Yeah, bit of a do-nothing pick. I guess delisting him once wasn't enough, they want to give him the bad news again next year as well.

I think it's time to change the name of the rookie list to the supplementary list, that's what it actually is.
It's time to just merge the rookie & main lists.

so ESPN only rated melbourne worse than our draft effort

I don't get the ratings, we had pick 2 and 3, picked up someone who had a bad knee injury and a father son nobody bid on and he gave us an A rating?

I am glad we had pick 2 and 3 but it wasn't great drafting, it was the unfortunate result of losing JHF and finishing last again. I think good or bad should be based on how well you did with what you had.

That's because Knightmare didn't rated MM (didn't even have him in his top 50) and I don't know his reasoning around the bid points given we always had to offer pick 46 and later picks whether the bid came in at 16 or mid 20s (most mock draft had him around this mark) and also he thinks Bond was drafted as a midfielder, clearly doesn't have enough intel on Keeler given both SA clubs didn't draft him and isn't Dowling the tall midfielder we need which he mentioned?

Rationale: With Adelaide matching bids on father-son Max Michalanney (the son of Jim) inside the first round, the Crows needed to spend much more than they would have liked. While Michalanney has earned his admirers, even after applying a discount, a first-round bid is a lot to match points on for Michalanney.

Adelaide traded for picks 43 and 50 respectively, slightly weakening their 2023 draft position in the process. The major question for the Crows around the selections of Billy Dowling and Hugh Bond is whether or not they offer something different for the Crows. Dowling is a suitable list fit on the outside and can arguably fit a need as a productive goalkicking outside midfielder. Hugh Bond on the other hand is yet another competitive ball winning inside midfielder at 185cm who fails to add something different to what the Crows already have; they continue to lack a taller midfielder or midfielders with a different mix of strengths.

Adelaide's other arguably questionable decision was their choice not to nominate Isaac Keeler as a Next-Generation Academy prospect. The Crows, as things worked out with their trading, could have matched bids on the athletic key forward and ruckman had they nominated him and taken him as their third selection. This would have arguably made more sense than the competitive and industrious midfielder in Hugh Bond who offers more of the same.

Do not care about developing rucks. This should be the easiest position to target in a trade. I don't think it's the end of the world carrying just rob and Strachan over the next couple of years (but I don't rate ruck as a high value position) while we're still not contending. Trade in when we need to.

I think there's an argument for not getting a developing KPD. Butts so far is the only genuine key back to show he's got it. Murray and Worrell have shown good signs and should be playing full time next year. After that we have nothing so would be relying on Doedee if one of these goes down and maybe Michalaney in a few years.

I terms of our last two picks, we went with 2 speculative mids (i.e not rated top end) when we arguably have quite a lot of these young types already that likely won't be top end (Berry, Pedlar, Schoenberg and Taylor). You want Soligo in there, who imo does have the potential to be top end. Not including the incumbents (laird and Keays), you've got Soligo, Berry, Schoenberg, Pedlar, Taylor, Dowling, Bond all around the same age looking for midfield time. That's not including getting minutes into Rankine and Rachele (again similar age). That's also not including the fact that we still need to trade in a top end mid. So yeah while I'm not bagging the two last picks, have we loaded up too much on the same area of the ground in the same age bracket (still with a gaping hole elite prospect)?

I think our strategy next year should be to use our 1st and 2nd picks (with a 2nd round remaining) to target a high end 21-25yo mid alone or a high end mid and an okay established kpd. If just a high end mid, target a decent established KPD the year after.

Don’t know much about Bond but given he had a run as a lock down defender and is tough I am hoping he is a bit Luke Brown with Brayden Maynard toughness (not that Brown was soft)

Fills a definite need in that area - I am not quite convinced on Jones and Parnell due to size

The no ruckman thing was interesting.

Some clubs (like port) seem to like having 3-4-5 list spots used on ruckmen.

We seem to like to have minimal amounts of ruckmen. In years gone by it hasn't borne much fruit but with us needing a good midfield I don't mind us stocking up a bit there, to try and get a good rotation and a few more stabs brings more chance of those top players. We seem to have adopted a more agressive play them early and cut them early postion too relative to historical crows. I think if we do that over the next two years then hopefully we get our mids sorted and can then bring in the next gen ruckmen. I am keen to see Bond as we seem to be doing well with our strategy of picking the flying under the radar 180ish cm victorian mid. Soligo looks like he'll turn out first rate. Berry and Taylor both have potential.

The other thing is maybe we see TT as the next gen ruckman, but then either we think Berg will come good as a key forward, or we need to find another key forward (and why didn't we do that this draft??). Maybe the same thing applies as with the ruckmen. TBF key forwards didn't seem to be very present in this draft (whereas rucks did) and so perhaps they are holding off for a year.

Lol, weakened our 2023 draft?

We still have our 1st rounder & 2x2nd rounders, including North's!

We managed to bring in 2x1st round players Rankine & MM & have a stronger than starting position for our 2023 draft.

ADELAIDE CROWS

Picks (at start of the draft):
46, 56, 59

Selections: Max Michalanney (17), Billy Dowling (43), Hugh Bond (50)

For a team that wasn’t expected to play a big role, the Crows were mightily active. They were well prepared for a first-round bid on father-son gun defender Michalanney, who has the ability to play on both tall and small forwards. Missed out on getting back into the second round, but struck a deal with the Suns to get their hands on local ball magnet Dowling, who’ll add midfield depth. They then traded in to get their hands on inside midfielder Bond. Picks 46, 56 and 59 turned into 17, 43 and 50.

Grade: C+

Picks 46, 56 and 59 turned into 17, 43 and 50.

How is that C+?

Are you sure his rationale is solid? It read like all over the place.
what was all over place?

he clearly didn't understand how little if anything we gave up to get pick 43 but other than that he got it

no high priority needs met

i can only deduce
1. mcasey is fine, returning and will crack into the 22
2. thilthorpe is our future 1R with himmelberg the fwd ruck
3. crouch hately sloane seed will all be gone this time next year

We definitely see Thilthorpe as the elite ruckman who can kick 2-3 goals when resting forward, just look at the game against Collingwood as what he can deliver leading the ruck and resting forward and Berry isn't classified as potential anymore. Gollant can actually play tall.

He didn't have MM on his top 50 but said "While Michalanney has earned his admirers, even after applying a discount, a first-round bid is a lot to match points on for Michalanney", we always had to use pick 46 (I'm guessing he thought MM would be around this mark lol) and those later picks whether the bid came in at 17 or mid 20s which was where MM was projected to go. Then mentioned Keeler when both SA clubs passed on him and Dowling as an outside mid but he's the tall midfielder we needed which he then mentioned was missing after selecting Bond....that's what I mean by all over the place.
