12 and 19 for just tarranto ? G A G F

In what’s regarded as a weak draft that’s a very fair trade. Here is all the picks we’ve taken between 12 and 21 (19 will extend to 21) over the last 15-years:

Rance (18)
Griffiths (19)
B. Ellis (15)
Lennon (12)
Corey Ellis (12)
D Rioli (15)
Higgins (17)
CCJ (20)
RCD (20)
Dow (21)
T Brown (17)

So the only player superior to Taranto is Rance. The only other player even in the conversation with TT otherwise is Rioli.

In fact looking at the 60 x draftees taken 12-21 over the years of 2014-2019 (enough time to gauge how good they are), there are only about 6
in the conversation with being as good as TT. And you could argue TT is better than most of these 6:

Lever (14 in 2014)
C Curnow (12 in 2015)
English (19 in 2016)
Bailey (15 in 2017)
Butters (12 in 2018)
S De Koning (19 in 2019)

So our chance of getting even 1 x player as good as TT with picks 12 and 19 is very remote based on draft history.

And you should see some of the absolute spuds taken in those 60 x picks …. Wowee …. Just horrific.

Like Norf had us over a barrel with CCJ out of contract and threat of PSD.

The best clubs keep proving over and over again it’s not about winning trades (especially in the eyes of the general public and media), it’s about satisfying everyone. I would assume Taranto and Hopper want GWS adequately compensated, just as CCJ wanted us compensated.

And next time a player we want is available they’ll know we will get the deal done unlike say a Dodoro.
Yep, well aware giving Geelong any form of credit is frowned upon around here but they’ve been getting deals done that work for both sides and not try to make it a win/lose situation, same with Sydney. Getting a reputation like this works as well when players are looking to move, their managers know which clubs will get the job done and advise players that direction as well.
We are starting to reach that level as well, Taranto and Hopper choosing us no doubt was partly motivated because they know we will get the deal done

Big overpay if this is correct.

Taranto is not worth two first round picks.

Hooper for 30 and future first is also an overpay.

Let's hope it guarantees us another flag as it wouldn't matter then but geez...

With father-sons (not sure on academy picks) etc… it’s 13 and 21. So it’s a mid first round and an end of first round. Let’s put it this way … it’s pick 12 and Coleman Jones.

12, 19, 30 and a F1 for both those guys is pretty reasonable. If we can get back a F3 in a strong draft next year we’ve done well.

That might be what they're worth given age and talent but it lacks the context of why they're leaving. There is a reason why both players are being allowed to leave GWS and it boils down to them not being able to offer them then contracts they deserve given they already have Cogs, Whitfield and Kelly on 1m or thereabouts each, pay another 1.5m on Hopper and Tarranto and thats 4.5m or thereabouts on 5 players.
GWS wanted to keep TT. Offered him a 2 year contract to see him to free agency and a bigger 4 year contract as well. He decided to leave, and wasn’t pushed out.

I’m all for trading the right way and being amicable but there is a time to dig you heals in.
We did that with Higgins and CCJ, we did not with Geelong when they picked up Holmes, we should of forced a second too since they were so keen.
I’m not going to judge the latest reports until it’s done either as I’m expecting GWS to give us some throw away current and future thirds, maybe a late second.

Huh? We didn’t dig our heels in with Higgins. It was a 2nd rounder and an upgrade from 21 to 17
for a player in contract. We helped facilitate his move for opportunity.

As for Holmes …. he was not on anyone’s radar at that pick. There was obviously no-one else left we really liked so we gave over the pick. Made perfect sense.

Not sure how much Adelaide benefitted getting picks 11 and 30 and Dean Gore (never played an AFL game) for Dangerfield or how much Carlton benefitted from getting an 8 pick upgrade and Billie Smedths for Zac Touhy. West Coast spent picks 14, 24, 33 and a future first for Tim Kelly. Geelong gave up picks 15,18,25 for Cameron and picks 32 and 35.

He saw how much the rest of his team mates were getting paid and said thats my price. GWS didn't come to the party and he decided to looks elsewhere. If GWS really wanted to keep him they would have offered him the deal we did but they know they can't afford that. That gives some leverage in our negotiations as does his contract status along with how they have been using him this season.

It's all starting to kick off now. Thank God this trade period is going to be better than the last one. Nathan Kruger to Collingwood was dominating the news.

Horne wants out..... #lolNorf

Oh my …. last year Tigers offered 7 (Gibcus) 15 (Brown) 26 (Sonsie) and Coleman Jones for Pick #1.

Although Norf are a rabble, JHF does look like a bit of an entitled bogan……

Norf have gone from their happiest days in a decade with Clarko announced as coach to almost their lowest ever ebb with Clarko standing down and their big white hope JHF wanting out … what a schemozzle!
