Not sure if serious.

How do you tell the difference between someone who is a match winner and someone who is a downhill skier?

Both have good games in wins, poor games in losses.

One generates play and drives the team. Cripps for Carlton would be a good example. If he is shut down by opposition and doesn't play well or doesn't play at all due to injury Carlton look rudderless. The other piggy backs off of dominant team mates or a dominant team performance. See Tippa's 7 goal haul against Brisbane.

A downhill skiier never plays well in losses because they rely on the rest of the team performing to perform themselves. They do not generate play so when the play isn't being generated, they are useless.

In contrast, a match winner is a player that has the ability to lift the team over the line to a winning position. However by virtue of the game being a team sport, this won't always work, so you'd expect that on occasion a match winner will play well in losses.

Tipungwuti not even scoring in 5 losses suggests he is a downhill skiier over that period

So forwards can be downhill skiers but midfielders can't?

So why aren't they winning some games when Tipungwuti doesn't play well?

Wouldn't their match winners be lifting the other players to a few victories?

Yeah that's totally what I said.
Well isn't it?

Midfielders are at the coal face and start things off. Therefore they must be the initiators.

And forwards are the recipients of work up the field, therefore are the skiers.

I used Cripps as an example as it's so blatantly obvious how badly Carlton drop off without him. Tex is considered a barometer for us and is a forward.

Ok but we're back to the start. How do we tell the difference?

When Tex plays well we win. Alright.

How do we know he's not capitalising on work by Sloane, Crouch, Crouch, Smith?

How do we know he's not just skiing in our victories off the good work of others?

Cripps isn't a barometer. He normally plays well when Carlton play bad. A barometer has consistent correlation with team performance.

Carlton as a team are bad. But they are a whole lot less bad when he plays well. And if they want a chance to win games both he and Kreuzer need to fire. He's definitely not better when Carlton are losing by plenty like you suggest.
