I keep hearing people say that we're upgrading Strachan but... why? I like him and all, but why upgrade a depth player who goes out of contract next year?
Because he has maxxed out his 4 years allowed on the rookie list unless the AFL change the rules AGAIN.

Surely norths future 2nd is worth more than pick 23 if we wanted to push up this year ( not saying we will but what we’ve done doesn’t make it less possible )
It 100% is.

Not sure why Sanders doesn't see that - the same pick in next year's draft is worth vastly more than this year.

Now, I don't think they did it for Phillipou, but if they did want to do a trade, I think we've increased the value of the assets we have.

given we have traded out of this draft completely- yes!
There is no reason why we can't easily get back in if we really wanted to using either our 2023 2nd or North Melbourne's 2nd we procured through the trade out of our 2022 #23....both have more value than this year's 2nd we traded, the Roos 2nd especially at this point in time. Of course it would only be for the right player our recruiting team considered had slipped way below where they rated him at on their board.....otherwise it's full steam ahead to 2023 with the pick which could then be used either in the draft or on a mature aged trade in.

Ultimate AFL Draft guide: Your club’s list needs, latest intel and who they could take

What does your club’s list need? And, more importantly, who could be available to fill them in this year’s draft? We run the rule over every team.

ADELAIDE

Draft picks: 46, 56, 59

List needs: Midfield class and height, key defender, young ruckman

Who could be available at first pick: Max Michalanney

Who’s in the mix after that: Jaxon Binns, Adam D’Aloia, Kyle Marshall, Will Verrall, Phoenix Foster, James Van Es

After Adelaide gave up pick 5 in a trade to land Gold Coast’s Izak Rankine, and then 23 to North Melbourne in exchange for pick 59 and the Roos’ 2023 second-round selection, it’s set to be all about father-son prospect and Norwood defender Max Michalanney on draft night. The Crows strengthened their draft hand for what is set to be a stronger crop next year, while arming itself with two extra late-round picks – one from a seperate trade with Brisbane – to match the bid for Michalanney, which is expected to come between 25 and 40. But, as it now stands, there will be no player taken before the versatile defender, ruling a line through homegrown ruckman Harry Barnett and tall midfield bolter Ed Allan. And it still looks unlikely Isaac Keeler, a Crows Next Generation Academy prospect and forward/ruck, will fall to pick 40, where Adelaide gets access to him.

Latest word: After showing significant interest in Barnett, all eyes were on the Crows at pick 23. But after the latest pick swaps, it now might just be Michalanney and a late-round pick, depending on when the bid comes.

It’s likely these will come into picks 44, 54 and 57 once the Brisbane picks in the 30s are swallowed up matching Ashcroft.

Would then be 197 + 362 + 220 + 182, enough to match pick 19. Cannot see Max going that early.

I’m wondering if we’re hoping one of those picks in the 50’s won’t be chewed up so that we can get a project Ruck, otherwise possibly rookie draft

If anything bringing a future 2nd into the equation actually allows us more flexibility in adding a 2nd round pick to our future 1st if we were looking to get back into this draft.

I don’t think you’re allowed to trade out a future 1st unless you have at least one future 2nd/3rd/4th on each line, is that correct?

Or stronger, so 2 x 2nds and a third (no 4th) or 2 x 2nds and a fourth (no third). A second, third and fourth is the minimum

but do you think they will? I don't... based on their behaviour only

All I know is we now have a stronger hand to move up the order with the Roos' 2023 2nd than when we held the 2022 #23 if we really feel that a player has slipped way lower than we rated him in this draft

Agreed. Contrary to many, I think Reid's comments on maximizing flexibility in the next two drafts, clearly flagged the possibility of moving back up this year, if appropriate.

The north F2 and our F2 packaged up would no doubt be quite attractive to a side should the right opportunity come

two unknown picks
we can all crystal ball they are good picks but that devalues them

tactically this has been done to stop an early bid by gws at 16 is what I have heard. could be bs I don't know.

How does it somehow stop GWS from biding at 16?..

if they wanted to bid at 16 when we had pick 23.. then why would that change now we have nominated MM and at the same time announced we have traded out pick 23?..
