Alright kids, if we're going to reach the lofty heights of last year's insanity we'd better get cracking. Accordingly, here's a starter hypothetical prompted by the Shiel rumours;

Let's say Shiel effectively costs us our first rounder this season. Additionally I'm giving Shenton the benefit of doubt for his form this year, and upgrading him, Weller and Templeton.

From there we draft a strong pacey mid in Touk Miller (2nd rnd) and a beast KPF in the person of Reece McKenzie (3rd rnd) and rookie Ahmed Saad. In 2015 we spend our 1st rounder on Rahul's and my boy, very promising 197cm Joshua Schache (Murray Bushrangers)... Then let's fast forward a couple of years from there, and potentially this is what we'd be looking at;

FB: Webster - Delaney - Roberton
HB: Wright - Bruce - Shenton
RK: Hickey - Steven - Dunstan
CR: Newnes - Shiel - Savage*
HF: Saunders - Stanley - Templeton
FF: Billings - McKenzie - Longer
Int: Weller - Curren - Acres - Miller
Em: Schache - Markworth - Ross - (Saad)

Gone: Hayes, Riewoldt, Montagna, Dempster, Fisher, Schneider, Maister, Gwilt, Jones, TDL, Minchington.

Crossroads: Ray, Armitage, Murdoch, Geary, Gilbert, Simpkin, White, Lee, Dunell, Milera, Siposs, Pierce, Holmes.

* I genuinely think he'll make it when settled and with a bit more quality around him.

Thoughts?
I'd be very open to trading our first rounder in some way to get Sheil this year, but probably only if we are exceptionally confident of being able to get a Patton/Boyd at the end of next year, or alternatively that we'd be able to get someone like Schache or Wiedeman in that draft and that we reckon they're as good as whoever we may have otherwise been able to get with say pick 3 this year.

Basically I reckon that if GWS are open to trading either Sheil or Patton (or Cameron, of course), at the end of this year, that we really ought to go hard at getting them, unless we're just super-confident that whoever we'd get with our first pick this year is better value.

If it was for Sheil, I doubt he'd cost us our first pick on his own, unless he just blitzes for the rest of the year, so I'd be very interested to see what else we could get thrown in with him, if we did give up our first rounder (and perhaps something else, such as our 2nd, or an Armo/Gilbo). GWS have plenty more that they could package up with him, such as their end-of-1st-round compo pick, their early 2nd rounder, O'Rourke, Jaksch, or maybe even a Patton, so I'd be very keen to see what we could get in a package deal.

I don't like taking KPF type players that late, the chances of it working out seem so small that we would be better off just getting a mid or even a key defender prospect.

I don't mind the club trading our first pick this year for Shiel if they think the key position talent next year will be as good/better and that we will have a top 3 pick to get them with. Downside with that is that that leaves us with a very young Key forward in 2018 and they might miss out on Roo.

Article is about Melbourne but wanted to see what people's thoughts were.

Would you offer Danger 10 million over 8 years to get him to the Saints? Will be 24 when out of contract...

No thanks. Wait until 2016 before we blow our load on massive FA deals, we can then use it to target the holes in our list when we have a better idea of how the list is coming together. Just seems like jumping the gun to me.

Normally you might be right, but in a KPP-rich draft like 2014 is supposed to be, the quality of those left in the later rounds is likely to be proportionately higher.

McKenzie is meant to be one of the best outside of the 'first-rounders', and may last as he's a tiny bit of a speculative pick; he's only just come back to footy after a year off playing basketball.

Made the Metro squad along with Wright for example, but missed with injury.

I'd be up for taking Cameron Conlon in the rookie draft.

Injury-prone but was rated behind Boyd as the best KPF last year as one stage, Rookie draft a good spot for him.

Just gonna put this out there: This thread is already about 1800 posts longer than any other clubs draft/trade thread. Most clubs don't have one or if they do they are a couple hundred posts long, 3 or so clubs are at about the 1000-1200 post count.

Keep up the good work! I hope Pelchen and Co see all our horrible AWESOME ideas!

Maybe not! :oops:

Best of luck to the lad, REALLY deserves a break. Would still be very nervous about spending a list spot on a bloke that injury-riddled though...

Seriously, how many rookies make it? especially in the back half of the rookie draft? hardly any. It's worth taking risks but personally i hope they can extend rookie lists, come on Gil.

And when i am talking back half of the RD i am talking from Rounds 3+

All of them are average besides Kurt Tippett and maybe Westhoff + Mayne.

You haven't heard? Unc is a changed man.

I think everyone's underrating Colin Garland a bit here. I rate him as probably Melbourne's most underrated KPD. Can shutdown a small or a tall, if they had Garland on Roo in round 1, we probably would have lost - granted Riewoldt dominated a corked Tom McDonald. If we managed to produce a Garland, I'd be very very happy.

Sam Reid isn't average, but I agree about the others.
What has he done to prove he isn't anything but average yet? he has potential but until he starts doing a heap with that potential i think he is average. There is a reason Sydney went after Tippett + Franklin IMO not just because they're stars but i think they aren't overly confident with Reid much anymore but that's not saying he can develop into a very nice KPP.

Feels like we have gone full circle about 50 times already though!
