I think you’ve nailed it.

Freo were originally all about wanting the picks throughout the week. Unfortunately for Blake, he became Bell’s “face saver” in the end.
Nothing can save Bell's face!
It is beyond repair!

As for the trade and him looking like a fool
By the time he was done with us, it was more than
The Golden Goose could handle. his tiny little steps
Had a particular spring to them!

We can spin it any way we like seeing we got our man!
But i'm sure the Purple people are satisfied with their little outcome!
Gaining Acres was a big bonus for them, that hopefully will not
Come back to bite us on our already sore bum!

I can't help thinking the Saints have to become better poker players.
With Hill contracted , the worst thing was that the news got out that Hill was totally committed to the Saints and we were totally committed to him.
It should have been more a case of " uh we heard that guy there desperately wants to return to Victoria, we can take him off your hands if the deal is right".

I still can't believe he is worth more than a single first round pick.

Bell seemed convinced that Freo would get pick 6 and our next year's first (possibly around pick 10) for Hill. What he ended up getting was this year's pick 10, a fringe player and a future pick around 30 (as well as some very minor late picks that muddied the water a bit for him). Our initial offer to Freo was better than our later offer, but by them rejecting that initial offer, we were able to split pick six and get Howard as well.

I agree we could have played our cards differently in the weeks leading up to the trade period, but by getting both Hill and Howard - essentially for pick 6 and a future second (and Acres) - everything came together beautifully for us. (Ultimately, Bell's stubbornness worked in our favour.)

I could do with the group you hang with Stewie!
F#ck knows it doesn't take much for my good self to be swept up into a vortex of fantasy and good vibes! 🥳

Could do with them in my personal life too tbh! 😟

Be careful what you wish for MM! ;)

It will improve in a year or two when Saints don't have desperate tattooed on their faces.
Agree with you on Hill, but better to over pay than not get him at all.

That's not what I was saying though. On here people said a positive of the trades was the salary dump we were going to get.

I'm merely asking is it a salary dump or did we front load their contracts? Because the statements made this trade period completely contradict the statements made for the last 5 years!!!!

Acres reportedly on 550k in 2020.
I remember Lethlean suggesting (after Trade period) that our cap was tightening. but still ok. Said we want it to be tight, all the big clubs are stretched to the limit.

I'd suggest with Steven and McCartin payouts plus the forward loading of Haneberry, Gresham et al there'd be some relief next year and the year after.

I'll admit , the Saints walking out of the negotiations and splitting the pick within 15 minutes, was one of the coolest things that i've heard of in ANY trade period. BLAM

Even Young's payout must be under the cap for 2020.

Cap being tight is such a loose comment considering your floor is 95%.
Yeah after bringing in 5 blokes with 3 on much better money at a guess it would increase. We also lost Bruce and Steven who would probably be in our top 3 for salary.
Factor in a Billing’s and Gresham increase and I would guess we sit at 97%ish which would still allow for a big name if we wanted. This time next year you remove the salary we are still paying jack and Young. That’s enough alone for a Butler level player most likely.

I just find it amazing that for years we've been hearing about the big war chest and front loading contracts.

Even during the trade period we were chest beating about the front loading of everyone.

Then we get the bruce, stuv and acres trades and we are justifying them on here by saying it's a salary dump!

Like so we were front loading stuv and bruce our two biggest earners with hanners excluded and then we're like yeah nah we are salary dumping them now!

It can't be both!!!! So what is it?
there is salary dump and therse SALARY DUMP ...
one is where you need to get rid of someone because you cant fit everyone in ... the other is you are paying far to much for someone that doesnt match their importance to the team... rightly or wrongly we saw Bruce as an excess to our needs but due to the previous years he was structured as one of our higest paid players dumping his salary as a top end player when he is though of being a mid range player makes sence (provided your assesment of the player is spot on) . so it was a dump of salary but not the type you might see Collingwood need to do next year or what Sydney have had to do previously

exactly this .... Freo needed to look as if they "won" the trade especially after we called their bluff on pick 6 ... Acres was steak knives to make the deal look better for freo (much to my displeasure in that) . Blake didnt want to go but was open to go .. the club were not pushing him out the door but were willing to part ways if it got their deals over the line ...
its actually a sign of maturity the way we manufactured the players who left the club getting to their new clubs in a classy and respectful way to the player and the clubs involved ...

yeah and no .... if you are negotiating then yes you dont want to show your hand by comitting early .. but the hill deal was only one deal we had on the go and by having Hill publicly declare he wanted us and us declaring we were going to get him that act got the ball rolling on the other deals happening ... yeah we prob over paid for hill but the flow on on what landing Hill gets us makes up for that ... and thats not even factoring in what hill does for our team on field ...
as a really good poker player will tell you you need to be fluid and agile enough to make the changes that suits the hand you are delivered you cant play every hand the same way

Its good to see a player like Eddy Betts return to his old club when things weren't working out for him at the new one, and it was notable that Ryder didn't want to. Bad blood should be unnecessary in this business.

Don't screw someone over and they won't hate your guts.
If a club isn't happy with a player , explain to them why, and give them opportunities to add value.
If a club can't give the contract the player wants, explain to them why and give them opportunities to stay or go if they want to. ( up to a point ).
There will always be people who's ego's get in the way of this sort of thing though.

Even Young's payout must be under the cap for 2020.
Not sure about this, technically contracts finish 31 October (I think) so if we are able to conclude a contract and satisfy all liabilities under that contract prior to 31/10 it may be included in the 2019 'Total Player Payments'. Not sure, but a reasonable theory.

I think the funniest thing out of the trade period was Essendon getting a high rating when they did nothing. How hard is it to sit there on your hands, shaking your head in denial while saying, no,no,no to any trade deals ? My grandma could've done that. But somehow the Dildoro legends grows.

Because not taking 2 x top 10 draft picks for a bloke that hasn't played for 2 years is the king dick move of the off season.

Now if Essendon can get him fully fit, mentally ready and 100% committed to the club then they could make a real go of winning a final in 2020 before they watch him walk out the door for a single compensation pick.

It's really a brilliant plan when you think about it.

Cameron 27 next year. Don't you usually want them out. Anyway we have no hope in getting him.

Yep. Cameron not what we need.

2 of Crouch / Whitfield / Zac Williams is what we need.

One can only dream.....

its a strange situation the essendon one ... realistically long term the odds are stacked aginst them coming out of the daniher trade winners ...
if Joe breaks down again and doesnt play - Dildo cost them 2 first round picks
if Joe go's as a free agent next year and does well for Sydney in 2021 - dildo lost 2 first round picks for prob 1
if Joe go's as a free agent next year and does nothing for Sydney in 2021 - Dildo still lost them an extra first round pick
if Joe comes good and decides to play on with essendon - the eyes will be on to see if Joe produces enough to make it worth losing two first round picks for him ...

lot of risk for not much rewards and the odds stacked strongly against Essendon ... will be interesting to see how it plays out
