I don't know, but maybe the coaches have a pretty good idea about the players, cause it's not all that often we are made to look silly by delisting a player who goes on to excel at another club
Andrew Carrazzo is the only really big miss (on games played, at least) for us here. Delisted without making a senior appearance at Geelong, and went on to play 194 games at the Blues. Won their B&F in 2007 as well.

Good example. Debatebale if he was a miss. Dominated at Oakleigh, dominated at VFL, would have he ever played above anyone in our midfield during that era? He would definitely be in our team now. Ultimately an AFL standard player but you wouldn't curse yourself too much for missing him.

Can we blame Thompson for that one?

In general though, I’d suggest that there’s very few players that we’ve willingly let leave, trade, delist etc, where it’s come back to hurt. What has hurt is the players we’ve put contracts in front off or been hesitant to trade that seem to hurt more

I tend to agree. Which is why I said he was only demonstrably a miss on games played. When you look at our 2007 premiership team (the same year he won the B&F at the Blues), there's not a lot of names that you'd even consider omitting to fit him in.

This is evidence based which I like. You can now compare Atkins VFL career with Hardie's brief VFL career and give an informed opinion. I am across Hardie's games this year including his numbers and can see he compares favourably with Atkins. Like Atkins Hardie will be a shoe in for the Geelong VFL b&f and is currently leading the VFL MVP voting. Atkins tackle numbers were impressive and well ahead of Hardie but Hardie has him covered in other areas, disposals and clearances. Not that Atkins is a particularly good yardstick this year, I think he is struggling to have an impact.
As evidence for future consideration. In contrast to the stats, I don't think Hardie will make it. Now if he does, my statements on big footy can be evidence as to why you should give my opinion no regard and think I'm a flog. If his career goes nowhere then you can still think I'm flog and it's still up to you if you give my opinion any regard but it will at least provide some evidence on whether my opinions any good or not.

What about Merv Hughes !!

Cats sent him a formal invitation , did a pre season with us , then promptly told him he was no good , so he turned his eye to cricket and the rest is history

Joel Hamling as well

I also think Hardie is a low chance making it. I also think he should get his shot.

I think you may be exaggerating the criticism here. People have just asked what afl attributes he has. He seems like he's ok at everything without being outstanding.

Yes he's getting his hands on it a fair bit at this level, but Bruhn is crucified by some for his low disposals and his only VFL game for us he got 36 disposals for a side that got smashed by 55 points.

Hardie only registered more than that this last week for the first time and that was in a win against a side with 3 wins to this point and looking shaky. Only his 3rd game with more than 30 from 17 matches, none of which we lost.

I think you probably have to find a game for him soon, but I don't expect he's going to answer any questions for us.

I appreciate the discussion from both camps. I've been squarely in the "give Hardie a go" for the past few weeks, both in terms of his performance and the struggles we've had in the midfield.

However, there has to be a reason he's not been giving a game. It's not his age - we haven't (and won't) go full "play the kids". cats_09 made some interesting comments on the weekend about his defensive running, so maybe it's something like that? You don't see that kind of thing watching the TV.

I still think he's worth trying - even a couple of games - just to see him at AFL level would surely give the coaches a better perspective on what he's capable of? But to be honest, our selection for the last week has been a little haphazard (notwithstanding injuries).

In the NBA there are stars of the competition who have zero defensive running/pressure but make up for it with the rest of their game. Luka Doncic for example. A starting 5 will usually have a couple of players who have good defensive skills. I'm not so sure the same is not true in AFL.

That's true - maybe he could do a Mitchell-like role for us? For full context, I noticed Mitchell averaged 6 tackles last year (FWIW) and Hardie's been averaging 4 in the VFL.

But again, it's hard to say one way or the other. He's getting coach votes pretty much every week, so he's performing at least some level (though there's been debate on this too).

To be honest, I don't see any stand-out traits from watching him but he knows how to get the ball and can kick the odd goal (5.8 for the year so far, so probably should've kicked a couple more?) so I'd be interested to see him get a run at senior level.

My view is Hardie might not make it, but let's actually play him and see. Some people are acting like we shouldn't give players a debut if they're not guaranteed to play 200 games for us. But if players like Cooper Whyte, Michael Luxford, Jordan Schroder, Jackson Sheringham, George Burbury have been given at least one opportunity (and in most of those cases more than one) at AFL level, for me Hardie also deserves a shot.

Would be interested to see how that midfield would go against the one we're currently running with in the AFL....

Furphy's first game of football since he was a young lad I believe. Under 14s football straight into the VFL is always a funny thought.

Also someone screwed up the formatting. J.Pike is obviously 23rd and emergencies start from A. Kuol mun

Well Atkins is a better version of Parfitt and Holmes and Bruhn are a lot, lot better than Hardie and Stevens. The only competitive position would be ruck with Conway vs Stanley so I'd say the AFL midfield would be pretty dominant.

Outside of Holmes they are all currently VFL level players

If Hardie continues his form and continues not to be picked for AFL (with a struggling AFL midfield) it is a very bad signal to potential draftees - might just decline approaches by the Cats for better chance, particularly at more struggling clubs -or simply to stay in home league (eg. SAFL) . Kind of says - ‘even if you start to excel at VFL level, we’re only ever going to pick you for AFL as an absolute last resort’. As indicated by Catters, at least Whyte, Burbury etc got a game where they could have a taste and potentially show something.
