What are we going to do next year without him?

The same as every other club does when a senior player retires.

It's not rocket science, E.C ! :)

FWIW Doughty is still playing reasonably well overall, but making an error or two per game that he wouldn't have made in yesteryear.

He's still good enough to hold his spot on current form, but this has to be his last year.

There's several players who'd like to have his spot, so he has to at least maintain his current form or he'll be doing a Johncock with South Adelaide.

Completely agree.

Is his current form that good? Did we lose anything last week? That was Browns first game and I don't think Doughty is producing more.

With all due respect, you can't compare Luke Browns game against GWS to Dogga's against WCE. ONe game was a one-sided training session against witches hats, the other against a team playing for its top 4 life (albeit with a lot of injuries). Dogga still has a place in this team and those after his spot have a ways to go to displace him

It's good enough to hold his spot, considerably better than any of those fighting to take it off him - and about 3000x better than you'll ever give him credit for.

Fine then, we'll drop Dogga this week and see how Brown goes against Geelong. That way we can compare.

You may think I'm biased against him, that's ok because I believe you are biased for him. So maybe you are giving him 3000x more credit than he deserves. Giving him credit for Smiths defensive work and blaming others when he concedes goals is a sure give away.

So without giving Brown the opportunity you've already ruled that he won't be as good. When teams introduce young players do they only pick them for the easy games and drop them for the tough games? Is that how Collingwood have done it?

Let's be honest, Doughty would need to have 5+ turnovers directly leading to goals to even make the selectors pause for a millisecond before selecting him the next week.

But let's say he gets injured...how would we structure up given finals are barely over a month away?

I doubt Brown would be trusted for the finals gig at this late stage. Ditto any even more left field options such as Tambling, Laird, Kerridge.

The only realistic defenders who can play on smalls that would be considered imo are Johncock, Smith or Shaw.

Johncock has queries on fitness and ability to tightly check an opponent which could prove costly come finals time. But he is a champion and the best BP we've ever had.

Smith is taller, faster yet can play smalls. His problems are defensive smarts and kicking accuracy over short distances (ala Doughty's only distance!). Love his potential but I'd prefer him further up the ground. Next 2 weeks will seal his fate either way.

Shaw has all the physical attributes. Would monster a small aerially, match them on leads, has uncanny judgement re when to zone off to be 3rd man up for a spoil, yet i don't believe his height precludes him from being good at ground level. Agile enough for the small forwards.

In the end, Shaw would be my pick to start in the BP against a small, with Johncock and Smith lurking in the 22 ready to provide cover if it all goes wrong.

It is purely my opinion that we need to be fielding our best available 22 for matches like this at this time of the season when we are battling for a top 2 position which, as you are surely aware, is vitally important in any finals campaign. I believe that Dogga IS in our best 22 and as such, deserves his place in the team. If I had to choose between Brown and Dogga (at this point in their respective careers) in a vital match such as this, then Dogga gets the gig all day every day.

Next year? Now that is an entirely different question.......

You see that's where we differ, I believe Doughty isn't in our best 22 and is only in there for reputation alone.
And that is your fundamental mistake. I don't think he's an outstanding player, but he's easily in our best 22 right now - and the selection panel obviously agree with me.

I'm no Doughty fan but yes, right now I'd pick him over Brown.

But what about Doughty vs Smith, Johncock or Shaw if that were the choice you were faced with?
On current form & fitness?
Doughty >> Smith >> Shaw >>>>>> Johncock

Brown would require at least two pages of > arrows to emphasise how far off the pace he really is.

Doughty did three vital excellent spoils in the third quarter when he was really needed. He is not going anywhere
Whoaaaaa!

Three spoils.

Well I didn't realise that.

Forget the Stevens 6 goal final which bought him another 3 seasons and a reputation as a "swing man"... we have our new Crowment: the Doughty 3 spoil quarter that could extend his career into 2015 at least.

Oh by the way, I was being sarcastic ;)

Dogga is pretty awesome and courageous at spoiling the ball for a little bloke.

For me it's get Stiffy fitter if that's the concern and he takes Doughtys spot. I'd prefer Smith more up the ground as he is a midfielder. Shaw should be the third tall but that's a tough one because Otten looked good on the weekend and would be great to see the old Andy Otten back. Shaw was pretty impressive up forward against GWS, is that an option?
