Why not both?

It mirrors my statement of Newman 90%, Weits & Young 100% in the defensive half, while Williams, Doc, Boyd, Plowman (played the Gov role), spent 20% or more in attacking half.

So will ask again, why are you highlighting Williams having more score involvements, only 1 stat, when they play different backline roles

Why not include tackles, 1%ers, etc, you know, defensive stats

If you want to compare Williams to another defender, compare him to Doc, not Newman

While everyone was up and about at the end of the Hawthorn game, singing the song and celebrating, I was sitting there annoyed and slightly relieved.
We missed an opportunity to pounce and even though we won, I wasn't happy. I think I'm getting my footy vibe back. I like it. :p
In case this wasn't largely said in jest, shelve that discontent and celebrate the moment next time - it's why we watch the game.

Plenty of time left in the season. He’s actually improving in the vfl. While our senior mids keep winning contested possesions and inside 50s it’s hard to see how he gets in.

Weirdly they keep playing Kennedy on massively low minutes. Amazing really. Played 2.5 quarters against Hawks.

Re: Kennedy

I had to check to confirm. 73%, 73%, 66% game time. Only one other mid played game time than him in a given game, Setterfield 71% in round 1.

Is this a strategic thing because he is such a burst type? Are we saving him a lot for Cripps to get a rest? Or is it a tank thing?

Either way, for him to get the numbers he does with less game time, it certainly seems to be working.

Paddy Dow knocking on the door again.

30 touches, 15 clearances and 2 goals in the VFL.

Motlop with 4 goals also.

Not a spot for them yet though.

Fisher is probably the one looking over his shoulder at the moment with those two.

Saad in obvs.

Not sure TDK is needed. Slippery deck in QLD so it might suit Martin more, and JSOS can pinch in the ruck.

We need to get paddy Dow into the side, he has been knocking the door down for the last three games. I would hate to lose him to another club because of lack of opportunity.

He's not getting traded mid season.

Hold him out for 3 months or more if that's what it takes to get his defensive workrate up.

Selection shouldn't be about pandering to players who want senior opportunities, it's about selecting the group of players best able to execute the gameplan.

I hope Dow gets a run this week, I think I have seen him BOG 3 weeks in a row now (I think). Hope he gets rewarded for his form/efforts etc.
I haven’t seen ressies game. How is Dow going in terms of his main deficiency...defensive running tackling etc?

I think if Dow improves his defensive output he more than likely will be elevated because his burst speed adds a point of difference to our midfield group.

I like that Dow is showing progress but don't really think we have to get him in.

Voss said he is competing with 2 others for the spot he can play. Who in the midfield would we drop?

What message does it send to the person (& the rest of the team) removed, when their form is good and we are winning?

I would much prefer Dow is made to wait for his opportunity.

Short of a mid in the 1s playing poorly for a few weeks, and they aren't/haven't yet, Dow needs to keeping building his portfolio....

I haven’t been watching the VFL games, just reading the reports which have read very well about him. I think he’s getting a goal or two each game as well.
I can’t see him pushing a mid out at this point & agree with the poster who wrote above it wouldn’t be fair to do that to someone in the ones who is contributing atm.
I was thinking perhaps the double ruck combo might be less important up on the very dewy Gold Coast (no pun intended). Perhaps we rest Pitto for a week if his back is indeed sore and get Dow in that way?
Just an idea. I think Voss will be more bold
With team moves than Teague used to be

One thing I did notice from last week's game especially second half, was the Hawks seemed to rebound pretty easily from the half back line...even just inside our forward 50. We had so many entries but the ball seemed to come out without much pressure.

Any chance when Stocker is fit, he could come in and rotate through the half forward line as a semi-defensive forward? We really need to keep the ball in our forward 50 longer.

Tends to happen when you've got an unbalanced forward line. Second half the 3 talls kept running into each other. We completely lost the structure required to play with 3 talls.

That and Owies spent the second half nowhere near the drop of the ball. Fisher fumbled every time and durdin was playing too deep. Was easy as shit for the hawks to walk it out with Mckay and Curnow or TDK taking each other out.

Martin would have helped.

And our big forwards were jumping against each other (as others have said).

Losing saad and mcgovern last week main issue. Thought doc was brilliant in their absence, but no else really covered the offensive drive.
Williams tried, when we were stuck going down the line long he made an effort to run carry and hit up a target down the corridor. Underrated performance imo

27 touches, 7 rebound 50s and 0 turnovers.

Initial thoughts on changes.

I'd probably make two but feel we'll likely just go with one, injury permitting.

In - Saad
Out - Boyd

Straightforward upgrade if Saad is good to go. Boyd was overawed by the occasion.

If it were up to me I'd make one further change with one of the ruckmen to make way. I am hopeful Pitto has pulled through OK, in which case it would be TDK dropping down to the reserves.

Am a big fan of Tom but he looked completely exhausted on the weekend and has barely fired a shot this season. He's developing nicely but still has a way to go and before people jump up and down saying he needs to be developed - you're right, but there's scope to do that at VFL level also.

We know he's a terrific athlete but he needs to continue to work on his forward craft because right now it's just not there. I'd give him a few weeks to play almost exclusively forward and hopefully he can get his hands on the ball and his confidence back up.

Martin to come into the 22 at his expense and hopefully light it up against his old side.

B: Saad - Young - Plowman
HB: Williams - Weitering - Newman
C: Setterfield - Cripps - O'Brien
HF: Martin - Curnow - Walsh
F: Owies - McKay - Durdin
R: Pittonet / TDK - Cerra - Hewett
Int: Kennedy - Docherty - Silvagni - Fisher
Sub: Fogarty / Williamson

Looks pretty good to me.

Need to focus on a 4 quarter effort of control in this one. Our first 3 we've had control for half the game and by fortune in those periods when we've scored, we've scored big and in quick succession. You don't often win games of footy by losing 3 quarters like we did against the Hawks, usually we've been the ones to permit teams to do that to us.

Coaches need to ensure players heads are in the game, our Fab 5 gel (they've only had the one game together) and identify how to get them involved with scoring again when our forwards are not firing like they did in round 1.

Suns can be schizophrenic and Rowell, Anderson, Miller and Swallow if they all fire will be a handful, and that ever I play well against Carlton, Sexton is always bobbing up. Also Casboult may have something to prove and I can see him going kamikaze in this one and crashing and bashing his way through any player in his path.

Plowman not going anywhere... Weiterbot power extreme, Doc, Plowman, Williams and Saad, with McGov/Young/McD as the rest (pending on fitness) are beginning to gel and need continuity. Plowman for some of his faults, he's resilient, generally composed and experienced.

It’s looking to be quite dry on Sunday atm so it might not quite be the grease game we expected.

If Pittonet is injured (didn’t look great at the end of the game) then TDK is a must.
