leak didn't come from inside the club

One of the issues for Brett is the standards you set from day one are so important. The talk of people late to meetings etc when they did that review last year was concerning. He struggled to set standards early and was probably pushing shit up hill after that.

No doubt he would have said to Bassatt he can improve but the tone you set as a leader from the start really sticks and is hard to change.

This has Walsh written all over it. Four days after he's announced by the club, the board goes and lets Ratten know his job is under threat. No coincidence IMO

The timeline suggests Walsh had nothing to do with it.

I'm not worried about RTB updating his game plan, if you hear him reviewing games and team's style of plays, he still has his finger on the pulse!

More than that he's a draw card to players, to prospective coaches and brings immediate respectability.

If nothing else, our team needs structure and a game plan. RTB is the structure King, absolutely a fit.
Our players often look lost and just run around like headless chickens the whole game.. apart from long bomb down the line and 10 metre side way chip, they have no idea or the confidence to do anything else..

Good teams play cohesive football and use simple ideas such as over lap runs or give and go handball to move the ball forward.. we don’t do any of that..there’s very little initiative to take the game on. it’s like we don’t really want to hold on to the ball (long bomb is basically a 50/50). Really frustrating to watch.. you end up with a team devoid of confidence or skills.

Think Lyon will change that.

Lethlean said that in the presser too. He had no involvement. Same in the Peter Ryan article posted somewhere on here previously.

I think the list he inherited is better than the list we have now for what it’s worth, but the right coach could definitely get more out of our current crop. Had we persisted with another 2 years of Ratts the likes of Marshall, Gresh & Battle get stuck in no man’s land and it’s back to a rebuild.
Hugely better list but all lists were better back then.

Jesus Christ. Some of the excuses for it not to be Ross 😂

Ultimately it is very simple.

Don’t even think about flags and grand finals.

An ELITE ENVIRONMENT.

That’s what the next coach needs to create.

Without that, you get none of the flags and success we crave.

Ross doesn’t have to come in and be our premiership coach. He needs to come in and sort the place out.

It could be the person who comes in after him that gets the success - and that’s okay and it doesn’t need to be a planned transition either.

Again I keep repeating myself. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT WE HAVE.

Is the list good enough?

What is the true deficiencies of it?

Is our recruitment shit or is it coaching? Both?

If it is good, just how good is it? Can we rectify it via free agency? Is it good enough with the core we have + increase our spending into the footy department?

The reason I’m hell bent on Lyon. Is because I know in 12 months time. We can answer all of these questions.

I’m not putting the expectation of him needing to be our next premiership coach.

My expectations are A football club I’m proud of. That is relevant. That doesn’t constantly let us down when the lights shine on us.

We don’t need to over complicate it and we don’t need to be sheeps in process nor decision because the league dictates it must be done this way or that or second or third time round coaches fail.

We are so far away from being relevant. Let’s start small and let’s bring someone in that can gives us answers and set expectations of us internally.

Poo! If it really is Ross they better set up properly around him. Not overly keen on this but here we go.

I also get lost in all the abbreviations. Can we please refer to Ross Lyon as Garry?

Yeah agreed. We get an untried new coach in and we have no idea what we're getting out of them, so we learn nothing about our list. But with RTB at least we know his deal, we know his style, if the list still looks shit after 12 months under him then we know it really is.

At this point in time I i feel moved to mourn the loss of RATTS....I am feeling optimistic about the possibilities of a new appointment but nonetheless 'The King is dead, Long live the King! applies to a degree.

Respect Brett RATTEN, that's what i feel. Although there is much I wished he had done during his tenure, there is something he has that many pretenders lack. He had it in spades. A truly warm hearted caring human being.....a man that I wish might have been the kind of father I would have loved.

Intuitively I felt 'here is a man who is not afraid to be compassionate, not afraid of his emotions, nor embarrassed by his devotion to others’ well being; here is a man willing to be present when the chips were down. Here is a man we can emulate!"

The reality that AFL Coaching might require even more in a strategic sense or in possessing the pragmatics of some ruthlessness does not lessen the great qualities he has.

Thanks RATTS for the great things you did give the boys and me as a supporter. Yes I did want a change but I don't under value the good things you possess.

A little bit of Shakespeare bastardised for the purpose but apt none the less

Friends, Saints, Forumites, lend me your ears;
I come to bury RATTEN, not to praise him.
The losses that he led live after him;
The good is oft interred with his bones;
So let it be with RATTEN. The noble BASSAT
Hath told you RATTEN was not ruthless:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath RATTEN answer’d it.
Here, under leave of BASSAT and the rest–
For BASSAT is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men–

Come I to speak of RATTEN's sackingl.
He was our friend, faithful and just to us:
But BASSAT says they bombed it long;
And BASSAT is an honourable man.

Hath RATTEN not brought many members home to Moorabbin
Whose fees did the general coffers fill:
Did this in RATTEN seem worth not noting?
How can we speak of RATTEN ill?
When that the poor SAINTERS cried, RATTEN hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
.
I speak not to disprove what BASSAT spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love RATTEN once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?

O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is at the kitchen table with RATTEN and the Mrs,
And I must pause till it come back to me.
Quite beautiful and apt.
In prose you captured how I feel.
Sad for him but actually relieved for the club.

Bassett was considerate and compassionate to the man and considered and deliberate with the decision that needed to be made and acted accordingly.

Cannot see the coaching selection process being any different. If Ross plays the game to Bassett's rules it is his job to lose.

But he does need a strong hand to keep him in line and I like the term an offensive coordinator.

Go hard after Selwood.

Anyway thank you for your comments probably the most sane commentary I have read in a 1000 posts.

Heard from two different, very good sources that it will be RTB who will take the gig with the idea of handing it on to a coach that is groomed under him. However one of the sources thinks this will be Hayes while the other thinks it’ll be another coach we bring in to fill out our coachin staff ie. new forwards coach.
Yze maybe 👀
This is juicy and think I could warm to this.

**** succession
He coaches now to win flags now
None of this I'll get it close and then someone else gets the chocolates

Sure if he falls short after 5 or so years then hand it on to lenny, but if hw comes in he is coming to win premiership and there is no talk of a succession plan

Imo
