Sorry but what has Merrett brought to Essendon that has made them into a powerhouse top 8 side year after year?

The fact that Essendon has hardly figured in the finals over Merrett's glittering career says a lot

Sorry but I just don't buy that he would add a great deal to our side ...... at a huge salary cap cost ........ that we don't already have developing for less cost

He doesn't kick goals or assist goals ...... just another cheap possession gatherer with no x-factor who would put a huge crater in our SC

Happy to look elsewhere

How many years did GC feature in finals with Gary Ablett was there? Takes more than 1 player to make a good team

It's a team game, and any average team might have a champion player who spends his career never playing in finals. Not saying Merrett is a champ, but he is a quality mid playing in an ordinary team, and if we added him to our lineup, it would be a big plus as we need quality in the midfield. More chance of us playing finals again than Essendon has.

On that logic Jack Steven should have never bothered to play footy, and any of Nick Riewoldt's post 2011 games were not worth counting. Richmond were also crazy to take Lynch and Prestia. if he helps to win a premiership what does it matter what he costs. Being a top team make others come cheaper as well.

It's been very well known and much spoken about that Essendon have been badly lacking in strong inside bulls in recent years, so I'd very much like to see how Merrett went if he had Steele/Crouch/Bytel even Gresham types feeding it out to him.

Then he could be a real cream-on-the-cake type, who does tip you over the edge for a flag.

Yeah, to me Kelly or him would be handy in Ratts run a roll game plan too. Merrett would be my pick of the two just because of his physical resilience. Similar quality players but the recent injuries to Kelly make him a bit less attractive.

I think we're in a position now where we don't need to chase and over pay FA's.

I couldn't see Dodo accepting band 2 compo, so it's basically a guaranteed bidding war.

Merritt isn't a player we want to get stuck in that scenario with. I would consider it with Cripps for example, and maybe Fyfe a couple of years ago.

As with Crouch the acquisition of any FA needs to be %100 on our terms, which means he takes a bit under his market value to play at Stkilda with no catches or involvement from their former club.

Jelly might be that guy, might also not be.

I would like to see how our juniors go before breaking the bank too.
We have the time...

Ben King

He'd be stupid to go to a club to play defence when he's had such a promising start to his career as a forward.

So if he comes to us it would be to play forward with his brother IMO.

We are stacked with key forwards and chose to take another in the first round last year. Good players are good players, but is another key forward a priority?

Zak Merrett

We'd be mad not to take him as a FA is available but not interested in trading for him.

Very close in stats including games played.

Personally I’d prefer Kelly, the extra height and more X factor being the deciding factors for me. Absolutely agree with those advocating for aggressive recruiting, standing still in professional sport is going backwards.

Sick of participation ribbons then do something about it, which the club has been doing recently. If we can can hold our ground this year then surely we’re well placed to land an A grader or two.

Anybody who watched any of the games last year (and especially the SF against Richmond) knows that our first priority should be a tall midfield player - and there's an UFA from Melbourne who fits the bill perfectly.
How tall does our midfield have to be?

Crouch, Steele, Ross and Clark are all at least 6 foot 1 which is the same size as Martin (Richmond's tallest mid).

I just think we need quality mids, preferably that can play more tham one role.I don't think our height is a drama.

I'm going to assume Bing isn't happening, I just don't see him wanting to leave such a talented young group for significantly less coin, even if it is to play with his brother for the team he supported growing up. Honestly, at this stage let's just be happy with Max and hope he doesn't choose to join Ben on the Gold Coast.

Going forward I see salary cap space being our main issue (I'm talking 2022-2023 and beyond), so I really don't want to be overpaying for players that are more of a luxury rather than a necessity (see Merrett).

At this stage, I think I would like to see us try and get any sort of currency back for guys who are likely to be forced out, like Lonie, Dunstan, hell maybe even Seb Ross if Bytel can be the player many think he will be.

If we could find a way to bring our 2022 1st round pick into 2021, I would be doing it. The idea of getting another two first round teenagers into our developing list is a fantastic prospect. Would just go best available, let them push the group up from the bottom, if they can't get a game you can move them on in a couple of years, if they force out another player and they request a trade sobeit, I think we are in a really, really rare position where we are wellplaced for a long term period of contention. Bring in as many quality youngsters as we can and we will not be pressured to overpay to keep our stars as well.

I would not want to see guys like Billings (no offence, I rate him) signing contracts for $800+, but if we have no youth coming through we would likely feel that we need to keep our stars or we lose our chance to contend. This line of thinking just pushes the problem down the track (see St Kilda 2011).

My theory is that GC will simply not accept 2 late first round picks for Bing, and we have little else on the shelf to offer.
Matty Alison will be part of any trade offer to fill the Bing sized hole, and they will still take our 2 firsts for good measure.

Good progression for Matty with more money, and he can become the main man and get senior games, which won't happen with us.
GC will also be humming once the Red Jesus gets back on the park.

They only need an older KPF to hold the fort at that point, and that guy could be Tex whom they can trade for comfortably.

Having Battle and Bing that can swing between CHF and CHB would be just dandy, and I can't see the possibility that Bing's decision would rest on where we want him to play.
He either wants to come home and play at StKilda or he doesn't.

Unfortunately Allison will be worth very little.

He was pick 20 odd and will likely not play senior footy next year.

I've gotta disagree on Bings position he plays having little to do with his decision.

He's been about as good as you could expect a big key forward to be in the first two years of his career. I don't see him going to any club to play defence when he's on track to have an amazing career as a key forward.

Both Seb and Dunny are FA/RFA and their compo value would roughly be their trade value.
However if we took a Jelly/Merritt we'd get no compo for either of our boys.

Including my post above for a Bing trade, if Bytel and Bynes look like the real deal we could neglect the FA market
and move on Seb and Dunny (Lonie), also getting something back with Bing, like a second round pick or a player.

Whilst it's not very glamorous, we'd have a fist full of mid table picks and no more holes in our best 22.
Picks around there are ideal for doing lots of business, be that for moving up in the draft or acquiring players that can't get a gig.

The last two trade periods have shown that our list management team are able to think out of the box and get the players they want.

Lethlean said something along those lines on the last day of trade period - that anyone who signs a contract with St Kilda won't be overpaid and used Steele as an example of someone who could have been paid more but took less to keep our list strong.

Were Bing not a twin to Max and a Stkilda fan, I would be with you on that.

In reality he has no professional reason to play at StKilda what-so-ever.
If he chooses to come it will be solely a matter of the heart, which is why I think he will be less fussy about position.

Since he has a junior history of playing CHB and CHF with Max, it will be his memories of those times which will form his feeling about it now.

Personally I think he would be gutted if he misses out on a StKilda premiership while Max holds the cup aloft.
Fear of missing out would be a huge driver...

If it were solely based on heart he'd already be here and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I'm sure he will weigh up his decision on a number of aspects including being able to play at the club he supported as a kid and with his brother, contract size and length, where he can better his career etc.

That's just untrue.
Even if he wanted to leave GC, the clubs need to facilitate a trade which obviously hasn't happened yet.
He is also contracted to the GC.

But I'll reiterate. He has NO professional reason to leave CG. None.

I agree he has no professional reason to leave GC, that was my point?

This is the second time you have said this , why do you think that's going to happen , do you have a crystal ball

This is the second time you have said this , why do you think that's going to happen , do you have a crystal ball
For a few reasons I suppose.
1. List wise, Matty wasn't exactly a glaring need.
2. No way 2 late 1st picks will satisfy GC in trade
3. Losing Bing means they need a replacement young KPF
4. Any other player of ours that GC might want will be required at the Saints. We have little else to offer.

Nothing is for sure though. If I'm the GC list manager I'll be asking for Battle.

How the fu** do Carlton have 67k members?

Heard two people on the radio say it was rubbish - when you bought a new membership you were given a free one for someone else.
Knowing, Carltons history of being less than upfront, to put it politely, I wouldn’t put it past them to be counting these additional “free” members in their tally.
They are literally giving away free memberships this year.

Not sure if they are counted on the tally?
