How many draft picks do GWS need? Already hold 3, 21 & 39. They will get Geelongs first for Hopper, say 15, another pick for Hill, say late 2nd, 32? ish, Our first may not be enough but what are they going to do with picks 3, 15, 18, 19, 21, 33 & 39.

Thinking we could offer Soldo as a low cost option for their ruck issues, Maybe 19 and Soldo, worst case 12 and Soldo. Could try and offload George aswell maybe, possibly wishful thinking there.

Its a good point you make, they can only have so many picks.

Realistically, what kids do we have or players of value that we can afford to lose, that they would even want?

Soldo is a good one, but value is low.

I wonder if they'd see the upside in someone like Sampson that we see?

They will need a small forward and George probably offers more than Hill in terms of output but I don't think anyone will want him.

RCD wouldn't get a game there.

Banks, Brown and co - dont fill a need.

Biggie - not sure has much value.

I would suggest they probable trade picks 18,19,21 for a top 10 or close to it

33 & 39 for a low 20's pick

They will be very popular on draft night and trade period regardless.

Yeah I'm not sure what we have of value that they'd want. They are obviously short on cap space so was thinking possible best 22 players who they don't have to pay a lot might be tempting. Probably only George and Soldo fit that bill. They might also get 2 good servants who are unlikely to be raided by the Vic clubs a few years into their careers which is always a fear for them with high draft picks.

They will be in the market for future picks I would suggest.

Gees, it looks like they are going to need a pick and a player.

If he’s not going to play AFL and it’s really for coaching why not just offer him an assistant coaching role and not lose a spot on the list on a 37 year old?

Imagine telling 3 time premiership captain Trent Cotchin that we’re bringing in an older player to drive standards and provide leadership to the group

What could Mundy possibly offer in that space as a player that guys like Cotch, Jack and Grimes don’t already?

Its about playing as a 190cm mid I would have thought as well as a 36 year old and coaching.

Cotchin can play as a rookie veteran for a number of years so mainlist should not be affected.

Cotchin can play for a few more years. Mundy really is just a value one year hail mary and really is more coaching replacing a list clogger in aarts equivalent. Frees up a list spot probably in 2023 when retires for good unless something magical happens which is unlikely, but never close the door. Mundy has retired so realistic scenarios are in play here I would have thought with little ego management

I am not saying this will happen but if Cotch could maintain this for 4 more years it would give our prospects a massive boost. Obviously there is a bit of wishful thinking here but if Cotch plays good footy for another 3-4 years it changes our options and strategy I think. It also changes list management options in the short-mid term as salary cap possibilities open up in a few more years.

We have a lot of value in older players, Apart from Cotch, JR, Lynch and even Prestia are critical. If they can be managed better from experience and elongated supporting new draftees its a big win for RFC really and all within the club. Imagine if Dusty could play for us to 38, please have mercy, what bliss. Obviously we understand the Geelong scenario. Can we avert this by keep hitting the draft to support our elders like with Sonsie?

Aside from the suggestion of recruiting a player who is behind our own players we have retired.
You are talking about premierships and Jake Aarts in the same post .
If Jake Aarts or his replacement is playing in a side , that side is not in AFL premiership contention , we’ve all seen that this season .
Here I was thinking Magic was the only one allowed on this board who could dream up such an idea .

On field coach primarily in the reserves, something Aarts can't do to the same level.

Obviously, draftees are in mind, to be coached, as well as doozies down the track.

The idea is we win the next how many premierships?

I think it’s a fair assessment to say Taranto will be leaving the giants and the race is down Collingwood and Tigers.

With pies having to cough up for the new De Goey contract, also fairly certain buyers of Mcstay and Bobby Hill, I would be suggesting that they will be offering a lower contract what tigers are able to offer right now.

It’s hard to see why tigers wouldn’t be favourites for Tim Taranto.

I think an offer of our Picks 12, & 19 will get the deal done. Which trumps any offer Collingwood are able to put up.

Taranto, Prestia and Bolton midfield is starting to sound very handy.
That's too much, especially with the extra weight the first pick on the 2nd night of the draft carries now. We'll get some good offers from other clubs after the first night from other clubs looking to pinch a slider. Assuming Norf don't knock over Suns this weekend too.

I think 12 would just about do it given GWS are desperate to clear some cap space. Hopefully our first pick is a fair bit later than 12 after finals anyway. I think our first and later 2nd pick would be enough. Even better would be a future 1st and say pick 30, which I reckon is a realistic option considering GWS already hold pick 3 and 21 and will probably acquire another 1st rounder for Hopper and two x 2nd rounders for Bruhn and Hill. That's a lot of early picks and list spots so GWS may prefer to start strengthening next years hand. I'd be stoked if we could land Taranto and still take 12 and 19 to the draft.

Here's a question worth asking - If we miss out on Taranto and Hopper, would we consider our 1st, future 1st and a sweetener for pick 1? Say pick 12, future 1st (~12) and 30 as it stands currently. Only last year we were prepared to give up picks 7, 15, 26 and CCJ for pick 1.

How about no to taranto, go to the draft and go hard at Green next year.
Clubs already have a general idea of who might be on the market a couple of years in advance, If Green was gettable we would definitely know already and wouldn’t be chasing Taranto as hard as we are

we'll get him for free in a few years anyway like we did lynch

I heard we actually wanted Taranto last year, but got the paperwork mixed up and accidentally traded in Robbie Tarrant instead.

Source is Yappie dribbles

If Taranto was a good kick, I could be convinced to part with two firsts for him in a deal with something in return. Total value for him should be a first and that's about it.

Green is the guy you part with strong draft capital for, potential growth with more strings to his bow and a bigger necessity to the team.

We gave up pick 6 and a future 2nd round for Prestia and pick 24

Taranto would have to have a similar value to Prestia. To be honest if we do go far in finals I’m not sure how we get it done unless GWS really do desperately need to get him off their books

rather go deeper in finals than worry about whether we have a low enough pick for tim terantoe
