right now I would do a mid season trade with Dow for any of the following:
1) a Ruck/Forward who can take a grab and kick a goal
2) a key back, or
3) a lock down small/mid defender

I would love him to prove me wrong but I think right now we are filling roles in our side in 2 & 3 and he ain’t either of them and he ain’t done anything special the last 2 years in the inside mid role and the guys currently doing that job are currently the toast of the town

Straight swap for Ben McKay. NM need better players coming out of the middle and we desperately need another KPD

Imagine the McKay bros playing for the next 10 years at the Blues in opposite goal-squares every week. Delicious.

Can we please stay on topic - Carlton v Gold Coast.

This is not a List Management thread.

Thanks.

As of today, there is 80% chance of less than 1mm. There’ll be more dew than anything. Both in the box and on the ground 😂

I don't know why Kemp is not being played at centre half back in the reserves as an option should we need him as he would have been very handy on Sunday particularly with his ability to run out of defence and create
Interestingly Kemp has been switched from being developed as part of the defensive structure to developing as a forward - which possibly reflected the coaching team's view on where he was most likely to be used going forward - before McGovern/McDonald copped injuries? He has the height to play CHB for sure - but again - we have never seen him take on such a role...I like the notion but he hasn't been training or playing there for a while
Opportunity beckons for Parks, provided he's training as the attacking 3rd tall - his physicality will already have ticked boxes for Voss & Hamill
Parks is a roughie but I liked what I saw of him in the game against Hawthorn on the weekend - does he have the footy smarts to play an aggressive intercepting role- knowing when to leave his man....and being effective? I don't know..

We must take this crew very seriously. They torched us in the midfield last year and those guns are still there plus Rowell. They pushed Dees very very hard up there a few weeks ago, must bring absolute A game.

Strangely though, we play better against them when we play them away so I hope the trend continues.

Why would you think we wouldn’t?We are in NO position to take anyone lightly.

Still can't get my head around, people wanting to make multiple changes this week

The 6 goal swing was more about a breakdown of structure and setup, not about 2, 3, 4 players being poor

Hawks will do well this year if their list stays healthy

We’ve got Saad, Martin, Omac(?) to come in as senior players, and Dow + Motlop with strong VFL form knocking on the door.

We’ve also got Pitto potentially injured, Charlie looking proppy at the end of the game, Weitering carrying an ankle issue.

Finally, in the conditions at Metricon, do we want 2 ruck men or the extra runner considering our forward line is already pretty tall.

I agree we shouldn’t be putting a chainsaw through a team that’s 3-0, but there’s definitely questions there.

There will be questions with all sides, not just us, but unless it is due to injuries, I doubt the MC will make wholesale changes, nor should they.

It's about making some tweaks, adding layers, to expand our game, but more importantly, continiuty of a group

Yes, Saad for someone like Boyd makes sense, beyond that, it becomes too reactive

Will be an interesting game, 3-0 so the forms there, hopefully the boys pull up well enough. Want a big game from the small forwards, been a bit quiet last two games on the scoreboard. JSOS looks like he's got even more consistency to his game now which is a massive boost to the forward line. Blues by 21pts :^)

DeBoer did a number on Touk Miller.

Touk, say hello George!

Fiorini had 25 and he was their biggest disposal winner. He's an icing on the cake type, not a match turner.

Rowell only had it 18 times (he'd dreaming too much about wearing the navy blue).

GWS led by 30 before the end of Q1, and by 50 at the 12 minute mark of the last quarter.

They then went quiet and GC (Chol in particular with 3) kicked the last 4 goals to make it a 'respectable' 26 point margin.

It was a flogging.

GC preview whilst relatively small is at least filled with fair dinkum discussion and very little crapping on us. A few have rightly pointed out our late fades and see that as a possible opportunity to ambush us. Fair enough too.

The question was do you think it's possible that a reason that Williams and Newman are being rated differently it that Williams' possessions are much more likely to result in scores than Newman?

That could be the case, I consider them different styled defenders. Williams a little like Saad at times is given licence to attack, while I feel like Newman is playing a deeper defender. (Williams did play a lot deeper against Richmond and you could see how it affected his output.)

I still want to make it clear, I don't want Williams dropped (currently) but I also think the board at times needs to relax a little on Newmans game.

We need two players to contest the centre bounce. We do not need two designated ruckmen.

Witts is their #1 and is very good. We have one of Pittonet (hopefully) or TDK to go up against him.

Chol averages 9 hitouts per game and spends most of his time forward.

Casboult averages the same number of hitouts as Lachie Fogarty.

Might be wet day too...

You only want to play 6 backs? Or Martin as a back?
And why drop Plowman?
I just don’t have him in our best back six/seven anymore, McGovern is miles ahead of him but out injured, honestly I’d prefer Kemp playing the defensive 3rd tall role instead of Plow, i think he adds a lot more but has had an interrupted preseason and not quite sure if we see him ready for seniors yet, i hope he is…
Martin as a forward…

Aside from your appraisal of Plowman, and where he fits in our back 7, you were dropping a back, and not replacing him.

Saad's kicking length after his carry is something we missed against the Hawks. Once the Hawks pushed players back after halftime to fill our HF space, the corridors closed and the running lanes for our forwards were limited.

get the ball to Saad and dare I say it LOB at all costs. LOB kick on the run to the top of the square against the Hawks was absolute quality...
Yeah, do need to use O'Brien more.

I hope Paddy Dow gets his chance soon.

Maybe put LOB in magoos (setters just in front at the minute) and put Cerra to a wing rotating with Walsh on ball. Dow comes in and plays in the guts, ressie form can't be ignored.

Last year of his contract, hope we re-sign him but if he doesn't get an opportunity can't see why he will stay.

We moved the ball too slowly after Q1.

Almost like we were trying to protect the lead....which didn't work out so well.

Disagree, when we finally decided to slow it down half way through the last quarter the game went back on our terms again.
I personally felt they continued the run and gun for far too long which emptied the tank too quickly and we were unable to defend cohesively.

Intercept marking was a key trait in his drafting from Glenelg, however if that can transition into AFL would need to be assessed vs the stopper role last season.

Saints have had success in getting their SANFL players to perform very well in the same type of roles with Wilkie & Highmore.

After watching both Doggies and Hawthorn games - more tempo football was required depriving opposition of possession instead of allowing the run and gun strategy to be used against the side. This required an ability to vary tempo not only in the last few minutes of a game but during a game as well. The second missing factor was the intercept role now with McGovern out- who does that? The intercept role is an important element of stopping the over the top and out direct entry strategy.

Vossy has to think this one through and maybe Parks is an option - especially if both TDK and Pittonet aren't 100%. I'm thinking McDonald is out. If McDonald is in - then maybe Young could play the third tall intercepting role.

Which bring me back to what was a 'controversial' statement I made last week - as soon as Honey/Cuningham and Marchbank are fit to play they will be in as starting players faster than you can say " we need leg speed and goal kicking HFF, and an intercepting defender "
