Wait why are people shocked that Acres is being traded "out of nowhere"?

His name has been put in hypothetical trades from the start.

It wasn't all that long ago that someone in here mentioned Hamill's discussion about Dunstan and Acres. That we would only keep one of them.

Once Dunstan signed I assumed Acres was available.

It didn't seem that Freo were keen but we have pushed it to help smooth things out. We keep our rep of being a great club to deal with. We are a team that will get deals done for the betterment of all parties.

This is nowhere near the Kelly deal.

We are giving up 1x 1st, 1x 2nd & Acres for Hill and 1x 3rd.

Pick 58 has zero impact on us this year as our draft will basically be Biggie, Wilkie and a late pick on a mature/depth ruck.

Acres has potential, sure, but he wasn't in the best 25 of our team next year while Hill would be top 3 in the BnF and he doesn't even have a locker yet!

Yes, I would have loved to see how Blake went with a new coach. Yes, I think he is worth more than a 3rd. On the open market that's probably about right though.

Sorry for the rant but this is what cripples the Saints historically: The fear of ****ing up again. We hesitate. We blink. We try to 'not lose' instead of going for the win. We look at our history and say "****, not again."

We are a club crippled with depression. Always the victim.

**** that.

"Oh no. How we will stand up without 35 goals from Josh Bruce!?!"

Bitch the Tigers just won the premiership by 15 goals without "the best defender of a generation" and "the glue holding their backline together".

We will survive without Josh Bruce.

Let's embrace the positives:

Brad Hill AA next year. Howard future Captain. Jones will win a BnF. Butler will kick some great goals and Paddy Ryder will elevate us to being one of the best destination clubs for indigenous players.

Shit, it wasn't that long ago we had zero input in the indigenous communities.

I hate the AFL system. The whole comp is ****ed from an equality POV but geez, we are smashing that system and using it beautifully this off season.

Lethers and Gubby are doing great things right now.

Embrace it.
Love it.

Go the ****ing Sainters!

But they played him in there at Sydney to not much affect.

How do you see the midfield lining up with him at the saints?

Tbh I reckon it's Steele Ross Hanners. With Clark getting more time in there. Jones/Gresham/Sinclair getting some time. Dunstan could be a round 1 starter. I know he's not great but as an inside mid he could be seen as the better option.

To me Gresham is a player with plenty of creativity, but we've had him shovelling coal at the face. I'd love to move his role a bit.
Most of our centre clearances this year were from Gresham, Marshall, and Dunstan. Less from Ross and Steele.

Jones HAS at times won big numbers of contested possessions and clearances but we don't know how he'd go there.
It seems strange that we'd head hunt him to play a role in the backline though, where we seem to have reasonable talent and depth.

Exactly. 2020 2nd is going to be like a pick in 30s with all the academy picks and father/sons. Acres was a depth player, not best 22 and I think the 3rd is a pick swap. And getting Howard with 18 is basically the whole trade when you gross it all up.

It is a good deal for Saints and a reasonable deal for Freo. How it should be.

Saints have been given a Xmas present and some people here, somehow, are trying to turn it into a dung hill.

Battle can play forward. Or Carlisle if we are down at the start of the last quarter ;)

And we will need to turn either Joyce, Marsh, Claverino or Logan Austin into a forward since all 4 cant play at sandy in the one position.

Joyce played a few games at the end of the season at FF and didn't look horrible. Not ideal but worth a try. He keeps improving every time he plays so there is something to work with.

And we just pray we dont experience the same injuries next season,

Just regarding versatility.
I think i read that Howard had played some ruck in the SAFL.

I don't think Austin , Marsh and Claverino play th same role.
Austin in particular seems to play more like Roberton.

This salary dump talk is interesting. It definitely does free up huge money to make a play at another gun, given Stuv and Bruce are also mostly off the books.

I mentioned we were in one of the Crouch brothers ears a few weeks ago. Hopefully Gubby is working his magic for one final deal at the death. We've been fantastic this trade period, I think we should trust Gags and Lethers that there's a reason behind every move.

It's not just Hill that we're getting back.
Yes we are also getting back 500k and a 3rd for a 2020 VFL player.

Why people are upset at this, I have no idea.
500k for that underperforming cocktease is appalling.

Was a fan, then realised the truth, Stanley Mk II

It would be hilarious if we got the Hill trade done then straight away traded our future 1st for someone. Freo fans would love it.
