Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

Remove this Banner Ad

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Been watching the FPV drone footage over the last day. Unbelievable what you can get on YouTube.

Literally see the faces of people a millisecond before they have it blown off.
It's mind-boggling how much this technology has grown, a lot of that growth during (because of?) this war!
When the invasion started, drones were just hovering overhead and dropping grenades on their targets. Since then it's been 99% about taking out targets on the ground with kamikaze hits. Commonly there's two drones - one to geolocate the target and provide visuals for the operators to carry out an attack and assess success.

And then they started ramming each other mid-air, and now they're ramming aircraft. And this is just the Ukrainian drones. Russia have sophisticated drone tech too with basically all those same talents.

It keeps reminding me of the viral "murderbots" short film that circulated a while ago.

If Ukraine can dig in and hold it, it would significantly improve their hand in negotiations. But you're against negotiations so idk man

You don't honestly think the partisans could hold an election

So Crimea is fine with Russia after it was transferred(illegally?) to Ukraine? I don't get your point

You didn't answer my question. Should Russia cede Kursk & Belgorod to Ukraine in the name of peace?

To simplify things please choose one of the following answers:

Marching on Moscow is old news! Piggy's already done it, but he won't do it again.

Needs must when the devils drives. Folks facing extermination during a war get creative and drones being software interfaced with hardware offer lot's of useful options. Ukraine has been brilliant. They have upended defence planning, destroyed conventional CONOPS and left militaries unsure what to invest in for the future. Everyone's worked out you need drones for ISR and strike but what forms these will take and how they fit with current forces is unknown.

Drone defence is another, EW and resurrection of anti-air guns seem to be the most productive. All military assets require anti-drone defence. Every base, every ship, every airfield and most army vehicles. Expensive business, the remote turrets with sensors, EW and a gun are upwards of a million dollars. ADF needs thousands of them.

Cheap assassination bots are not far off. I started to build one! A small dart shaped drone with POV control system, electric jet engine, sharp pointing bit on the front, accelerate to 150kms/hr, point at target......

It sometimes takes a war to prepare properly for the next one.
Most of our ship survivability lessons and anti-missile technology were honed on lessons learned by the RN during the Faulklands War. Exocet missiles were the bane of RN surface fleet existence.

Mini-drones with a camera and grenade have been devastatingly effective in Ukraine

CIWS systems are around $30m per unit. We used to rotate them on our destroyers as it was cheaper just to put them on deployment units than to kit out all of them.

A bit of summary of where the Ukrainians are at with this advance overnight. Despite the Kremlin lying to the world that the advanced has been stopped, it certainly hasn't. There are Russians crying on why they were left on their own to escape with no help from local administrations (that's because they were busy saving their own ass).

Putins army caught with its pants down. They are responding with draftees. That will end well....

Videos finally coming out from the Ukrainian side. They normally don't release posts unless the area is fully under control and has been reinforced.

So whats with Sudzha ?

Its the biggest town lying on the road between Sumy and Kursk itself. Also with its train station, it stops any rail moving to the south west settlements towards Belgorod.

The E38 road is about four times the distance away from where the UAF currently is. Have the Russians already given up on the numerous settlements in between?

If the UAF do indeed make it that far, then they would have fire control of the road itself and also the train network into Kursk anyhow.

Another thing. If Ukraine was part of NATO there is no way they would have invaded Russia.

It is in the interests of Russia's sovereignty that Ukraine joins NATO to prevent Ukraine returning former Ukrainian territories in the
Russian Federation back to it.

Oh look, its that idiot propagandist War Gonzo back in the fold. You can basically take every single line in that interview as a lie.

Hopefully after only sustaining a minor injury to his foot in the Donbas area after standing on a mine, he can go one better in Kursk.

If they are so adamant that its NATO's doing, then maybe NATO should send more weapons and allow them to be fired without restriction to really give them something to talk about.
