There are a few players of interest at GWS who come out of contract next year, including Lachie Ash, Tom Green, Leek Aleer, Harry Himmelberg, Jacob Wehr

One player we should be having a massive crack at, that's been behind the GWS midfield pecking order, is Lachie Ash, who is being used as a running defender and as a tagger through the midfield. I have a feeling that the tagging role was created for him to at least 'get him in' to the midfield rotation. With Hopper, Bruhn and Taranto seeing the exit door, he may be provided with differing midfield role opportunities.

I was always under the impression that a lot of people saw him as an outside midfielder, particularly with his speed, run and carry.

Appears to be great mates with Josh Rachele, both being Shepparton Swans products. (Is currently taking part in a Skills training session, with both Rachele and Ash the main guests for the program)

Surely we can offer him $$'s and more opportunity for an outside midfield role. I would be throwing the kitchen sink at him. Geelong are the masters of picking players up like Bruhn without having to put the development into them, and bringing Ash into the club would be more desirable to me next year than hitting the draft. Bring ready made players into the squad will only accelerate our rebuild.

What frustrates me is that Richmond can prize a player like Hopper out before his contract is up. What are we doing??

We are looking at a huge player turnover next year, with a lot of players either out of contract and moving on to other clubs or being delisted.
We should be freeing up a lot of salary cap space next year, we should be moving up the ladder, there should be list space, our younger players should be developing nicely and we should be progressing our game plan.

I can't help but feel next years trade period might be the most important in our history, and a close to Top 8 finish will be crucial in attracting talent to the club.

By Justin Reid's own mouth, we are looking at midfield quality (both outside midfield run and an attacking big bodied mid) and 'support behind the ball', which i would take as being a KPD, in terms of adding quality to the squad.

Who is out of contract next year that people would be looking at?

I'd like to include Finn Callaghan in that conversation. Could be the premium mid we need.

Yeah absolutely, although i always thought he'd be a chance to head back to Victoria at the first opportunity, considering he was touted as a flight risk in his draft year.

Spare a thought for Western Bulldogs who have a whopping 24 players out of contract next year!

Could be interesting if they miss finals & Beveridge gets sacked...

I think we let both him and Walker have a period where they were encouraged to carry too much weight - not fat, but too solid. They were also being coached to go body to body with their defender far too often.

A different physical program, and - frankly - a far better approach from the forwards coach put both of them on a path towards drastic improvement.

Not just the forwards coach, Nix as well. The kick as deep as possible to a contest strategy to make rebounding more difficult was the cause of the body to body issue. Allowing entries to be directed to Fog’s leads was a huge difference. He took his chances and then the belief came. It can’t be easy second guessing yourself as a forward. Tex isn’t impacted because he’s a gun and runs the show, but the youngins coming through it’s much harder for.

I haven’t given up, but there’s not a shred of confidence. It’s pure hope based on a few things he did in 2020, everything else since then probably should have wiped that from memory.
You have to say Frampton looked the much better players, when switched to DEF .....we therefore shouldn't judge McAsey so hard, when he's obviously been played out of position all year, in 2022

If you watch his games closely this year .....you'll see he has a lot of aspects to his game ....a good thinker

Is he a certainty, no ! ......gotta big PS in front of him ......but a dud, he's not

Frampton looked a much better defender and forward than McAsey has at either end in the SANFL.
