GWS, Melbourne and...erm......

You'd think the only definite is Dees and we are a chance to beat Port and Suns at home and maybe, just maybe Lions at GABBA. The rest you'd have to say we are no chance. I'd say 5 wins would be the maximum unless we improve dramatically.
Bulldogs have Dees twice, GWS, Lions and Port in tonights game. 16th spot is a strong possibility for Saints, Pick 3 in draft.

I just heard Shifter say that Boyd is "199cm and well over 100kg". Moves well, seems to have neat skills around the ground, presents well on the lead, nice enough kick for goal. He will be a first year player next year and be bigger than Cloke, Hawkins and Brown. This sort of player comes around rarely. It's a no contest for me.

GWS pick up Buddy in free agency, then...

St K ----> GWS: #3, #22
GWS ----> St K: #1, #37, #54

... so that we can pick up Boyd...

Would leave GWS with picks 3, 10, 20 and 22. They will probably only want to pick up 3 players in the draft so they might then swap #20 and #22 for say #13 or #14.

Why would be need to do that? If GWS get Buddy no chance they'd take Boyd although they probably would... He should get to Pick 3 easily IMO Melbourne have Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes, Jesse Hogan they are dieing for midfielders so you would think they would take the best midfielder in the draft.

If we get the #3 pick he should slide unless GWS trades Pick 1 for a quality experienced player from another club.

i wouldnt do that. we need as much high end quality as we can get our hands on

boyd will probably slip to three anyway, if he doesnt we get a great mid and then another quality pick at 21

You can hardly count Dawes who is a bona file spud. Clark can play as the ruck/forward in his later years leaving a twin strike force of Hogan and Boyd. It might depend also on whether Melbourne get any sort of a priority pick and of course just how good Boyd is deemed to be. If he's considered to be Nick Riewoldt/Johno Brown/Travis Cloke then surely Melbourne would not pass him up... they did that once before taking Watts in front of Natanui... not clever...

Clearly Melbourne don't think so for whatever reason

Sure but I worry about what happens when Rooey goes. History tells you that gun CHFs go high in the draft (except f/s of course)...

Go with best available, which by all reports is Boyd. If we find out in 2-3 years, we have too many forwards and not enough mids then a trade should be easy enough to work out.

We're in for the long haul, imo. That means while we might not recruit a 'gun' mid (first rounder) this year, we'll probably have a chance to next year.

People don't seem to have any good reason why Melbourne might pass on Boyd? I know they got Hogan, and I know they are in need of midfielders, but we're in a similar position! The club has stated that we are happy with our current forwards in White and Lee going forward, and we're also in desperate need of quality mids.

My point here is not that we won't take Boyd if he drops to our pick - it's that I can't see any justifiable reason that Melbourne would pass up on him.

Lets not forget that the AFL are bringing in an interchange cap from next year. Contested marking is going to spike pretty quickly and we need to prepare for that.

I actually see the interchange cap being a bonus for guys who can play in the Roo style.

Teams will want to use their interchange almost solely for the mids and halfs. They'll leave 2 ruck out on the field the whole time, with one of them in resting mode at any given time.

Hickey I think right now is getting bullied in the contests, but he has great run for a big man. If Spencer White is as mobile as he looked at U18 and can build endurance, we could be well set to have tall men forward that don't need to take marks over a pack, because they'd easily find space.

With all that in mind, I think the aim for the next 2-3 years is take the best Mid you can.
If we get a key defender (I read the other day that Rance is out of contract?) then Stanley also can go forward and be the mobile hard-working forward/2nd ruck.
I would back Stanley, Lee, White and Hickey to have better legs than any 4 big men any team could put at the back or resting ruck. It would be no use if you can't get the ball out of the contest to get it up forward.

Melbourne have literally the worst midfield in the comp.
