Look I don’t really care what the media analysts say, managing to keep a first round pick whilst upgrading our latter two picks, only at the cost of a Pies 3rd and a switch of 2nds with a team that finished just two places above us last year, is a pretty decent result, given what we were working with

Yes, we could’ve addressed a few other needs, but we did that at the McAsey pick, too, and look how that’s turned out. It’s not always the right thing to do, especially if you don’t rate any player of a particular position at the pick they were drafted at

That said, I’m not saying those needs don’t need to be addressed. We have a way to go in regards to building the quality and balance of our list

He didn't have MM on his top 50 but said "While Michalanney has earned his admirers, even after applying a discount, a first-round bid is a lot to match points on for Michalanney", we always had to use pick 46 (I'm guessing he thought MM would be around this mark lol) and those later picks whether the bid came in at 17 or mid 20s which was where MM was projected to go. Then mentioned Keeler when both SA clubs passed on him and Dowling as an outside mid but he's the tall midfielder we needed which he then mentioned was missing after selecting Bond....that's what I mean by all over the place.
thats what i meant he didnt understand the picks used but so what the outcome is the same

No list needs really met other than rankine in trade

The no ruckman thing was interesting.

Some clubs (like port) seem to like having 3-4-5 list spots used on ruckmen.

We seem to like to have minimal amounts of ruckmen. In years gone by it hasn't borne much fruit but with us needing a good midfield I don't mind us stocking up a bit there, to try and get a good rotation and a few more stabs brings more chance of those top players. We seem to have adopted a more agressive play them early and cut them early postion too relative to historical crows. I think if we do that over the next two years then hopefully we get our mids sorted and can then bring in the next gen ruckmen. I am keen to see Bond as we seem to be doing well with our strategy of picking the flying under the radar 180ish cm victorian mid. Soligo looks like he'll turn out first rate. Berry and Taylor both have potential.

The other thing is maybe we see TT as the next gen ruckman, but then either we think Berg will come good as a key forward, or we need to find another key forward (and why didn't we do that this draft??). Maybe the same thing applies as with the ruckmen. TBF key forwards didn't seem to be very present in this draft (whereas rucks did) and so perhaps they are holding off for a year.
PA's SANFL side is going to be filled with ruckmen.

We run 5 midfielder and have 15 on our list.
So about ten wont make it
Jones and McHenry haven't become midfielders after being selected first round
Gallucci, Hately, Milera haven't made it

That's the problem, it's like throwing 15 darts at a board and hoping a couple hit the bullseye
Instead of targeting prime mids with your top picks
I don't mind throwing darts at the dart board until we have the picks to target a prime mid. Not every prime mid is taken in the top 5.

I think the Thilthorpe and Rankine investments were the correct decisions and we've spent picks 9 and 11 on mids. That really just leaves the McAsey decision which, as bad as it has turned out, realistically can only set us back 1 year.

But, as every hopelessly optimistic fan says, there is sure to be a gun mid at our first round pick/ trade next year and all of our problems will be solved.

Nah, pure stupidity as no ability to actually analyse what occurred.
Failed to really appreciate the benefit also of us getting MM with a 1st rounder and the impact that has on the Crows in the next years, ie freeing up our ability to trade out our 1sts.

remember we understand every nuance for our team that was done

he is analysing 18 clubs at not so much depth cut him so slack but yes he is a dick

People rating our draft poorly (and other teams) seem to rate them because we didn't get a top 5 quality pick, when we in fact did not have a top 5 pick to use, as opposed to teams that did and were rated well
A ruck is not an immediate need
Got a big bodied mid who looks promising
Got a versatile mid sized def who is a father son
Got what i think will be a lock down defender or tagger. Yeah could've gone elsewhere here maybe
Got elite talent Rankine as well don't forget
Can't get elite mids when your best pick at the start of the draft is a 3rd rounder

because needs were not met
What needs, all year it was our Midfield that failed,
We strengthen our midfield, with Rankine, Dowling and Bond. All have a high chance of playing AFL in 2023.

In 2023 We did not need a developing Ruck, we did need a developing tall Defender or Forward,
We need Players with a difference we got one.
We needed strong quick Mids with some size, and aggression we got 2 one is a known entity for finding the Football.
All these players are AFL-ready and will get game time in 2023
As a bonus, we may have picked a 10-year versatile defender. Who will most likely be AFL ready in 2024

So tell me what needs were not met and if you say Ruck then tell me who could we have gotten that would be AFL-ready in 2023 I believe you would struggle to find one that would get a game in 2024.

Throwing a lot of darts is absolutely the right thing to do but you also want a few goes standing up close and also the main thing is you want to be good at darts

So for our itk posters, did we end up with who we wanted?
No other than Rankine, we tried to get a deal done for Phillipou but no buyers were available with what we put on the table 2023 1st and our Roos 2023 2nd round pick, we may have been able to swing a deal for Barnett if Sydney didn't force us to bid earlier than was generally thought it would come for MM/ Seems Dowling was our fall back option if we couldn't get Phillipou and obviosly we rated Hugh Bond a fair bit above where he was available.

Whilst think club did great job with trades to get father son sorted and then especially to move 79 to 43 for what could be very minimal as don't see GC finishing in the 8 and probably around same as us.
But although my knowledge of majority of these players in draft is minimal and formed a lot by more informed posters etc and have to trust club with the picks we took as all have attributes to be successful .
But just can't get away from feeling again we haven't covered for the future ,where we are not only low on KPP and rucks but certainly lacking in quality .
Especially when there were a few in draft and many from SA available very low in draft .
A key factor is that KPP is a tough role and you have to be prepared to create options to finally be successful finding the KPP to win you games.
Also to me this mass recruiting of mid types clearly shows they don't have faith in own recruiting by continuing recruiting more and more mids.
You can only play so many in AFL team each week and what happens to talented kids don't get opportunity.
