Ive got to admit I'm a little baffled about some of the responses here. We get one of the toughest draws in the system. we finish 9th. Walsh is right, we're not respected, but its not because we are finishing last, its because we don't seem to be progressing as a football team past mid tear.

The club has identified an age problem, so they go back to the draft, we have a great draft year last year it seems, now we need top end talent, we have a lot of soldiers, good ones too, be we need an elite player or two, to stand next to King.

I think the club is beginning to realise how hard it is to get these guys from other clubs. Now they are going to the draft in the hope of getting elite talent. Its risky but its cheaper if it works. I think we tried the Trade thing and it took us to mid table. Now we need to trade to get higher picks, not more soldiers.

For mine the only elite players being traded this trade period, are Taranto and Dunkley. The Bowes deal is great, but it could lead to nothing for the Cats. The only side getting better are Richmond and the Lions in my eyes, Collingwood is getting more soldiers, Geelong gets some good young talent. We need a top 5 draft pick.
Nailed it. We need a top 5 pick and another one in the top 15...another couple in the mid twenties to mid thirties. We have the last 3. Just need the first one.

They would want him to be better than freo thought he was for them to win a flag next year.

I reckon the Blues look ready to go to another level IMO. Acres makes sense because they need a bit of outside run to add to a great inside set up.

What we gave up for him was dumb, but he was at least an attempt to fill a need.

Trades like that take a few years to have its full effect on the team's performance.

That lost pick (which ended up a mid 20) if used wisely would be in their sweet spot right now. Edit: (Future 3rd and Future 4th round pick)

It was like we got to the end of that trade period and nothing had happened (similar to this one), so we just wanted to do something. I doubt Logan Austin was even filling any need at the time.

Austin is 27 years old now, and 195cm tall. Was always a nice kick and got plenty of the ball for a KPD.

We traded a future third for him and a future fourth. The best player taken in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft was Jacob Koschitzke. I'd say we didn't persist with him long enough, but that's my view.

Same deal with the Kent trade - it's angels on a pinhead stuff trying to work out if we lost the deal or won the deal.

For me, the two that standout over our history is trading for Ryan Gamble (because it cost Tom Lynch opportunity) and letting Goddard go.

People are considering let's get Bowes 7 and 2.8m over 4 years. For a VFL player essentially but injury hampered upside.

Whitfield 5m over 5 years for a proven afl A grader. Add pick 3 and maybe swap 9 with 11 or ffrdp for GWS 3 and 11. I'd do that.

Hill comes off big money 3 9 and 11 develop next 2 years we can pay them increased salary with Hill money.

Just hope Whitfield is not an injury bust...oh wait...haven't we just been through that.

Moving on HC for a pick also reduces our SC straight away to make the above deal more palatable.

HC and 9 for North pick 2 they get from JHF deal. Values HC at pick 15.

Pick 2 3 and 11 sounds like a pretty fair reset with what we have already from last year.

He's not a VFL player at all but. Where has this narrative come from? There was even a few in here discussing his availability before pick 7 was involved.
Has had a few injuries but is a talented player and still has a fair chunk of potential if he can get his body right
Ever since we have found out about his contract the narrative has turned into him not being able to play...its weird.

Sorry my mistake I thought it was one pick we gave up for Austin, but it was two picks. Most people were inquiring about why we gave up the picks for an unheard of Port backman.

Yes, Ryan Gamble was a very strange one by Rossy.

If he was as good as we thought he was they would have kept him. The rumour is he is only getting 400k. Freo got rid of him by offering a one year deal on bugger all money. You don’t rid of good players for nothing unless there is a problem.

If you divide the salary cap through by all the players you get 350 000K per player.
Obviously if you are going to have some stars on big bucks, your average players need to be on less.

I'd suggest that Acres is an average player.

why? last year, ahe was the best thing 'since sliced bread'. As said above, the club has said they will not be trading much.

can't have it both ways.
Last year was good but we got lucky with Windy and Owens
Let’s see if NWM is still with us this time next year
Let’s hope he does better then Alison this year

Interestingly enough. The “Great sides” don’t have stars on significant pay structures.

They have a tier system and everyone buys in.

Aware that you need to be successful to implement this. But worth noting in this discussion

We gave up a future 3rd rounder for Austin and a 4th rounder back. Austin may have been a bust but we paid bugger all for him.

Whilst I’m feeling flat about our future prospects today.

Those 3 + Coffield/King/Higgins/Battle and Marshall

Could transform the entire leagues opinion on us in a season.

Clark for me at this point should be moved if a first round pick is offered. Just don’t believe he has the drive unfortunately

You always seem to be able to find positives in about 17 AFL clubs.

However gringo remember….

Goddard was offered 3 years on a smaller wage as his output was declining. He was ok with the money but wanted 4 years. Ess gave him 4. His behaviour contrasts badly with how the current Geelong crop go about it. Says it all really.

I agree with all that

But we say similar every year

Players you mentioned you are spot on about I don’t believe we have the game plan or coach to get the best out of them and the team
