Agree with the first paragraph, and our best 22 will be good.

Still think our cattle was outclassed on Sunday.
We worked hard and won the ball, defended well. They just had classier ball movement.
We were missing a few best 22 but need to build depth with good ball users.

Sydney bat super deep with good players on every line. They are going to be a force and we pushed them. We are never going to be as stacked but we can only do what we can do. Often the best sides don't win the GF. Just get to the challenge zone and let the rest take care of its self.

No matter what we probably have to stay as a hard working, 22 guys putting in everything they have side, but plenty of those have done well.

Someone suggested Long didn't rate Ratts game plan and players last year were confused by it. The person who I think needs the biggest kick in the arse is Ratts.

Hopefully Noble interviews the players away from the coach and the coach isn't off limits this time. Lethlean did a review around everything but coaching to save the club embarrassment last time so had to hack the list only to sack the coach anyway.

Dunstan walked away from the club with really sour taste in his mouth. All the positive folks on here will jump up and down in their seats saying good riddance, but when you have caused that kind of friction, it gets around players and managers.

For a guy who is a relationship coach not a strategic one, he has got a few players off side.
Yep. And if they do it confidentially then even better.

We'll have Hayes. He's a big body who'll take attention away from King whilst Sharman also develops.
Definite no to Gunston from me.
We need to be developing our own players now unless its someone too good to refuse in an age demographic we need,

Coops should be a priority. He's played 15 career games and looks like you'd be insane not to invest as much time as you can into him, everything points to a very very good player. Having a guy like Gunston would be tempting but not at he expense of having another 22 games pumped into Sharman. Sides like the Dogs don't wait, they get their kids in and pump games into them.

Yep he sure showed Ratts.
How many games he managed with the Dee's?

Maybe getting someone to play 2nd fiddle to every each week is a good idea.
We've all said that. And I'm saying Hayes and/or Sharman are exactly that without bringing in a 31 yr old semi-retiree looking for a pension.
I don't think Gunston has been so great when I've watched him this year.

I didn’t say don’t go to the draft, you did say you only get talent from the draft.

You know you can get FAs without giving up draft picks right?

Is that a fact? Didn't know that. Thought there must have been a reason why I have been advocating to get DeGoey (and even Amon) as a FA while keeping our dp's to get high end quality players.

Thanks for modsplaining how we football in AFL.

Replay that trade period without Hill and I think we'd be pretty golden. It's still very fixable but they need another coach if we're being serious. I hope they hire a replacement for him this year. Go get Yze, McQualter, and Luke Hodge in some capacity. Ditch Lade and Roughey, then Ratts at the bye.

McQualter would be a great get. Yze I think will want to stay at Melbourne until he gets a senior job.

We'd seen his ceiling - I didn't have a problem with that decision.
Think there could be a lot to play out still with Bytel and that's why I'm really loath to see him leave, especially if its due to a personality clash.

Gutted if we lose Nas, kid will be a star. Mitch, Windy, Hayes & NWM all bright spots in a disappointing season.

Both Taranto and JDG would be nice but unlikely. Prefer Taranto.

Def need a tall mature defender for the monsters.

Taranto would be nice but not for 2x FRDPs.

Sharman is a very long way off being a competent AFL forward, let alone being comparable to what Gunston could bring.

Ok so who does he replace in our midfield? He hasn't had the greatest of years. In fact you could argue that his best was left for the last 4 weeks of the VFL season.

Nobody wanted Dunstan. He had a chance to go to the Suns but the Suns coach was put off by the way Dunstan bad mouthed his previous coach and his previous football club.

Think it was more Dunstan and his attitude more than the Saints coach or the club. Sounds like a disruptive influence around the place, and too dumb to keep his mouth shut when he was out of a job.

Add Webster and Lienert to that group and your clearing space for some opportunity for Highmore, Coffield, Connoly etc. Not to mention the cap space as well. My estimate would be around 3.5 million with the players numbered and those other two right there. I get if you think you can contend to load up on cheap reliable journeymen/ second chances to fill in the gaps due to injury but we ain't that anymore. We should be clearing the list of these guys and giving the list a freshen up via the draft and some savvy identification of some young talent starved of opportunity at clubs with A graders in their positions. I'd rather hang on to and give game time to Bytel, Burnes, Sharman, Connoly etc and see if thay develop in the Sinclair manner than give games to these C grade, happy to still be on a list somewhere players. If the spin is these guys are good clubmen and model citizens then get a Like Hodge type instead that doesn't have the mental hang ups and energy of a just hanging in there, never quite good enough list clogger and get your culture right with your assistants. All that said I do like Campbell on the list and playing with the kids. He has cracked in all year at reserve level and provides a level of protection/physicallity that the list really lacks.
What about a jack reiwoldt to play the Hodge onfield leader role for a year, but in the fwd line where we are struggling. Could be a great mentor and onfield forward coach and cheap.
Plus a bit of Tiger IP rather than the dated Hawthorn stuff.

If we want to make strides I don't think we can be too worried about hurting people's feelings.

I think Luke's behaviour when we didn't offer him a contract showed exactly why we got rid of him.

If a bloke like Bytel is really going around saying he doesn't like the coaches then I'd say the same, although that may very well be crap.

I thought the "intent" of our ball movement was much better than it has been in the past, but we just couldn't execute it skill wise. Too many poor kicks and handballs. I always thought some players are just inherently good kicks and others are not, so I'm worried it is something that we can improve much on.

It was interesting to hear Craig McCrae talk about setting up the ground for their ball movement.

It's not always just about executing the perfect kick, sometimes the way you set up the field is what allows that corridor kick to be an easier option, etc.

I'm not sure we set it up in a way that makes it easy for us to execute our skills.

I'm sure we are not the most skillful side but I bet were better than we look.

You quoted me with a pithy response... champo
Dont think there was anything pithy about it.

Joffa (from memory) said you only get quality from the draft

I replied saying thats wrong

You replied saying we have heaps of imports

If you wanna stand with the "only quality comes from the draft" line then id happily argue that, if your point was "we have heaps of imports" then i agree with you.

I cant quote you saying quality only comes from the draft cause you didnt say it but you did respond to me making a point about it... buddy.

I was also told from some one I know who is good mates with Jake Carslie, he said Jake was pretty open about Ratts and the playing group not liking him a part from Ryder. Which doesn’t surprise me.

Ratten did not get a long with Parker either. So Ratts clearly has another side and is not this soft person every one says he is.

Sharman was a wasted year just like Battle was last year , Sharman when he kicked 10 goals took 19 marks in his 4 games at the end of 2021 many past greats Brereton Carey Johnston were saying what a natural footballer and what a great prospect he was. Of course he should be in our forward line

King Membrey Sharman
Billing’s Higgins Butler

I read with disappointment that people have jumped on Zak Jones and asked for him to be traded. Yeah he had a poor year but he had no preseason (due to the mystery illness) and never really got going. Perhaps people know more about his absence?

IMO in 2021 he was our most dynamic midfielder and gave us a real point of difference from the other similarly paced mids. Hopefully he can refind that form and remind his critics what he really offers. Without him in form and Gresham our midfield was exposed.

Again I think Jones was another victim of Ratten's 2022 coaching. Why he wasnt eased back into the side across HBF, defies sense. So IMO that is the absolute wrong reason to trade a player out of the club, when he offers more.
