Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Took us long enough
...and have "we" yet joined the International Coalition against the Genocide of Gaza's children?

oh sorry, no such coalition exists, forgot about that.

Because such coalitions are a vehicle for pro -US propaganda, and only exist if they conform with that requirement.

think you mean push one's own barrow...but yes, US imperialism does push its interests through many gun barrels...and none of them are concerned in the least by the welfare of children anywhere on the globe.
oops.
You’ve managed to drag in US propaganda into efforts to “address the issue of the unlawful deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children by the Russian Federation.”
The US is just one of a group of countries involved

The following countries are active members of the coalition:
Albania
Argentina
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Canada
Chile
Costa Rica
Croatia
Czechia
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Georgia
Germany
Greece
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania

Malta
Moldova
Montenegro

North Macedonia
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovenia

Clearly someone is upset there's an international taskforce holding Russia to account over its blatant kidnapping / brainwashing of Ukranian minors on a large scale to far flung regions of Russia.

Because afterall it's just Ruzzia defending against imperialism according to some.

This is Putin's MO. He never ever blames the armed forces of Russia even though they are as shit as they come, because doing so would then solidify the fact that they are shit as they come and advertise it to the world (even though the world already knows).

Instead the scapegoats are the local government officials who he sacks, because you know they are the ones who should be stopping the Ukrainian Army breaking defensive lines and stopping Russian forces from retreating, and then not being able to reclaim the territory back.....

There is also a dilemma in of Turkey helps the evacuation of the Russian troops in Syria, that they know those very same troops would be redeployed to fight Ukraine.

Syria became a dumping ground for failed soldiers and especially failed officers/generals of the Ukrainian war who were sent there in exile.

Not sure the Kremlin are exactly thrilled to have them back, nor I suspect they are happy to go back considering their chances of survival are low.

Bit grain of salt with this guy's tweets. He also has one of a North Korean pleading with a drone that was about to drop a grenade on him but it has the banned word so will let you find it yourselves

You did alot of homework to prove nothing.

People are making a big deal about Russia being kicked out of Syria, but they seemed to be opportunistically using Syria for bases in the region, not really attached to Assad. Helping him into exile also sends a message to the other dictators they prop up that they will not abandon them.

It's not really a big loss for Russia.

It's a logistical problem for Iran and Russia, but not much more than that. The new regime is hardly going to become the US's best buddy in the region and a threat to Russia.

Operationally it is a huge loss. Syria was being used as a base for all Wagner activity in Africa supporting two bit dictators. Also allowed them a warm water Mediterranean port for their navy to operate out of, repair damaged assets as Turkey controls entry to the Black Sea.

Of course Putin had to exile Assad otherwise he would have been captured and much of Putin's activities would have been exposed. It's Yanukovych all over again and the only reason both haven't fallen out of a window is their high profile.

Syria changing does have other problems for Russia and Iran:
  • More competition for Russian gas exports into europe

  • Putin credibility damaged
  • Russia's access to Africa impacted
  • Russia did not pay for bases in Syria. Will this continue?
  • Iran "closest ally" gone
  • Iran's ability to send military equipment to other nations is impacted (Hezbollah)
