I thought this whole discussion was around the grumpy little Swedish kid saying exactly that?

I haven’t actually read anything posted by anyone on the subject and I won’t.
She didn’t, she gave stats and odds as given to her by the scientists.
Telling them to start the changes, those that they agreed were an issue until Trump.
And called them out for pretending there isn’t an issue.

I would prefer Greta thunberg as the millenial on our board than holly ransom.
Greta's maiden speech at her first PAFC board meeting:

"You have stolen my dreams with your empty words. We are in the beginning of a massive premiership drought and all you can talk about is fairy tales of eternal coaching stability. HOW DARE YOU!"

Janus do you reckon aliens drip feed advanced technologies to the Americans & the Russians to just see how long we take to destroy ourselves, the alien interest in nuclear weapons testing facilities can't be denied either.

It’s funny you mention this - I just started looking into stuff which claims that aliens/demons/angels are all the same thing and they are inter dimensional beings that are always around us, but they are on a different phase than us...so they can’t interact with us physically, but only mentally/emotionally...and that nuclear explosions have the ability to knock them into this dimension. Which was what the Roswell crash was all about (due to nuclear testing in New Mexico).

Most UFO “abductions” are actually paranormal experiences that most people don’t have the spiritual vocabulary to give proper elocution, so they break it down into scientific “experiments” instead, because it’s a way to introduce logic to something their spiritually primitive brain can’t possibly handle.

See my post above your's re: Twin Peaks Ep 8. Spooky.

I prefer them with the dubs, or is that racist?

That is very wrong but also hilarious. Lost it at the Dan Bilzerian comment.

Might have to watch that later.

Like not when the kids are in the car.

I'm sure Pacific Island teens whose entire way of life is threatened by rising seas are really glad to know they've all just been had by #projectfear. Can someone phone the Prime Minister of Kiribati and let him know that Forzaport reckons talking about sea level rise is child abuse pls :drunk:

This is the exact type of hysteria I'm referring to. It's all fear mongering. They don't tell you about the pacific islands that increase in land mass, only the minority of islands that decrease. Kiribati is most likely increasing in land mass on balance.

You can dislike my post all you like, it doesn’t make it any less true.

yes it does janus, because it's factually incorrect. you are correct that we are already locked in to some degree of global warming (it's already happening) which will have flow on effects re: rising sea levels which will take decades/centuries.

HOWEVER, we are still at a turning point where we can affect whether we're looking at somewhere in the realm of 2-2.5 degrees by 2100 (which is very very bad), versus 3-4 (which is absolutely catastrophic)

What don't I have any idea about?
a) That I don't believe that 'the planet is going suffer a horrific mass extinction within the next 12 years' (as a result of climate change); or
b) Terrifying children by teaching them that the above is a certainty to happen is a bad thing; or
c) That terrifying children could not be considered child abuse; or
d) all of the above

I'm actually open to listening to (ie reading) your thoughts and argument to support your hypothesis that I have 'no idea'. You may indeed be correct.

c) is just bizarre so i'll ignore that one a bit. children now are the ones facing these challenges in the future when the boomers are long dead. they're being made aware of the facts and are ****ing angry which is very very understandable. i'm angry too.

a) this is obvious (i think), but global weather systems, ecosystems, microclimates etc are extremely complex beasts. species are not able to evolve at the rate of change they are currently presented with. of course, big climate changes occur as we go in and out of ice ages and on geological time scales there are massive changes. geological time scales are irrelevant as humans have been on this planet for a ****teenth of those timeframes. the changes that occur during ice ages are significant, but the RATE OF CHANGE is much slower than the current anthropogenic influenced warming. our ecosystems simply cannot cope. even if you don't put any inherent value on nature, a mass extinction event has terrible consequences on human existence as we depend on life around us.
putting all this aside, there's the tipping point argument that the more quickly we **** things, the more things get ****ed. the melting of the entire greenland ice sheet, for instance, equates to around 7m of sea level rise. sea level rise isn't uniform across the globe but it doesn't take a genius to note that most of our civilisations are based on the coast. as usual it will be the poor who get screwed over the month and billions of climate refugees fleeing flooded cities isn't a good thing.
this is not some far fetched dystopian idea, this is what years of research is telling us. depression and anxiety in climate scientists is very high because they are faced with these facts and those in power simply are not listening. on some measures, we are actually tracking WORSE than the IPCC worst case scenarios from a decade ago.

b) children are being educated on facts. this is what WILL HAPPEN. yes it's a bad thing. family values used to be a (claimed) right wing value, but they are completely failing at the concept of intergenerational equity. our children and grandkids are facing a planet where events like the black saturday bushfires, tasmanian world heritage wilderness burning, mass coral bleaching, decade long droughts and frequent hurricanes are the new normal

There's absolutely zero doubt that lifestyles of the past were far more sustainable overall.

no argument. globalisation has brought us cheap electronics, cars and toys.

the cost has been the loss of local manufacturing, massive environmental externalities (ignored), and our mental health.

The effects of climate change attributable to humans have been wildly exaggerated. It doesn’t mean we don’t seek to become carbon neutral and encourage other countries to do the same but it does mean we don’t put the fear of death into our kids.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TOPIC?

this is not debatable science. for someone who argues so fervently the merits of nuclear power, i would have thought you'd entertain a global consensus. do you have a degree in atmospheric physics?

why would you assume you know better than, for example, NASA?

would you argue with a doctor administering a vaccine to your child to prevent disease?

So who's looking forward to Metallica?

I happen to know a little bit about multi-variate analysis and complex systems.

The idea that the science is settled and infallible is terribly flawed. That would suggest no further study is needed, which is nonsensical.

The alarmist nonsense comes mainly from climate projections. Climate modeling can't accurately predict global temperatures 3 years from now, there's no chance any 80+ year predictions have any validity at all. It's just not possible to accurately predict all the variables in a complex system that we still don't understand. Even historical analysis of temperatures is unreliable, just look at the Michael Mann fiasco. It's actually difficult finding proper critical analysis of either side of the climate debate, instead we're left with arguments presented in silos.
