He marks the footy really well in teh VFL from what I have seen, and was ok in his first few games at AFL.

I think a combination of fatigue, and self doubt/low confidence at the top level may have got the better of him towards the end of the season. But that happens with most players the year they get a real crack in the seniors, no matter how old they are.

I think another year, confidence hopefully from the new coach, stacks of opportunity on the field, Lynch and kozi taking the main defenders up forward, might just be the set up he needs to really come on this year

Seriously, when he starts taking those grabs, his confidence will go through the roof & so will he as a player.

On Soldo, Port can offer the guaranteed #1 spot, we can't. He probably knows deep down as well that once Ryan breaks out his game time will be even more limited than it already was.

we need proven small goalkickers,elite campaigners ,we have one of the best if not the best in Daniel,he makes booby hill look pedestrian
lookin fwd to seeing booby play off HB next season for the filth collecting his 22-23,why wouldnt he McCrea pull the move,Dimma did
and look what its netted us in the last 3 seasons so now,right now theres 3 maybe 4 players left on the entire list with a blade of fwd ability & Daniel & Lunch r 2 of them
that doesnt include goat n shai as theyre required in our midfield almost FT as our midfield is as slow as treacle
anyway my stance remains,DRioli starts FWD bc hes an elite small fwd,any muppet can run around HB racking up #'s,just look @ NDaicos,in his defence tho at least he drifts down for the odd goal

Rioli is unlucky not to a AA half back. what we do need up fwd is Clarke/Rioli jr/Cumberland to step up & take those roles & make them their own. all of those spots up fwd are up for grabs.

That should help him to start taking more of those contested marks he should take.

Ryan often wasn’t even trying to mark he was just bringing the ball to ground, more size and experience should give him the confidence to back himself in to go for marks

Orazio Fantasia has committed to Carlton. Not sure if that's a good thing for them or a waste of a list spot given how injury prone he has been since heading to Port a few years ago.

Gawn got on a roll and destroyed us. But this doesn't really diminish what Soldo showed in that match. There is a reason Port have coughed up good draft capital for him, and no doubt a decent contract. He is a man mountain at his physical peak who has been in the system for 10 years and despite some difficulties isn't as battered as most rucks of his age and quality. We have definitely lost a good player, it is just a matter of whether the other factors, his contract saving, and draft picks received are of more value to us than Ivan himself. Having a ruck like him in reserve was an huge and valuable luxury for us, sadly we didn't have him in reserve as often as we'd have liked when Nankervis was unavailable due to Soldo himself being injured.

We lost a good player with a lot of potential. If Soldo could of got back to 2019 he will be very damaging.

On the Melbourne game, Samson did well against Gawn and Grundy until he got real tired. I think it is important to remember how well Ryan did in that little patch of form.

I think Yze will play Noah as 2nd ruck/ forward
In my humble opinion his best position

i dont have an issue with Balta as a player,i agree with you he is versatile,my gripe is we have FA small dangerous FWDS,we're cooked again if we get donuts from our so-called smalls,thats the best description i can apply to our smalls bc the best one we have on the list is wasting oxygen running off HB,time to put him we're hes most dangerous @ the feet of lunch n Kosi n wots also forgotten bout Daniel is he more than a capable lead up,proven 3 x premiership small fwd whom came @ pick 15,lets not dream (not you) lets not dream we're gonna win a flag by plugging our fwd line with late 3rd's & early 4ths,mid season hail marys and rookies,it aint gonna wash

Soldo was nearly 10 ranking points ahead of Gawn from less game time when he went to the bench for the final time in the 4Q. He certainly didn't have any control over what Gawn scored after that point rucking against Miller/Pickett/Balta as he went on to win them the game while Soldo sat on the pine.

Not one thing you've written begins to disprove the fact that the last game Soldo played as a #1 ruck, against a player ranked top-3 if not #1 ruck in the game, his match rating was at the very high end of elite.

Somehow, I don't expect you'll do any better at your third crack.

Gawn was a clear BOG with about 10 second half clearances from memory. Not saying it was Soldo’s fault, but they are the facts of that game.

In regards to player ratings, you probably should be careful taking a single game to make any decisions. Here is his player ranking amongst just Rucks each season:

2023: 20th (Nank was 11th)
2022: 45th (out of 49… Nank was 12th)
2020: 24th (Nank was 8th)
2019 : 21st (Nank was 33rd)

So one-off games are great. But his body of work hasn’t screamed ‘elite’.

So even when sharing ruck duties with Soldo, Nank was able to rate top-12. Soldo couldn’t rate top-20.

So if given the choice of which ruck to keep, Nank wins pretty handily based on player ratings.

Being a more establish afl player, and having a forward craft, I reckon he would go close to kicking 35-40 in a season. That and causing a lot of issues for backman.
Like to see him switch there every now and then.

From memory GC gave up what ended up being pick 11 to Geelong for the pick they used to take Sharp and now he’s been delisted

I understand all clubs make mistakes but the way that club is run is complete shambles

Yep, it’s like Geelong have had a mole in the GC list management team for a few years …. this Sharp deal looked horrendous when it happened and it’s turned out worse than anyone could imagine. Then there’s the gifting of pick-7 with Jack Bowes to the Cats. At least we know with Dimma as coach the GC charity to the Cats ends immediately.

Whistle sounds at 2:00 for the mark, he does a hurry up double whistle as 1.33, he then calls play on at 1:30. We can argue but the umpire followed the rules and Balta needed more awareness then.

Whether they call it other times can be argued, but in this instance that's 100% on Noah.

There’s the world’s biggest numbers on the scoreboard showing the friggin clock. If anyone is trying to give Balta an out for that give up now, it was epically stupid.

Player ratings are credible to an extent, and yes Soldo had a decent first half, but the eye test wins out and Gawn murdered us in the second half. He himself admitted he was flat in the first half and got a rocket from Goodwin. End of the day he and Petty were the difference

Miller got subbed off too I think. Left Young & Balta. But went forward, Coulthard debuted. JVR, Petty Melksham kicked them 20 goals.

Soldo was good. Good enough to be 1st ruck. I'm glad he took his opportunity in South Aust
