Drafted James Worpel while Clarko was there.....

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Kicking
  • Agility
Worpel has two glaring improvements which hinder him from going to the next level. The cause for concern with his game is his kicking which as previously mentioned is poor, even for an inside midfielder. But rather than just quote the stats, there are technical aspects to his low efficiency. Most of his kicks often come under pressure, or when he does win the ball, sometimes his kicking action sees him off balance and he puts too much of an emphasis on penetration rather than trying to hit up an easier target. But putting an emphasis on penetration, he leans back on his kick, forcing it to loop or float which enables opponents to have a greater chance of spoiling, or getting to the ball drop. If he can take an extra second or two to put more emphasis on placement rather than penetration I dare say his kicking will improve.
Worpel wasnt exactly a first rounder though..

He was taken at pick 45..

He was about all that was left that was half decent..

I would be hesitant to trade out future picks now having watched the first two rounds.
Might be two steps back to go forward required and whilst in principal yes it would be good to have multiple elite talents coming through this offseason, the risk is end of next year we are still bottom 4 and we miss out on a sure fire gun that is better than this year's trade in.
yeah its always a risk...but i think with the amount of high end youth we have brought in recently, fearing we are trading out a high pick next year if we trade it in this year to get more 1st round talent this year needs to take a back seat as we shouldn't look to kick the can down the road on this rebuild imo. I suppose what I am proposing is load up now and make this is the last year we hit the draft hard and then after that, look to acquire the needs based through the trade period.

If you actually cared to look at Hawthorn's drafting throughout Clarkson's tenure you'll be very surprised how many times they didn't actually use a 1st round pick on a draftee especially in the latter years.

There's one thing Clarkson's not...a development coach.

I wouldnt be..

I’d have every pick we have on the table.

We need elite ball users all over the ground but especially in our midfield. Experienced and proven ones.

And we need them right now.. not in a couple of years from now which it what it takes for a young drafted player to develop to full AFL readiness.

We could hold onto our top draft picks this year and use them in the draft and get anything. Or we could put them on the table and hopefully pick up some proven and experienced talent.

We also need to go hard at Free Agents. Very ****n hard.

And nearly everyone of our players apart from obviously thilly, Dawson, Cook, Butts and Rachele should be considered “available” if required as trade bait.

The list is poor and full of holes. And the problem is that its mostly the older experienced players that are the worst of them!.

The rebuild is spluttering but it all starts with the midfield..

If your midfield is garbage and the oppositions midfield gets to do as it pleases… your forward and defensive lines are going to struggle regardless of how good the players you have in those lines are..

That was after he had already built his team and continued to add to it to stay up the top

Do any of us actually trust Hamish with this draft? Was watching the Lloyd comments just now, and he is right - we have basically stuffed up every draft since 2014 (with the exception of last year). While I know the club has had its head in the sand the last few years, surely the new coaching and management group can see Hamish’s performance has been below poor and a new era is needed??

What about this year? - Rachele looks like he will be a star of the comp in years to come

Nope, the bulk of the rebuild was done prior to Clarkson coming on board
You sure about that? I’ve only had a quick look but Franklin, Roughead, Lewis and Birchall were all under Clarkson. Mitchell was there before that. Then throw in Breust etc and he was there for the recruitment of some key players

You honestly believe Clarko had input into those selections having been appointed a month earlier, that credit goes to Gary Bucenara not Clarko who'd been working as an assistant coach at Port at the time.

I reckon Hamish or any recruiter would have gone alright with the high end picks the Hawks had at their disposal in 2004/5 not to mention the high end priority picks the AFL gifted them.

They all weren’t in Clarkos first year and you said the team was built before him which wasn’t true

Watching some SANFL U16's footy this morning, I'm pretty sure we'll have another Draper on an AFL list in 2 years time, Arlo's brother Sid looks a natural footballer that just finds the footy whether playing on ball or around goals.

Anyone with a SANFL live pass I can recommend watching the WWT vs North Adelaide game currently being played.
Quite a few of the SA lads that will be in draft contention at season's end are playing. Our NGA Isaac Keeler very quiet first half.

Matteas Phillipou should be of particular interest might just be that taller midfielder that can hit the scoreboard regularly we need.

North
#5 Isaac Keeler - Tall Forward/Ruck
#14 Billy Dowling - Big bodied Mid/forward
#25 Max Blacker - Small mid/forward/utility

WWT
#24 Adam D'Alioa - big bodied inside mid
#25 Matteas Phillipou - tall mid/forward.
#30 Jonte Hunter-Price - Tall Ruck/Forward

The Roosters Tall Ruck/Forward Jack Hodges swapping between ruck and forward with Keeler looks to have some really nice AFL type attributes as well, very athletic with a nice leap and decent enough skills another to keep an eye on throughout the year with several of the talls on our current list under serious review.

Wouldn’t the development come after they are drafted?
How can you say hes not a development coach when he developed that team?

And one lad you mentioned earlier, Nick Sadler, made his league debut for Sturt this week end - which is an excellent effort first up. 7 touches and a goal on debut.

This is a high quality individual, lovely young lad. Recall seeing him playing year 7 footy for Pembroke! Deserves every success.

Yep skills wise Nick is the pick of the SA boys just not sure where his best spot in the AFL will be yet.

Anyone ever sit there and do a re-draft from the past 6 years or so?
2016 Draft i would have went with: (mind you, hindsight is great hey?)
Pick 15 - Tim English
Pick 44- Jack Graham
Pick 51- Quinton Narkle
Pick 62 - Mitchell Lewis

2017:
Pick 12- Oscar Allen
Pick 40- James Worpel

2018:
Pick 9- Zak Butters
Pick 16- Xavier Duursma
Pick 30 - Lauchy Scholl
Pick 64- Darcy Fort

2019:
Pick 6- Caleb Serong
Pick 24- Harry Shoenberg
Pick 28- Harrison Jones
Pick 42- Lauchlyn Gollant
Pick 48- Michael Frederick.

Butters and Serong make us instantly better but I don't care for Duursma.

That McAsey call could be the biggest blunder. I didn't mind the Jones pick at the time as he looked the goods as a junior mid to that point. McAsey looked a decent kpd prospect, but still speculative at pick 6.

There was nothing speculative about McCasey at 6.
