A few years back there was that out roar that Lin Jong was touring the pies facility mid season.

he ended up staying at the dogs. Butat the time the pies came out and said that’s common practice.

the league is just behind on the times. We have free agency and we pretend the conversations only happen when the season ends. Not that coaches players and presidents have already spoken to a potential player

As a fan I prefer the mystique of a player being part of the club until he/she isn’t - even if behind the scenes it is otherwise.

Can anyone explain how Dunstan can supposedly be taken as a delisted free agent when the delisted free agency period doesn’t open for another two weeks?

i think he was a UFA but his contract was such low value it never hit the triggers required for compensation.

Wasn't (yet) delisted. So he went as an UFA (Unrestricted Free Agent). I think....

Yuck. This is our last chance and the first for ages to get a high end pick and we are down grading it into the left overs bin. Great for the idiots that are all in on Ben King but it will just mean that GC ask for the two firsts for 2022 and the 2023 first as well.....and we don't even have a second in either year.

To me that's almost the worst of all worlds. If the two NGAs go inside 20 we are left with 6 picks that won't get used.....and we pay them to have Battle.

Yep its asking for trouble going into 2022 with 2x 1sts.

GC will say thanks & chuck in 2023 too.

It’s 2 chats with 2 different scenarios.
I was having a play last night with points.

What I proposed was
STK OUT - F2 / Battle + 1 yr salary

BRIS OUT - #16 + #54 + #60

That gives STK 2 1st rnd picks (2021) + enough points for NGA.

Right now we don’t have enough points for the NGA kids. So if they don’t go inside top 20 we aren’t getting them anyway.

I also see your point about the amount of picks outside 50. Then we better get creative on the interest in Lonie and Long, roll the higher draft picks as a sweetener to get a better return pick?

FYI, Just having some fun. Doubt anything would happen. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Wrong.

We don't need to have enough points for the NGA kids. We are allowed to go into deficit.

Someone really needs to dig up a reel of journos (maybe even just Dopey King would do) and what they said about Melbourne two years ago. As our coach always says: never as bad, never as good. So reactionary.
We, and they need to talk about something and fill that insatiable need for footy.

Correct and currently if both are bid on in the 20's it will likely wipe out our Future 2nd round pick in 2022 based on the deficit we currently have as well as the 3 x 60's picks in this draft. So we can match any bid it just will cost us in next years draft most likely.

Huh! I did not know that.
Well that would of been handy to know before I sat up till 2am mucking around on that lol!!

The first point above is incorrect the 197 points relates to the discount we get not the cost AFL changed the 20% discount to flat 197 point discount for picks between 21-40. The cost will be the value of the draft pick the NGA is selected at so worst case

Pick 21 = 878 Points if we match we get a discount of 197 points so cost to us is = 681 points

So the discount is actually 22% at this pick and increases with each pick taken later as the discount is a flat 197 points for any pick between 21 - 40.

Pick 40 = 429 Points if we match discount of 197 points so cost to us is = 232 Points or 46% discount

So worst case if both our NGA's were bid on at Pick 21 and 22 we would need to find = 878 + 845 = 1723 - (197 +197) = 1329 Points

Best case they are bid on after 40 and we just use next available selection.

See link for details https://www.afl.com.au/news/523629/...ection-period-nab-afl-mid-season-rookie-draft

So my calculations were generally correct except for the flat 197 discount.

The AFL only allow us to go into deficit if we have points for the deficit in next years draft. For this purpose they calculate the points as if we finish top of the ladder.

They will not allow us to write off the points needed.

So if we had no second round pick, and not enough points in the later picks next year, we either use the first round pick or they don't allow the deficit.

Worst case scenario for deficit.

Owens 20 - 912 points - 197 = 715 points.
Windhager - 878 points - 197 = 681 points.

Total points needed = 1396 points.
-------------------------------
Points we have in the tail end of the draft.
62 66 and 67. Guessinig they will come forward to 50ish. We will get around 778 points.

Deficit = 618.

AFL calculate allowable deficit as :
First round 985. Second round 502. 3rd round 220. 2x 4th round. 38.

If we traded out the second round pick, we would either be banned from matching, or we would need to downgrade our first round pick by around 400 points. Possibly turning it into a second round pick.

note that the actual points that we get for our future picks will depend where we finish next year. The points in the above scenario are those used by the AFL for calculating whether or not they will allow you to go into deficit.
-------------------------------

Probably a more likely scenario is :
Owens - Pick 24 785 points -197 = 588
Windhanger pick 32 584 points -197 = 387
Total = 975

Deficit around 197 points.

If we finished , hmmm 5th on the ladder next year, our second round pick would be 584 points and would turn into an early 3rd.

If we traded our 2022 second now we could absorb the points with our 2022 future 3rd.

Bing’s management is pissed off at the Saints.

Is Bing pissed off at the Saints?

Cos that’s all I care about.
To be fair, I think that original tweet wasn't good, but his manager is bringing up again bringing it into focus again after 3years. If he really wants Ben to concentrate on his footy, he would be best of not drawing further attention to it

Pretty sure the trainee receptionist made that tweet.
