Taranto is a non proven midfielder so in the end he might become another HFF which we have plenty of, Amon will cost os nothing except $ and he is an upgrade on our current list if we contend for the flag in next 3 years Amon fits the bill.

Who would of recruited Ed Langdon from Freo when he left probably 1 or 2 clubs at best has 1 good year they win a flag.

Amon is a no brainer as long as his wage isn’t too excessive. He would give us a bit of extra outside run and be hopefully what we wanted from Hill.

How is Taranto unproven as a midfielder? He's played in the middle for the vast majority of his career.

Amon would likely cost more than 600k a year for a small upgrade on what we already have while also not addressing our biggest issue which is a mid who can win the ball. We shouldn't be overpaying someone just because they are available. Surely we have moved past that desperation stage.

Amon would be an upgrade. We need mids too but only really high end ones. We have plenty of depth but need some sizzle on the steak.

Maybe if his contract was around 500-550k. But all the reports of him being close to 700-750k a year, no thanks. Would hope we had learnt from the Hill contract to not hand one of those out again.

Yes, because saying we should target younger players to fill the age gap in our midfield means I am calling for mediocrity.
Were a finals side now so you kind of are saying "nah just the youth and lets hope and pray they wind up being good".

We have a known quantity right now that is close to flag material in a relatively weak comp. Its one in the hand two in the bush stuff.

Considering I have been saying I'd rather give up draft picks for a 22-25 year old, we would probably already have a pretty good idea if they could play or not.

So just to summarise.

You dont want any players who will absolutely improve us now and who will cost us absolutely nothing in future development as free agents when were argurably challenging for a flag now and for the next 2ish years in lieu of giving up draft picks to hopefully have players for 3-5 years time to compliment guys we currently have who might end up being total busts?

Cool... cool.

Big call to say a Taranto/Dunkley/Hooper type would take 3-5 to establish themselves at a different club given the quality of player they have been.

Im talking about the guys we already have, anyway we clearly have very different philosophies on list management and id wager were both very glad the other isnt in charge of it.

Taranto looks the only one really in the sights at the moment. You probably have to give up 2 x FRDPs to get him with a second rounder coming back. He’s worth chasing but he’s potentially Dylan Shiel too. Everything is a gamble. It will cost money and picks. Brayshaw looks a better bet.

Agree go all out for players and strike while we can, look at Geelong they do it all the time and play consistent finals.

Brayshaw is a gun but it's been a while since he has played as an inside mid. In that scenario, I'd rather take the gamble that Taranto continues his trajectory of being a gun mid at the cost of draft picks.

Go all out for the player who best has what we are desperate for over getting the FA who doesn't completely address our needs.

I have heard personal stories from a woman who had a run in with a couple of our current players. Guys that you’d consider clean skins and one recently delisted player. Probably coked, definitely drunk definitely much worse than JDG in Bali.

Footy players are often poorly behaved. It’s a lifestyle where they meet women who are throwing themselves at them, guys offer drugs and drinks or want to fight them. De Goey is a FA as someone said. He does dumb things he’s off the list and we have money for another FA next year. It’s like a gamble where he could look like an A hole for a couple of weeks or we could also just fade away into obscurity waiting.
It's not the behaviour I'm questioning, it's the decision to go to Bali, especially after what happened in the USA.

It suggests he lacks professionalism and I'd be nervous paying big money to such a player.

Difference of opinion on strategy aside do we actually need a ball winning mid?

We have Crouch, Steele, Ross, Gresh and Clark, Windy, Owens coming through.

Is it really that pressing a need?

What do you consider big money? I dont think anyone is suggesting throwing cash at him (if our offer is more than 750-800 id be suprised, personally i wouldnt go over 700 and if he doesnt wanna take it then so be it)

After seeing how badly we have lost the midfield battle with Steele out, yes.
Steele got hurt in the Geelong game (which we won).

We then beat Adelaide who for their many issues actually have a pretty decent midfield.

Flogged North in a game that proved nothing either way

Lost to Brisbane in a pretty tight game where we ran out of legs

And lost to Essendon (who also dont have a terrible midfield) in a game where we flat out didnt show up (and still managed to halve the clearance count).

We were shit on Friday across the park but i dont think it was just midfield, in fact our pressure coming off our own forward line was the much much bigger issue on Friday than our midfield.

I'm going on a mission this weekend to find young people partying ay night clubs and I'm going to take video of acts that aren't breaking any laws and in particular film people who should maintain a higher standard (whatever that means but I'll make something up), I'll then call myself Gerard Whatley and I'll go on the radio in the morining and start a lynching based on a self righteous moralistic crusade that is commercially viable, I'll then be whipping the audience up and encouraging them to call up on the radio and lay into my target species, ALL DAY, then I'll supercharge the lynching on the TV later that day and hopefully by the time I've finished my days work I'll leave the halls of my office which are lined with photos of Long legged blondes who my employer makes considerable money from for their sexy appearance. I'll then go home sleep easily after absolutely slamming another human being as this countries number one Authorised and sanctioned Bully.

Whats the risk?
He’s a free agent and if he stuffs up again - we sack him.
  • salary cap space
  • not being able to afford the next recruit that comes along that may suit our needs more
  • may mean we lose existing players to fit him in
  • bad press
  • may end up having a negative affect on thr clubs environment

You can argue that the risk is worth the reward if you like, but to suggest there is zero risk is wrong unfortunately. There's always a risk when recruiting a player.

Our inability to hold the ball in the forward half goes against the trend of the last 15 years of footy. To me we rely on clean conversation more than any other side. If King and Snags don’t have good games we are extremely impotent and don’t have enough pressure through the midfield to make it less of an issue. To me we really want fast high pressure scoring small forwards to replace Butler and Long. Richmond may let a couple more go while trying to refresh and bringing through Juddy Clark, Rioli and Ralphsmith.

🤨

2022 Avg:
26.9 disposals
4.8 tackles
4.2 clearances

2021 Avg:
26.5 disposals
5.3 tackles
4.3 clearances

2020 Avg:
19.3 disposals
4.1 tackles
4.0 clearances

2019 Avg:
27.7 disposals
6.3 tackles
5.3 clearances

And only 24yrs old, and at 188cm 89kg adds some serious grunt.

Numbers stack up very evenly with our own Man of Steele, albeit with lesser DE% (71.9 to 66.5).
