So are we actually getting lyon? Any legit sources, at least by big footy standards (lol)? I haven't seen anything substantial in the media yet..
The information I received an hour or so before the story broke (and posted on this forum) was that an ‘emergency’ board meeting took place with an announcement on Ratten’s sacking imminent and that Ross Lyon would return.

I had a reason to believe the Ratten news even though it blew me away, it came from two different places. But the Lyon return only came from one. But they were spot on about the Ratten sacking before it was anywhere on here, Twitter or media.

Take from that what you will, but I’m taking it that Lyon is official.

For what it’s worth, which is not much at all, I’ve really come around to a Ross Lyon return.

Once we remove the emotion of the sacking of good guy Brett and once we remove the emotion of the terms of Lyon’s departure back in 2011, the move makes sense.

Lyon is direct, uncompromising, puts a rocket under any player and team but he’s not all negative, that’s a myth. He absolutely focuses on positives and makes players better. Ross Lyon teams have clear structure and strategy and ALL players but into team defence (or they don’t survive team selection).

The terms of his departure are irrelevant. I wasn’t happy at the time, but he did what was best for himself and it’s hard to blame him, as we have just seen coaching is a ruthless injury and this gave him stability and a chance to take another lost to a Grand Final.

He is an extraordinary coach. The no premiership thing is absolutely irrelevant. He gave his teams every chance and if a few things went his way he would be rated alongside Clarko.

He is an unquestionable upgrade. Our list profile has so many players ‘the right age’ but we lack the top end talent. Lyon’s arrival has the ability to take some players to that next level, but more importantly he will have all of those second tier players playing their role and buying into team defence.

Our inconsistency over the last couple of years has driven us all mad, and it happens partly because of execution/skills inside 50 but mostly, in my view, from breakdowns in team defence. One or two weak links mean the opposition play handball Chinese checkers and get easier kicks to work it forward.

Lyon is exactly what we need. It’s ok not to be happy with the way this sacking happened, I’m not either. It’s ok to still be annoyed with how the Lyon departure played out, I was too. But 11 years have passed. He is the best man for the job. He will give this list every opportunity to be as good as it can be, and if we do overachieve (which I think we can in 12-24 months under Lyon), then we become an attractive destination again for free agents to improve our top end.

I know we are pissed we went for De Goey, lost, didn’t get Bowes - remember we can pay 95% of the cap this season and then bank it to pay 105% in a future year. Lyon > improvement > top end free agent/s > have a crack and give ourselves a chance. We can dream.

Have to admit, having drunk the kool aide of Saints false dawn hopes since 2011, I was despondent on where we were going.

Was not one who thought Ratten was a terrible coach, when things went well we looked a good football team.

I argued that the extension felt right at the bye,m at 8-3, actually felt uneasy when actually signed at 8-6, but stuck with it.

Reasons for the unease. We we playing good football, coming from behind against top team and swamping them, the football we played was excellent and we looked mentally strong.
After the bye all that evaporated. The game v Essendon was appalling. OK so what do the coaches do about turning it around?
The answer was nothing. I said all through the second half of the season we were mentally weak and the inability to turn it around was silly on the coaches and its system.
Seems the review found the same and Ratten didn't have the tools to turn it around.
So after the season and during the trade period I felt despondent, the list was good but not a gf winning list and because we needed to go for youth we only went for FA.
I am not arrogant enough to think I understand intricate and ever changing game plans, but I could see there was no mental hard edge to the team.
Where were we going with this coach and structure? Well he was resigned for two years three months ago so he isn't going.

Basset calls for a review and I am sure it was assumed the coach wasn't part of it, so we might get a Rath or other faceless men getting boned.
First pinprick of light was Walsh stated we were seemed as irrelevant and he was right, but he was coming on board to change that.
So I felt down and felt the STKFC would be the same as it has been for a decade, a non entity.
This coupled with the FIXture, and the unfair playing field for getting quality players in made me feel we were setting up for years more of mediocrity until the inevitable 'rebuild' so in reality another decade of nothing.
The ruthless, brutal sacking by the board, coupled with Walsh, Hayes, and hopefully Lyon, coming on board has got me back on the kool aide, but unlike idiots like Purple, I didn't hear 'just words' that I had been fed since 2018, but direct action and substantial steps towards finals again and not another decade of wilderness and mediocrity.
The change is fundamental. It may not work but continuing down the same path was certainly not going to work.

So it is an upheaval but not as idiots have said, such a 'St Kilda thing to do'. No the St Kilda thing to do would be to bump along, irrelevant, and not a threat.

Was driving up to Melbourne yesterday with Bay FM on the radio. Lots of road noise and I had the volume down so couldn’t hear it all, but they started talking footy. Someone who sounded a bit like Bartel talking to some bloke in the studio.

Anyhow they were banging on about how great the Cats are and continue to be when the talk moved to St Kilda and the Ratten sacking.

They described the Saints situation as a “train wreck”.

As many have pointed out, this decision was desperately needed. That does not take away from it also being a bit sad or Ratten being a great bloke. However it followed an extensive no holds barred review and displayed swift action by the club. In addition there are already exciting hirings in place and we may well have played finals this year if we had’ve kicked straight.

Yet we are a train wreck?

So what then of teams below us such as Hawthorn (shifting on all their experience and facing an AFL enquiry into racism etc), Essendon (sack coach, hire and fire CEO, no finals wins in recent memory etc) and North (can’t win a game, lose GOAT, no current coach etc)?

If we are a train wreck then those people occupying high office at Mulgrave, Tullamarine and North Melbourne need to open the blinds and check for fast approaching airliners

Since it’s Rosses second stint with us I shall now refer to him as R2. Is everyone ok with that?

Apparently he "expecting" contact from the club this week so that's it - done and dusted!!!

But the again I'm "expecting" contact from the club this week as well because I've realised my credit card details are out of date so maybe I'm the one actually firming as the new coach.
If the trainee receptionist gets the phone numbers mixed up you could be our coach in a couple of weeks. Just remember to take all of the great advice on here.

It sounds like it. Several people have confirmed it to me, a few with good contacts in AFL. I'd be shocked if it wasn't going to happen now.

I remember speaking to a couple of business colleagues who worked at Collingwood FC back after they won the 2010 flag. Apparently in the reviews of the game over that summer, one of the points mentioned was that they were confident that they could exploit Lyon's game plan and strategies- worked pretty well.
So we should worry about that 11 years later!?

The sober Rod Butters made good points re Lyon.
No problem him coming back
Totally different set up
Totally different facilities
Totally different administration.
Reckon he was clear, concise, a very direct communicator and a very good person to have at the club.
Can you imagine the changes he will see re facilities compared to when he was last there?

On a different not, someone mentioned DMAC would be a Lyon favourite type. I reckon that would be spot on.
When did Butterss say that??

There's a lot of love in this thread tonight
First time in history the majority are in agreement ( and excited about) a decision the club has made ( Ratts) and potentially will make (Ross).

Just watched the presser now as I had to miss t live.

I thought they handled it very well and explained their thought processes clearly. If you do a review, it needs to be done thoroughly, with every facet of the club targeted. I like Basset, I think he’ll take no prisoners - and I 100% stand by the fact he admitted to making a mistake, but that to just leave it compounds the error.

Thought they explained the reasoning behind his mid year signing well, and I agreed with their thinking. They spent enough time with Ratts to see how/if he could improve - it was not just a fly by the seat of their pants decision.

Almost everyone on here appears to agree with this step, probably a first ever. I doubt that’ll be the case regarding the coach we hire.

Personally, I want an experienced, hard a*se of a coach - and if that’s Ross, Pyke or similar, I’m good with that.

He doesnt run the club. The Ceo and the board run theclub. The president is a representative on behalf of the supporters and members. Were lucky we have him. Hes an old animal enclosure supporter at moorabbin and a true saints fanatic. He wants another premiership and if it gets tough hes not just going to pack it in and become president of the local yacht club. And hes loaded of course with good contacts.

I haven't really given it a crack yet
😅🤣😆😇
