Obvious change for me, health permitting, is Saad for Boyd.

If McGovern was available, then I think Plow would be out, but as it is, Plow will most likely play.

My question: If Martin comes in (which I think he will), who would be the out? I think both LoB and Setterfield are playing their roles, and it I can't see them as outs. Likewise Durdin and Owies. Some have suggested TDK (with perhaps a combo of JSOS and Young as relief rucks), and I can see the rationale given it will be something akin to wet weather footy. But again, with their ruck combination of Witts, Chol (200 cm), and Levi (200 cm), I can see an advantage in having TDK.

Noice to be winning, and club having these selection decisions...

I'd like to see Walsh pushed out to the wing to play in the wide open spaces, while giving Dow a chance on the inside as the forward facing mid ready to burst out with the other 3 circling/tackling. Walsh looked a bit stressed in the bustle yesterday and I think he would get a lot out of a week with more uncontested ball. He can then float in and out of the packs as he chooses, have 30+ possies and maybe kick a couple of snags.

Give LOB or Setters a break for a week. Just to give it a go.

Said it before I genuinely think he's adapting to being in a good side. He gets the pill and has options galore. In the past he gets the pill and his task was simple - do it all himself and take the best option.

I think this year there will be much less of the move him, to squeeze in this guy, and then shuffle this guy down here.

Voss said players are only competing with a couple of others for their spots.

Who is Martin competing with in the HFF role..most likely Fisher, Fog

Initial thoughts on changes.

I'd probably make two but feel we'll likely just go with one, injury permitting.

In - Saad
Out - Boyd

Straightforward upgrade if Saad is good to go. Boyd was overawed by the occasion.

If it were up to me I'd make one further change with one of the ruckmen to make way. I am hopeful Pitto has pulled through OK, in which case it would be TDK dropping down to the reserves.

Am a big fan of Tom but he looked completely exhausted on the weekend and has barely fired a shot this season. He's developing nicely but still has a way to go and before people jump up and down saying he needs to be developed - you're right, but there's scope to do that at VFL level also.

We know he's a terrific athlete but he needs to continue to work on his forward craft because right now it's just not there. I'd give him a few weeks to play almost exclusively forward and hopefully he can get his hands on the ball and his confidence back up.

Martin to come into the 22 at his expense and hopefully light it up against his old side.

B: Saad - Young - Plowman
HB: Williams - Weitering - Newman
C: Setterfield - Cripps - O'Brien
HF: Martin - Curnow - Walsh
F: Owies - McKay - Durdin
R: Pittonet / TDK - Cerra - Hewett
Int: Kennedy - Docherty - Silvagni - Fisher
Sub: Fogarty / Williamson

Looks pretty good to me.

As Arrow said, they'll play Witts, Chol and Levi.

We need 2 rucks (if Pitto's fit).

If Pitto doesn't get up, would strongly consider Markov...

Saad's kicking length after his carry is something we missed against the Hawks. Once the Hawks pushed players back after halftime to fill our HF space, the corridors closed and the running lanes for our forwards were limited.

get the ball to Saad and dare I say it LOB at all costs. LOB kick on the run to the top of the square against the Hawks was absolute quality...

We moved the ball too slowly after Q1.

Almost like we were trying to protect the lead....which didn't work out so well.

We need two players to contest the centre bounce. We do not need two designated ruckmen.

Witts is their #1 and is very good. We have one of Pittonet (hopefully) or TDK to go up against him.

Chol averages 9 hitouts per game and spends most of his time forward.

Casboult averages the same number of hitouts as Lachie Fogarty.

It’s looking to be quite dry on Sunday atm so it might not quite be the grease game we expected.

If Pittonet is injured (didn’t look great at the end of the game) then TDK is a must.
40mm in the proceeding 2 days isn't exactly going to be a quick track. Yes there might not be much more than a shower on Sunday but QLD loves a good old afternoon flash storm.

Desperately need Pitt to combat Witts.

Suspect we'll see even less from TDK on a soft track.

Largely against many changes, the easy one is Saad for Boyd.

But I want Martin back in. Could we go Martin in for TDK, and OMac in for Plowman (his game was fine, but seems he is behind others at the moment).

Play the three talls in the backline but let Weiters off the chain as an interceptor? Then OMac can play 2nd ruck?

That was due to positioning changes by the Hawks mids. Forced us to change the angles, this is the plan B issue that has come up in each game so far. More run by the HBF's (Saad, Williams) with forward handballs draws the defensive mids up the ground. We have that in our game styles but didn't use it when the Hawks dropped the mids back to fold our HF line...

My take on Round 4 selections are simple and unoriginal.

Changes
Saad for Boyd
- has to happen. Boyd had been great at VFL but was behind the pace on debut. Will get another chance later this year.
Martin for TDK/Pitto - with Jack firing up forward, TDK is superfluous and not giving us enough. Bring Jack back in against his former side to run a little smaller. If Pitto is injured, TDK gets the reprieve. Jack / Young to support in the ruck.

Other considerations
Stocker
to have one more game in the twos before coming back in for (likely) Plow.
Motlop to earn a debut with another performance like that :fire: Pressure is on Owies, Durdin and Fisher to hold their spot.
Dow is doing everything and more in the VFL but won't be called up unless one of our top 5 goes down. He simply cannot play wing or any other position better than who we have now, so needs to bide his time. Will get a chance later this year but for now, LOB, Setters and (definitely) Kennedy are doing their jobs and holding him out.

Hawthorn were able to hit the long pass onto the center of the ground because both McGovern and Saad were missing - both these blokes have featured in spoiling and intercept marking that type of play - Hawthorn were able to get through the Carlton press via higher risk kicks which went uncontested or poorly contested - that is why they were able to claw their way back into the game and it made for frustrating watching - because it was repeated successfully on too many occasions.

The Carlton players all relaxed too much after achieving the 40 point lead and Hawthorn were able to win enough contested ball to make these plays- all rebounding from defensive positions - I don't think Carlton can feel confident about its game plan until the team starts putting sides away with big scores - that one point win should be a lesson top both players and coaches.

An intercepting defender is a vital piece of teh game plan which needs addressing now that McGovern is out ( again) for an extended period ( again) - who is that going to be if Pittonet is out and TDK is teh main ruck against Wicks....

So, this is another game where the team have a chance to show us they are no longer the Carlton of old. We are going to go into this game as clear favourites....and the Carlton of the last 10-15 years would lose this game by 4 goals.

Lets see if the side have addressed the issue of the last few weeks with massive lapses in defensive pressure and structure that allowed Bulldogs/Hawks to get back into the game.

Russell.
Nut sure if pointing at ribs or side muscle.
He was slow getting up at times in the last quarter and had trouble moving a few times. Hoping for the best for him.

I don't know why Kemp is not being played at centre half back in the reserves as an option should we need him as he would have been very handy on Sunday particularly with his ability to run out of defence and create

Opportunity beckons for Parks, provided he's training as the attacking 3rd tall - his physicality will already have ticked boxes for Voss & Hamill

The lesser amount of changes, the better IMO. Let our boys get as comfortable playing together as possible. I think these will be the changes:

Boyd out for Saad (if Saad is right to go post COVID - if he indeed caught it - this is an obvious decision)
MAYBE one of TDK/Fisher out for Martin. Fisher to sub in his case.

Plowman stays in for now, we need that back up defensive option on the bench. Agree with others - just a matter of game fitness for Stocker to regain his position in the back pocket.

Some strange calls earlier in the thread re Williams? He was named in our bests on the weekend just gone... I thought he had one of his better games for us. His fitness is much improved.

Just on Fish - I am a huge fan of what this bloke can do. Outside of maybe Cripps, he has the best fwd handball at our club. Almost certain he gave the fwd handball to SOS to win the game on the weekend. I don't think he is out of the side yet. Martin may take his place based off impact and his marking ability.

While Owies may not be as talented as Durdin, he fully makes up for in workrate. He does not stop working - and we need players like this. Let Motlop buy his time, earn his stripes in the VFL. We all know he will be in our fwd line sooner rather than later, but we can't take that workrate out of our fwd line just yet.

We must take this crew very seriously. They torched us in the midfield last year and those guns are still there plus Rowell. They pushed Dees very very hard up there a few weeks ago, must bring absolute A game.

Strangely though, we play better against them when we play them away so I hope the trend continues.
It's interesting. I had a look at the Sun's board and most there are of the opinion that they have no chance and we are going pump them.

Whereas our supporters are of the opinion that we need to take them seriously.

I think taking them seriously is the right approach.

right now I would do a mid season trade with Dow for any of the following:
1) a Ruck/Forward who can take a grab and kick a goal
2) a key back, or
3) a lock down small/mid defender

I would love him to prove me wrong but I think right now we are filling roles in our side in 2 & 3 and he ain’t either of them and he ain’t done anything special the last 2 years in the inside mid role and the guys currently doing that job are currently the toast of the town
Straight swap for Ben McKay. NM need better players coming out of the middle and we desperately need another KPD

Imagine the McKay bros playing for the next 10 years at the Blues in opposite goal-squares every week. Delicious.
