Acres is more what beej was for us than what Fyfe was and is now to freo or what Lenny or dal was.

I think acres will take time like beej did and like beej we won't know until much later what his position will be

Beej was tried on ball, in key positions, on the wing etc. He was a modern day utility. I feel acres will be similar and will play a variety of roles until he and the side finds its feet. I'm not entirely sold on him but hes not the issue right now

Compare the beej and acres stats and they're very close at the same age

the bonus for us was that BJ was played when fit and definitely was given much more time on ball than Acres who has played mostly as a forward. BJ was looking a lot more spuddish early on and he's probably the player I got most wrong. He was awful early career.

That's some of the funniest stuff I've ever read.

Not one person on this board would be jealous of Melbourne. This is the team that still looks a middling team even though they've had roughly 30 1st round draft picks in the last 15 years. They should be like GWS, but they aren't even close. As for our game against them, we could play that Round 1 game 10x over & get a different result every time. That was their Grand Final, they'd set themselves for that game ever since we beat them a 2nd time last year. No one wants to be on the losing end of a 10yr streak.

Am I jealous of their young blokes, **** no. They got Oliver by trading a future pick.... Well, we have our own future pick this year courtesy of Hawthorn. Am I jealous of Petracca? **** no. Bloke looks likes the biggest downhill skier of all time & is all hype. I laugh every time the commentators wet their pants in excitement over him executing a simple kick or handball - it's ******* hilarious. People hang shit on Paddy for not having a tank, Petracca would have the worst tank on that entire Melbourne list.

If we look at our own list, the only area we lack depth in is the midfield class, both inside & outside, as well as a 3rd tall defender type. Forward line & backline has plenty of depth.

I'm sick of all the doom & gloom. Melbourne have beaten us & Carlton. We have beaten Collingwood & Brisbane, while also leading for 3/4s of the games against West Coast (away) & Geelong. We are far from a finished product, but don't paint us that a team like Melbourne is better than us. They are sitting on exactly the same amount of wins & losses & in no way looked better than we have bar our shit effort in round 1.
Amen

Besides the fact that Melbourne has beaten us once, there is nothing that suggests they are ahead of us. They sit 2 and 3 exactly the same as us after finishing comfortably below us last year and being beaten by us comfortably twice.

They also don't have the luxury of two high draft picks and a shit load of cash to bring in a FA.

Yes there midfield has some potential no doubt, but our forward and back lines are well ahead as units.

Melbourne have not done anything yet, just like us. And I predict they will finish fairly close to us on the ladder again.

When did Weideman suddenly become a star? Membery, Bruce and McCartin are all miles ahead of him based on his output thus far....
Weideman not as good but Hogan way better. Hogan >>> Bruce/ Membrey > Weideman

I'd laugh if over on the Dees board they are arguing over whether Richmond is tracking better.

"They beat us, they've got a better song, Riewoldt looks like he's played 150 more games than Hogan, the fact that they've got Rance means we will never sort our back line out, Rioli was drafted after Petracca and he had a better game, I thought Viney was meant to be our Joel Selwood."

Not having a go at Crusty, I'm enjoying the discussion.

You're losing this argument.

So all we've gathered from your analysis is that Hogan is better than our own forwards in an individual basis.... Well no shit.

Their midfield is better than ours.... Well no shit.

Our backline is better as a unit. Our forward line as a whole functions better.

Why should we be jealous of Melbourne? I still don't see it
Unfortunately for you I'm not losing this argument :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Although as I already said, and seemingly everyone except you agreed to disagree.

Now, given they a percentage noticeably higher than ours it seems to imply, contrary to your argument that they score more than us OR they keep their opponents from scoring less than us. And given you are so exceedingly adamant that our defence is better then it's fairly obvious they score more.

Better for every other club . ;)

Last year was said to be a good draft , and by all accounts it is.
I just hope that Long is a genuine thing, and that we didn't get sucked in to looking for a type of player that wasn't there in that draft.
Some of the good honest midfielders are starting to sound good.
We would have been nuts not to accept the Hawks trade though.

You aren't giving our players enough credit and giving way too much to players on other teams. I would also choose a few teams forward line before ours but I reckon we're doing pretty well in that department.

Weideman has been absolute rubbish in the AFL this year - ask any Melbourne supporter, he just isn't ready yet. Hence why undersized, 26 year-old mature age recruit Tim Smith was brought in last night.

Membrey kicked 44.18 last year, which was the second best accuracy of anyone who kicked more than 40 goals (behind Cyril). He has been off in that regard this year but kicked better on the weekend. For me it's just a temporary case of the yips with him.

You obviously have a better grasp on Battle than all of our recruiters because they would never have taken him if he had practically no positive attributes at all like you seem to think.

I'll give you Adelaide, as they are leaps and bounds ahead of any other forward line in the competition.

Tippett is eternally injured and when he does get on the park on he's extremely inconsistent. Reid has kicked an amazing 105 goals in 103 games, which is in uniquely bad territory for a key forward. Go and ask Sydney fans what they think of Sinclair and they'll probably beg you to take him off their hands.
RE: Battle, they took him cos he shows a decent understanding of when and where to lead to and he kicks fairly well.

Weideman actually looks pretty good given he's playing more than McCartin lmao. And what you're saying is you'd take Bruce (Unable to take a pack mark or kick straight), McCartin (unable to get on the field), Membrey (Unable to kick straight), Battle (too short, can't turn, can't jump, can't run very far, can't run very fast) and Marshall (completely untried rookie and unknown quantity over EVERY other group of tall forwards in the AFL? You can't honestly be serious mate.

Adelaide have Walker, Jenkins, Lynch and Betts all capable of leading, marking and kicking. As backup they have Elliot Himmelberg, Lever as a swingman and Otten very capable as a third tall.

Sydney have Franklin, Tippett, Reid as well as Sinclair who unlike our ruckmen can rest forward. As well as the athletic freak Aliir Aliir who can swing forward same goes for Michael Talia.

I could go on, but I won't cos the point is well and truly made.

The player we apparently wanted was there though. Shai Bolton is a small creative forward that can go through the middle. But I guess the recruiters saw something in Long.

They took him because they think he will be a very good player and showed a fair bit in the u/18 comp and is a switched on kid

this pack marking thing is pretty ridiculous, how many forwards consistently take pack marks? Higher hit rate with ruckmen than forwards. Casboult comes to mind, also has the fans in the pocket licking their lips when he's kicking for goal.

worse comes to worse we'll have 2 very promising young mids come draft time. Maybe a free agent or two also. When is the next academy game? Let me feast my eyeballs

Doesn't make up for his athletic deficiencies.
And if you are referring to his draft combo results think it is well known he was on 1 leg with a injured ankle. Actually has very good endurance for his size
