I was also told from some one I know who is good mates with Jake Carslie, he said Jake was pretty open about Ratts and the playing group not liking him a part from Ryder. Which doesn’t surprise me.

Ratten did not get a long with Parker either. So Ratts clearly has another side and is not this soft person every one says he is.
He has many off side with his treatment of Hill

Ironically Collingwoods 22 looks pretty ******* average but they finished 4th. Line our best against their best on paper and id back ours every day of the week.

Unfortunately they play fast, attractive, attacking footy and we dont. Hence they beat us head to head and on the ladder.

Collingwoods midfield is outclassed by every other team in the 8 (and some outside of the 8) but they are just so efficient going forward, and steadfast in defence that they keep themselves in the game.
For example in round 21 v Melbourne, the inside 50's were 60 to 30 at 3/4 time. 60 I50's for a full game usually wins the match for most teams. But they hung on and when the game turned in the last quarter they were still close enough to come over the top. They did the same thing a fortnight later against the blues.
We are the quite literally the opposite. Usually breaking even or winning the midfield battle, but being completely unable score from it

Ryder was mates with Jakey from the essendon days wasn't he?

Coops should be a priority. He's played 15 career games and looks like you'd be insane not to invest as much time as you can into him, everything points to a very very good player. Having a guy like Gunston would be tempting but not at he expense of having another 22 games pumped into Sharman. Sides like the Dogs don't wait, they get their kids in and pump games into them.
exactly. Curnow is 3 years older and was drafted at 18 not 21. Give sharman a couple years to properly get comfortable in that role and he could be that second fiddle for us. Would love to have King and Sharman 1 and 2 in the coleman next year or the year after

If we want to make strides I don't think we can be too worried about hurting people's feelings.

I think Luke's behaviour when we didn't offer him a contract showed exactly why we got rid of him.

If a bloke like Bytel is really going around saying he doesn't like the coaches then I'd say the same, although that may very well be crap.
Bytel has told the club he would like to test the market for more opportunities and the club says it respects that position. Think it is much different to the Dunstan situation who thought he knew better than the coaches. Only one winner in that fight at a footy club.

Ratts isn't soft he can be quite nasty. Even Steele said it earlier in the year he's quite scary when he wants to be.

Personally, my issue with Ratts is not that he's soft because he isn't. My issue is the way we played in the back half of the year was reflective of a poorly coached team.

I won't write him off yet but in my mind, he's on notice.

So it was well coached in the first half of the year when we were 8-3 beating Richmond, Freo and Geelong?

Weird how he can coach and has a gameplan for parts of the year, and suddenly doesn't. Can this be explained to someone like me who obviously doesn't know as much about gameplans as others?

I read with disappointment that people have jumped on Zak Jones and asked for him to be traded. Yeah he had a poor year but he had no preseason (due to the mystery illness) and never really got going. Perhaps people know more about his absence?

IMO in 2021 he was our most dynamic midfielder and gave us a real point of difference from the other similarly paced mids. Hopefully he can refind that form and remind his critics what he really offers. Without him in form and Gresham our midfield was exposed.

Again I think Jones was another victim of Ratten's 2022 coaching. Why he wasnt eased back into the side across HBF, defies sense. So IMO that is the absolute wrong reason to trade a player out of the club, when he offers more.
He had a pre season had a break just before the season started.

its not necessarily about being a soft nice coach or a scary hard coach. It's just about being a good coach. A smart one who knows how to make the changes and instruct the team to make them win. Whether you get the message across being nice or grumpy I don't care as long as the message/gameplan you're giving the team is actually of value.

Look I gave Ratts plenty of praise when we did well and I want him to be our long-term coach in my ideal world.

Some of the posters on this board are over the top in their criticism of him given the lack of knowledge they have regarding exactly what goes on behind closed doors.

I'm not looking at him and thinking he's the problem sack him now but I am questioning did he get it right in the last half of the year it didn't look like it to me.

Totally agree.

My post was probably directed to some of the boneheads who think our coach is too soft. But you are right they just need to be a good coach.

I reckon we were winning early due to our high pressure game being successful at that time. High pressure causes opposition turnovers which then leads to easy goals against a non-setup defence. Once teams were able to absorb the pressure and we had to to score goals the traditional way against setup defences, we struggled.
Im not sure why it changed so much in the 2nd half of the year. Maybe because we were playing better teams that could absorb pressure better, or by that stage of the year teams were more drilled? But watching it, It just felt like we had no plan B

That said, our ball movement looked a lot better in our last 6 quarters. So maybe theres hope for next year

and on the topic of "losing the players" it usually isn't because a coach either yells too much or not enough. It's usually just if the players can sense that they've got no clue.

A dud coach screaming stupid instructions at you gets tuned out really quickly and a soft spoken idiot comes across as just that.

The opposite for a shouty genius or a soft spoken guru

Right so a poster that joined a week ago drops a couple of bombs negative comments on Ratts attitude & were to believe it I say bull$hit all of a sudden he appears & shortly will disappear FM.

You don’t have to believe what I am saying. I don’t think my comments about Ratts were even that negative. I hope we succeed with Ratts and it was good to hear that he has that side.

I could of stayed around the other day arguing, but it was pointless. I put my hand up and accepted my medicine.

Not sure how I am looking for click bait when I have no link to a article and you don’t have to click on my comment to view it?

Yep he sure showed Ratts.
How many games he managed with the Dee's?

He went there to get away not to play footy. He was happy to retire rather than spend another day under Ratts. That's pretty bad IMO. If he's happy getting a game at Casey good luck to him.

I reckon the signs were there early too but wins cover all sins. We got a few at the right time with injury and small patches within games pinched us wins. The Cats game was one great burst in poor game but still a great effort regardless. Freo in Perth was good but really don't have an obvious game plan or brand.

We didn't even offer him a contract.
