Autopsy Sydney Legacy in Grand Finals continues 10 goal loss to the Lions

This is it, I just wanted to be competitive, win or lose, but unfortunately we shat the bed once again

yep at least make Brisbane earn it like they did to the pies

Don't even know what to analyse, were barely competitive and didn't give ourselves a chance again. Top of the ladder seemed to be a good enough achievement for the group... allowed ourselves to become the hunted rather than playing like the hunter as we were early in the year. A competitive lose would've been stomachable....that was pathetic. Almost an exact repeat performance after a week of hearing how 'we're a different side now'.

Mental scars were on show early. Our defence shat the bed from the first minutes, even in the first when we were kind of in it their forwards had so much space. Blakey was horrible early, absolutely horrible as he was in 22.
We can't possibly win a flag without a stronger defence. All the KPD defenders on our list would be good No. 2's but desperately need a No.1, someone to build the thing around. Need a change of tactics at centre bounce, got the talent in there but too many walkouts are allowed.

Most of all though, we look mentally weak as hell. Don't know how you can fix that. Their kids showed more mental toughness than our senior players.
Optimism is low atm but history says getting flogged in a GF doesn't lead to a good follow up season....and even if we got back, don't know how the **** could you enjoy the next GF week or even just sitting top of the ladder in round 15.

All the 3 key forwards need big ****ing off seasons...one of them needs to be the 'guy' next year. Could make excuses for them this year.....but they'll have all played enough games and be at an age next year where there's no more excuses.

I hope more people will begin to agree with me when I say Horse needs to start giving a shit about clearances. He doesn't care about them as he wants to focus on the turnover game but in finals we get smashed in clearances and it makes it impossible for us to win.
Unfortunately clearances and contested ball in the middle is where finals footy is won. I look back to 2014 and was gobsmacked by the brutality Hawthorn came with. Talking to someone earlier and we both mentioned that in 10 years not much has changed.

They are an incredible club. Very successful. A great representation for a Vic Centric sport, but they’ve wasted some chances now. 2016 was unforgivable, but today was pretty much all on Sydney.

I wonder what the future holds? Shades of Geelong post the 95 loss? Lots of young players still, and always a redemption story, but perhaps like Chris Scott changed to win 2022 that Longmire needs to for 2025?

How a coaching panel lets them get 45 marks in a first quarter....

And how a playing group let themselves get out run and outworked on the outside so comprehensively....did the whole team get covid last week? They had an open man everywhere when possessing the ball, and in defense they outnumbered us at so many contests....that we just didn't work hard enough....is bizzare.

• 2013: lost Semi from 4 goals up at HT
• 2014: lost Prelim with +7 scoring shots
• 2015: missed the eight losing to 17th & 18th
• 2016: missed the eight
• 2017: lost home Elim to 8th
• 2018: missed the eight despite starting 11-4
• 2019: missed the eight featuring 86pt loss to a North outfit on the verge of oblivion
• 2020: lost home Prelim
• 2021: destroyed in home Prelim by chain gang of hotel prisoners running on fumes
• 2022: missed the eight
• 2023: swept in Showdowns and out in straight sets featuring fourth home final KO
• 2024: win 2/12 quarters across 3 games including worst ever losing margin for home team in a qualifying final

There’s some perspective.

I used to have an account in another name many moons go and took a break for a bit.

Early Sunday morning after the 2014 GF I created this account and here we are 10 years on almost to the day and we have another humiliation in a GF.

I'll admit because of the season we have had I was confident going into this game and a honourable close hard fought loss is acceptable but these aren't respectable losses they are noncompetitive thrashings.

People can talk about clearances, contested possessions, marks I50, kicking efficiency and any other metric they want to throw up,but what should be non-negotiable is effort, intensity, will and you don't continually lose GFs by 50 plus pts if you bring those.

I have no problem with people having a go at Longmire after today and previous embarrassments but don't let the players off lightly either, they are the ones tasked with performing on the big stage.

Hindsight can be a curse but our constant failings to develop a mindset/strategy to win 1st qtrs is perhaps indicative of why we constantly fail on GF day.....the inability to recognise and address clear and persistent failings.

I'll be back next year, as I'm sure pretty much all posters will be, but I can't imagine any of us will in any way be confident going into our next GF, whenever that may be.

And that is a really sad indictment on the coaches and players.

I think it hurts even more by the fact that there were some players we could have selected that might have helped. And they were 100% ready to go. Adams not even in the emergencies... what..?

I think the bridge has been burned there. Parker + Adams leaving... double whammy.

And we just hope that Sheldrick doesnt pack his bags for West Coast.

How the **** did we bring in Adams for this exact reason of playing him in the tough finals only to not play him and get. flogged in the centre. Grundy also had a huge day in the ruck and we still got belted in the centre. Can't have Florent Lloyd Roberts Mcinerney in the one back line

Our huge mistake. Adams would have been a big factor.
