Given it's likely Cotchin & Riewoldt's last season do you think we'd be into Anderson & Ben King from the Gold Coast?

We must have some cap room even Grimes imo would be lucky to go on again, I could see him pulling the pin given how much he has declined.

Tarrant's body also looks cooked listed as indefinite still.
The Suns are going no where anyone can see that.

Won’t get either. Anderson has resigned (or will) and King will be too expensive

I think he’s a space invader, a poor man’s Richo. Doesn’t bring his team mates into the game, tries to take all the marks and mostly muffs them . Not good enough to tie JRs bootlaces…
hahahaha now I've heard it all... Naughton's no good, because... as KPF he tries to take all the marks... you know, his job! And the ones he muffs, come to ground (rather than be outmarked) and brings their smalls into the game.

If he could kick straight he would be one of the best KPF in the game, if he's not already

Why? Tarrant, Cotchin and Riewoldt will all be finished. Grimes looked cooked. Miller and Biggie are average at best. Young looks promising.

Gibcus should take over from Jack as CHF if we were able to snag McKay.

Really ?? Our backline is absolutely fine for many, many years:

Balta
Gibcus
Young
D Rioli
Vlastuin
Baker
Short
Broad (2-3 more quality years if he stays)
Brown (first round pick so fingers crossed)

KPD back-up with Miller and Biggy

Why so much illogical panic about trading some first rounders for TT and Hopper?

Most of our best youngsters and most promising players were picked 20+, rookie picks or pre-season draft:

Balta, Bolton, Sonsie, Clarke, Baker, Ralphsmith, Ryan, T Young.

The ‘panic’ in trading some good picks for TT and Hopper like we’ve ruined any chance of getting quality youngsters is just illogical based on what we’ve done in the recent past.

Its almost like people believe a 1st round pick is a guaranteed Dusty , Cotch , Jack or Rance
as we all know they most likely are not and even if you have a top 5 pick you would stlll need a lot of luck to get 1 of them

I remember reading somewhere that picks outside the top 10 had like 10% chance of making it to 150 games or something like that
(if anybody is good with searching would be great to post here)

The way i see it in Taranto & Hopper we are getting 2 x 150 game players these 2 guys are going to not only help us for the now and keep Richmond competitive on field but also assist us with setting standards and examples for the young kids that are there now and will come in the next 6-7 years when
Cotchin , Riewoldt , Martin , grimes , Tarrant , Nank , Lynch are gone and help bring the kids along the journey

Exactly. Hopper and Taranto aren’t stopping the rebuild. They ARE the rebuild.

I just have no confidence in picks #10 -#20 being any better than say a pick at #20-#30

Sure you will get the occasional super star - But who knows which player it is ? Why wasnt he selected inside pick 10
what makes us think we would have selected the right player (with our track record most likely not)

JON - Tambling - Lennon - Conca - Cellis - RCD - Dow - Vickery just to name a few

maybe im just scarred

Yeah I hear ya. But our forward line could also be absolutely fine for many, many years if Gibcus becomes a CHF:

Ryan
Gibcus
Cumberland
Bolton
MRJ
Clarke
Campbell

Bradtke and Bauer possibly too....

Our problem is the high number of retirements this year and next. This year could be Grimes, cotchin, Jack, tarrant. They would be replaced right now by a rd 2, 3, 4 and 5 draft pick. So we are dropping in quality. If Broady goes he brings in a draft pick. And we still have castagnas spot. Hope our scouts are working well. We may need to get one free agent in if we can and all those draft picks would be roll of the dice

To me draft picks are an over rated commodity. Way to much is put on it

And all this was and would have been considered. That’s why 2 experienced players that have already made it becomes important

I did some stats a few months back but can’t find them… but what they showed in regards to ‘games played’ was:

1. Pick 1-10 are clearly superior to 10 and beyond.

2. There was negligible difference between 10-20 and 20-30.

3. Later in the draft picks 40-50 were superior overall to 30-40.

In other words, if you’re not getting into the real pointy end of the draft, anything 10-30 is much of a muchness - probably why we were happy with 28/29/30 …. which is looking bloody good with Sonsie, Clarke and Banks!

Then around those picks there’s:

Edwards: #26
Rance: #18
Astbury: #35
Macca: #31
Bolton #29
Balta: #25

Fails:

Conca : #6
Lennon: #12
Vickery: #8
Ellis: #12

This is why trading picks 12/19 and a future first (hopefully 10+) for Hopper is not looked upon as a big deal, as history says outside the top-10 it’s very much a lottery from 10-30. And then 40-50 are no different to 30-40.

Why do we think GWS packaged up a heap of top picks to get #1 ??

Once again …. as if the club hasn’t analysed this to within an inch of its life before making these trades for TT and Hopper.

Yep thats exactly what i remembered and a good indication of the reasoning why picks 1-5 are valued so highly
Lets just also remember that trade offer we had made to get JHF & Fin Callaghan something like CCJ + Gibcus pick + Sonsie pick

We also had similar comments when Prestia joined the club - I dont believe anybody regrets missing out on scrimshaw now
