Are we seeing a shift towards more speculative prospects being given as much time outside an AFL list to show what they've got?

We've had a couple of main drafts now that have barely passed 60 picks since the introduction of the SSP and mid-season system.

Clubs have many more opportunities to assess speculative late draft types. They can get them as train on players for an SSP spot or wait and see if they show anything the following year and take them mid-season.

I reckon it's only a matter of time before the rookie draft becomes basically useless and only used for re-rookieing players (like we're doing) as clubs prefer to take SSPs instead

This was mooted a few years ago when clubs started adding pre-draftees to training squads etc

Maybe - instead of Turner - we found a way to add Philipou (for example) and get him into the system earlier

I think it's time to change the name of the rookie list to the supplementary list, that's what it actually is.

The departure lounge might be a better name. A lot of clubs using it as a bit of a dumping ground for players they want to delist.

"Ooops we signed this guy for too long and on too much money. No one else wants them, so how do we get some of his salary outside the cap?"

You’d rather a decent ruck than a donkey right? Unless the rest of your team is elite of course, do you think that’s us?

And Nankervis isn’t a donkey.

Who was the Hawks ruck?

Yeah - but it is the lowest of low priorities.

Hawks premiership ruck man - David Hale, Max Bailey, Jonathan Ceglar and Big Ben McEvoy. Nankervis is a good ruck man. They would have won with him or with a donkey.

This while downplaying of rucks I find really amusing. It’s the one position on the ground that’s solo usually and hence it gets highlighted.

Teams win a flag with an ok ruck, see not important.
Teams win a flag with a gun ruck, yeah but did you see the rest of the team, see not important.

Teams win flags with an average forward, defender or mid and yet no one ever says not to use draft capital on them.

I’ve always seen a gun ruck as like an extra midfielder - it’s obviously beneficial to the side, but if your midfield is elite, it’s not absolutely necessary

Geelong and Sydney both made the granny this year with average rucks, but both midfields run deep, which is a lot of the reason why they were so successful

You can carry a few average role players in a great team - you just have to make sure most of your best 22’s depth is of top shelf quality

Given our midfield is far from elite, a decent ruck wouldn’t go astray

And this is the thing - we have a league-average ruck (ROB isn’t crap, but he isn’t exactly good right now either) and a below-average midfield. Hence we’re struggling

Given ROB’s realistically going to spend another four years in our best 22 (barring a trade for a better ruck), the midfield development needs to be a primary focus. It’s getting there, but it’s got a way to go

If the AFL adopt the SANFL last touch out of bounds rule between the 50m arcs the role of the ruck man will change again

There will be less stoppages and rucks will play more like an extra mid, this rule change may convince the club to play RT more as a ruck
