I have no idea if the mids we drafted are any good, but we have drafted a lot of mids. Now talk is Bond will play back pocket, but we drafted Jones to play mid who is playing back pocket, so what’s his future?

Excluding the senior mids, mids we’ve drafted:

Jones - Back pocket
McHenry - forward pest
Berry- mid
Schoenberg - mid
Soligo - mid
Taylor - you’d expect mid
Pedlar - better be a decent mid
Dowling - mid
Bond - mid- defender?
Hately - likely delisting

Then throw in high draft picks in Rachelle and Rankine who are supposed to also play midfield.

So we’ve got Berry, Schoenberg, Soligo, Taylor, Pedlar, Dowling, Bond, Rachelle and Rankine, all expected to play midfield. Now not all will make it, but a high number should and throw in Laird and Keays and that’s a shit load of mids with a lot needing development. Plus hopefully we draft a high end mid next year.

Meanwhile we have ZERO developing rucks and Borlase as a developing key back but really, there are still questions marks on him.

Our list is unbalanced.

Who replaces Luke Brown's lock down role on opposition small/medium dangerous forwards?
I would have thought

Jones
Hamill
Parnell
Michalanney
Doedee
(mcpherson is never playing AFL again)

Come on you know deep down we had to find a developing ruck and barnett was the obvious target. if not a developing KPD given mcasey return is about as likely as us getting a game for the club. personally liked the look of van es as did port but they got screwed there.

reid clearly didn't let hamish go near norths future 2nd

the good news out of tonight is that all of the 2023 draft capital is intact. who knows we may do better than st kilda next year and have improved our hand.

given we have 2023 First, 2024 First, and two seconds tied to north and saint kilda I wonder what we could trade in?

What’s the big deal? Presumably they didn’t think there were any viable options at our picks. Bit early in a rebuild to worry about needs with picks in the 40s.
they traded in to get that pick and we have no list spots thats the big deal

Pre-draft Mutineer wanted a developing ruck, actually he’s wanted one for 2-3 years but he won’t criticise Hamish so tries to justify the picks.

Jones gonna be primarily playing on a wing from now on IMO (either at AFL or SANFL level). Jury out on Pedlar whether he is a future mid or a half forward type (or even an AFL player at all), next year will tell us a lot. It will also tell a lot for Schoenberg, I can actually see him requesting a trade if he doesn't get his act totally into gear and doesn't get opportunities (would be unfortunate)

This was definitely the year to pick up at least one tall, though, but who knows, maybe we'll ask a tall to train on with us and make one an SSP to replace Seed/McAsey instead of Turner. I hope we do that now anyway, it'll mean the MSD last year was a waste but we don't need to add a player of Turner's type back to the list

Its almost a must now that they look to revert Himmelberg back to his junior days as a key defender.

With Fog, Walker, Thilthorpe we have enough big guys up front and Himmelberg can pinch hit there.

You are in such a cheerful mood tonight.

There is usually at least one poster having a dummy spit on draft night lol.
fair point just fed up mate

honestly dont think we nailed this but sure we got some bargain's because we basically used zero draft capital on our three picks but zero match winners

overall winners

collingwood-have a look at what they picked up-with their picks holy moly

st kilda also excellent job

west coast round out the top 3

Like many just don't understand why didn't get a developing ruck especially as there were many options from SA low in the draft and couple of them could develop into that tall defence we are problematic with .
Still hope maybe with Verrall still available who Bicks rates ,that just maybe we can LTI or delist McPherson or Seedsman to pick him .
Like the Dowling possibility but just hope doesn't become the new Matt Crouch with lots of touches no impact.

I actually really like our picks, so this isn't a criticism of the actual selections. I'm just getting a bit concerned about how adverse we are to taking developing talls. There were about 7 draftable SA kids around the 2m mark this year, which is pretty unheard of. One was even from our NGA. It's not like we don't have success with those types late or in the Rookie draft - Butts and ROB for example.

RoB
Strachan
Thilthorpe
Butts
Walker
Gollant
Himmelberg
McAsey
Borlase
Murray

Did we have an unbalanced list with too many talls last year?
Ideally we would have another tall on our list imo... looking at our 2 sides... but not a biggie as we will use top up players.

Particularly with McAsey in doubt.

At least Dowling hit the score boards and runs both ways so......

only walker, TT, butts are afl standard consistently though the rest is fringe

im crying myself to sleep 😂

Pretty disappointing draft night to be honest, there really seems to be no cohesion between Haggis and Reid. We obviously identified a need a way out, traded out of the draft and then tried to trade back in but couldn't and now have a couple of pick 50 mids to hang our hat on. Not saying that won't produce a half decent player but when we are going back 14 or so years to make a case for picking one that late, does not fill me full of hope.

And once again, we don't address our rucks which is baffling.
Dowling might look a decent pick down the track , very prolific mid ( one of most prolific in the draft ) if not a great kick ( this might improve in system ?)

Michaelanny and Rankine is a tick

Bond with future 3rd , not entirely sold but he will compete and give it a crack .. Not a make or break though . Will reserve judgement but think inside mid will be his role not defence

Would have liked Verrall in rookie draft but no apparent list spots , Knobel got taken reasonably early and would have been good if drifted further

Reports that Richmond were heavily into Dowling
