Would we be able to fit Hogan in our salary cap? He would command a fair bit
I get that you have to pay a % of your salary cap each year, which is stupid.

But surely if 10 years ago we could afford prime Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Cox, Embley, Fletcher, Hunter, Glass and Rowan Jones we can find a way to bring in some stars.

It could have been Grundy but it wouldn't have been. We had Cox and NicNat and had picked up Lycett two years previously, we wouldn't have used a top 20 pick on another ruck. Grundy slipped that far because other clubs didn't need a ruck or didn't want to put the years into developing a ruck, we would have been no different. The other guys around that pick haven't done enough for me to think they'd be a better option than Wellers. I'm happy with that trade.

I'm less happy with the Redden trade, mostly because we paid over the odds to get him out of his contract when we could have waited until this year and got him as a FA. He hasn't exactly shown that we needed him a year early.[/QUOTE]

WC identified a need and traded for that need.

Not you specifically FS - but I wonder about some on here. Criticise WC for not recognizing their weakness, then criticize them for trying to address them.

I'm willing to bet good money that Redden was playing injured most the year. You don't go from a 25-30 possession averaging AFL mid to someone who struggles to get 20 in the WAFL.

Reckon he'll be a completely different player next year and the trade won't look all that bad.

I agree, otherwise I'm starting to believe there is something wrong with our midfield structures (Priddis Thread) and tactics as quite a few players have struggled going through our midfield, mostly those who have come in from other clubs.

he had 2 surgeries at the start of the preseason. One is a hernia and thats pretty serious one that meant he missed nearly all of preseason. He was rushed back IMO and should have had an extended preseason and played a couple months of wafl before he returned to the seniors.

I see Brett Allison is leaving Melbourne, he's a development coach who's been under Paul Roos the last few years.
Also been at Sydney and North.

Reckon he'd be someone we'd be interested in? North connection...
He's only been at the dees since 2014, and they've certainly improved in that time.

North Melbourne Asst. Coach (Forwards) 2010-2013
Melbourne Head of Development 2014-

Brett Allison, Melbourne's head of development, was the first coach to join Melbourne following Paul Roos' appointment as senior coach.

Allison, who played in the 1996 and 1999 flags for the Kangaroos and was a member of the Sydney Swans' premiership coaching panel in 2005, came to the Demons after being an assistant coach at North Melbourne since 2010.
He was in charge of the forwards at the Roos in 2013.

Allison spent nine years as a development coach with the Swans, where he oversaw the AFL NSW/ACT program and later became the Sydney reserves team.

His experience as a development coach has given Brett experience in developing skill, tactical and strategic development of the first to third year players. His expertise also extends to kicking and he has a keen eye for future talent in recruiting.

I like much very.

When drafting wasn't enough they traded. When they traded they won premierships.

Exactly, drafting helps you possibly in 3-5 years time. Trading helps you now stay strong and being able to contend.
If the club now believes we cannot contend then by all means go to the draft. If not trade in and out players to get the best possible group together next year to contend for a premiership.

I think it was the fact you rated Lobb over Hogan.
I havnt seen huge amounts of either but i got the idea Hogan has a bit of an attitude problem and looks disinterested at times. We;ve got enough of that type of player.Lobb's marking, recovery kicking at goal and courage is fantastic.

I think this is a good point, just because you bring a player here does not mean they will perform the same. Coniglio for example I don't think would be the player he is at GWS for us, it has a lot to do who you play with and the game plan.

he has shown nothing in the last year or so and struggled to break into a poor side. if we had a decent midfield we could have taken a punt but we are not in that position. I don't see him breaking into our b22 either. I have more confidence in kids like duggan, nelson and parto coming on in the next 18 months. I mock hutchings at time and did state ah chee is upgrade on him but hutchings ability to tag has made him an asset now.
I think your logic is a bit backwards. In my view, it is worth taking a punt on a potentially undervalued players to build your midfield, especially when your midfield is struggling. Calculated low cost risks is not going to hurt much, refusing to delist players year after year of mediocrity that clogs your list.

If we turn over low cost players regularly, we will sooner or later find some unloved quality without necessarily clogging the list. We just need to be prepared to move them on quicker when it appears that it will not work out, rather than our current approach of flogging the dead horse, denying us the opportunity to find those low cost gems.

As for Ah Chee, I wouldn't mind giving him a short contract provided we can get him for next to nothing.

At GWS he's just a cog in the machine

Here he would be THE COG!

It's something that he only signed a 2 year deal (iirc). Obviously keeping his options open and hopefully might get back to us at the end of this contract. Probably wants to have a red hot crack at putting a couple of premierships up with GWS.

Pretty was an extension so he is there for 3 more years at least.

but ah chee isn't undervalued tho. IMO undervalued type are the JPK, O'rourke, anderson and depth types in good sides. Ah chee is deadset average layer that showed a bit 2 years ago.
Would rather a developing unknown than a proven mediocre player.
its more of a stop gap as most young KPP take time to develop. Could take a punt late on someone like brennan cox this year but he would probably take a couple of years to be ready for AFL. Someone like o'shea on a 1 or 2 year contract might not be too bad. I think bit like giles situation and his versatility is handy.

Fair enough. I think Hogan would cost more in terms of a trade but neither would come cheap.

If he couldn't make it at the bottom-dwelling Bombers, what makes you think he could make it with us?
Yeah fair point just looked like he had something different he's still young good rangey type with pace, liked what I saw of him last year maybe change of club and environment would do him good would prefer to rookie list someone like Edwards as opposed to Lucas (delisted now)
