Then what is the point of a stop gap Full Back like Tarrant? We have HEAPS more depth in the CHB/FB positions that our KPF stocks. Balta, Miller, Broad, Grimes, Biggy - Vloss is closer to a FPD than Caddy is a forward. Toby has shown far more form dropping"Back" than forward. We have also added Tarrant. Where is the argument here? Are Key backs more important than key forwards in the modern game ? I dont think so.

We have Jack, Tom & possibly Noah if we rob the backline of its best defender as our Key Forward depth. Thats it.

If we are going again, we need to learn from the mistakes of 2021, we need depth to carry us for 6 weeks incase Lynch or Jack get injured.

Tarrant is a proven performer not a failed reject.

Not sure pick 7 can be called speculative. Callaghan vs Hobbs/ Erasmus, and we lose 15 ... Sonsie/Goater/Roberts or next year's first. I'll back the club in, but prefer the odds of any two in that list to have more impact long term than one player.
That's my point. How do you know they're not speculative? Because you read mock drafts? The absoluteness of what we should/shouldn't do in a thread full of evey day Joe's is impressive.

A stop gap KPF is a waste of space. As I said the other day, if things go pear shaped and we need to turn to the likes of Ryan or Miller or a draftee or need to use Nankervis or Soldo as a KPF we're going to get more out of that, than turning to failed options from other teams.

Firstly if that happens then it's likely that we're not going to be a finals contender, so why shoot ourselves in the foot from a draft point of view by having a stop gap option helping us win a couple of extra games. Secondly by using the likes of Ryan or Miller or a draftee were getting development into them, which serves us better for the long term future than a stop gap spud will offer.

If the opposite happens and it all goes well, then the likes of Ryan and the draftee/s will get to be around a team that is contending which also helps their development because on the likelihood that they are called upon they are going to be playing in games where we're contending and that will help with their development again.

Stop gaps very rarely work, and to get them to even commit you need to offer up a multi year deal which means we're effectively stuck with them for 2 seasons. As it stands we have 7 open spots, with the plan being to take 5 kids in the draft, upgrade a couple of rookies and then redraft Nyoun and Cumberland, if we were to take a stop gap option, then it means we either don't take the 5 picks in the draft or we don't redraft one of Nyoun or Cumberland, who are both likely to only get 1 year rookie deals initially which means if they don't work out we can move on from them this time next year, rather than being tied to them for another 12 months.

At this stage of the year ~ the offseason~ thinking about our performance this year, I have limited expectation of an improved performance from our club. New coaching blood is encouraging, but one year extra on the planet will not assist our 30 y.o. brigade. So I'm happy to draft in as much talent as possible this year.

Isn't that the point of a fan forum though - if you can't here - where can you?

Haha..yes WE are speculating, but you can be sure the list management team have done their homework. My point is their knowledge being what it is makes picks 7 & 15 'safeish' and assuming we take a mid at 7, I feel there is a very good chance he'll be around the Callaghan mark, and more importantly, the combined of the two picks far outweighs. But some here are suggesting we wouldn't need to even use 15, so there is another argument all the Joe's can expertly state on here for another month.

Mr. Magic I believe is working on a trade that involves 4 clubs and next year's 1sts & 2nds.

We need a trade where we end up with picks 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Forgetting about 2, but it is not going to be easy and will need to involve a number of clubs

Tarrant is AA quality and was available for nothing - he is not stop-gap, he’s our best KPD. If we could get Tomahawk for 2-years of course you would as he might help you win a flag, but last time I checked there were not any decent KPF’s available to bring in.

Based on what you know of who is available, who are you suggesting we bring in for this depth you refer to? If there’s no-one of half decent quality available….. well….. I guess that means there’s no-one of half decent quality available …….

But in the group only Bolton looks like a consistent match winner, and only Balta, RCD and Stack have the ability to reach that elite level of player and it’s only potential.
I absolutely get your point and agree that chances to get match winners are what you need to go for, as the B grade talent you can pick up from anywhere while the match winners you gotta draft or pay big.

But it is funny that our match winner that you mentioned was drafted at pick #29. #1 and #5 would close to guarantee a star player, but our 5 picks also have a good chance with good drafting.
