Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

Hey all,

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Interesting to see the state of Russia's national wealth fund in September, Last report in Sept 2023:

Took a massive hit to keep the Ukraine war going.

Putin also used gold reserves to fund Iranian military equipment purchases. Who knows how he is funding military purchases from North Korea.

'We’re not picking targets autonomously, because that is a whole new set of ethical considerations,”

To dispense with that human guidance, you need a drone with electronic eyes sharp enough, and a digital brain smart enough, to distinguish the designated target from the background clutter and home in on it autonomously. But while computers have gotten pretty good at identifying static images of cute kittens, puppies and consumer products, they have a harder time with three-dimensional objects, especially when they’re camouflaged, partially hidden behind cover, poorly lit, or moving.

The real "ethical" consideration is the inability at present indentify targets. I expect sea drones will be the first to be impowered to choose targets, no background clutter. Declare a part of the black sea a free fire zone, warning non combatants to keep out and have sea drones target any ship like thing.

Yes, I expect you are right. Maritime domain is much easier for the reasons you say. A lot of the sophisticated anti-ship missiles already 'choose' their own targets using visual, radar or thermal pattern matching. It's generally been an expensive feature. With accurate pattern recognition algorithms becoming available on low end hardware I expect it will become universal. Those little boats Ukraine uses would be perfect for it.

Probaly with oil and gas that they now wont be able to sell on the open market.

In other words Trumps plan is the same as Putins, and also the same plan that any imbecile could have come up with.

Yet the simpleton in Trump thinks its ground breaking.
The best thing that Trump has come up with in this election is to reduce company tax and raise tariffs on overseas produced goods.
Oh, and set up concentration camps for non-Americans

MTG came up with zero income tax for the every day person in a masterful piece of political planning.

Cross-posting this from the NMFC politics thread (which is back open, and where I'm fighting a one-man insuregency against the little Pro-Putin clique that resides there);

Speaking of SCO, this was noteable;

China's President Xi was personally greeted on the tarmac by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the foot of the airplane. This included lots of pomp and ceremony, and the exchanging of flowers etc.

Later in the day, Russian President Putin was greeted "only" by the Kazakh Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov, with no ceremony. Russian embassy staff lined the tarmac to make it look a little less empty, apparently.

A stark indicator of the loss of diplomatic standing that Putin has experienced since invading Ukraine.

Compare the pair:

As long as you keep them confined there, Chadwiko, we're all appreciative.

Very good interview with many pertinent things said.

The one that stuck out was why is Putin all of a sudden talking about ceasefires? If the war was going well then he would not give a shit and keep on going mercilessly. The fact he is talking about it means its going balls up and he is feeling some pressure, not because he’s a great guy.

Putin banging on every 10 seconds about being deceived by the west. [K1 TG]

Putin complained about the deception of the West for the eighth time since the beginning of the year and refused to cease fire without negotiations

Russia will not stop the fighting in Ukraine, expecting that Kyiv will meet halfway and agree to peace negotiations. Moscow needs unbreakable guarantees that it will not be deceived, as has happened more than once, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference following the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

We need to ensure that the other side agrees to take steps that are irreversible and acceptable to Russia. A ceasefire without reaching such agreements is impossible
- Putin emphasized (quote from Interfax).

He recalled that Russia had already taken similar steps towards Ukraine at the request of Western partners - for example, it withdrew troops from Kyiv in March 2022 to show its readiness to sign a peace agreement.

We did this and again faced deception: all the agreements reached in Istanbul were thrown into the trash. And this happened many times
- Putin emphasized.

This year, Putin spoke about the deception of the West: January 26, February 9, March 13, 28, May 17, June 5 and 14.

He broke last year's record. In 2023, Putin complained seven times that Russia had been “cheated.” This happened on January 18, February 21, March 14, May 30, June 13, July 8, September 4.

Note the narrative continues that RF's expulsion from it's Kyiv vector in 2022 was a goodwill gesture: "... it withdrew troops from Kyiv in March 2022 to show its readiness to sign a peace agreement"
